Liverpool submit offer to sign 16 y/o Man City target likened to Rogers

Still seeking further additions, Liverpool have now reportedly submitted an opening offer to sign a 16-year-old gem as well as one other young star who’s been compared to Morgan Rogers.

Liverpool's 2026 transfer targets

Whilst their bank balance may still be recovering from their £400m spending spree in the summer, Liverpool are already thinking about potential 2026 targets for Arne Slot and his side. Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes, even after breaking Liverpool’s transfer record twice, are far from done with their project.

Following a recent dip in form – losing three consecutive games in all competitions – questions have been asked about Slot’s reign for the first time and questions that could be answered by using the transfer market.

Agent reveals "explosive" star's transfer preference between Liverpool and Chelsea

He’s had his say…

Oct 14, 2025

It’s clear, for example, that the Reds need a centre-back. Unless anything changes between now and the summer, Liverpool will lose Ibrahima Konate on a free deal following the end of his contract. That will leave them with just three senior centre-backs – Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and young Giovanni Leoni.

Given that Van Dijk is on course to leave in 2027, Gomez is injury-prone and Leoni will be coming off the back of his own lengthy spell on the sidelines, those at Anfield are likely to turn towards the market for reinforcement in that area.

On that front, Marc Guehi is still a name that Liverpool will reportedly look to sign after coming within hours of securing his arrival in the summer. This time around, however, they’ll need backup options with the Crystal Palace defender also attracting interest from the likes of Real Madrid as his contract ticks down.

Before then, Edwards and Hughes have reportedly set their sights on the future of Slot’s side with reports suggesting that Liverpool have submitted an offer to sign an impressive young duo.

Liverpool submit offer to sign Palmer twins

As reported by The Boot Room’s Graeme Bailey, Liverpool have now submitted an offer to sign Anton and Bailey Palmer. The 16-year-old twins have recently announced their decision to leave Middlsborough and have not been short of options ever since.

Alongside Liverpool, they’ve reportedly received offers from Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. To say that they’ve got a big decision to make would be a major understatement.

Both are incredibly impressive young players. Anton, a midfield gem, pushed through at Boro to make two appearances in the Premier League 2, whilst Bailey – also a midfielder – has received comparisons to Aston Villa’s Rogers.

After winning the race to sign Salford’s Will Wright in the summer, Liverpool should push all the way to beat Man City and others to sign the Palmer twins.

£45m star who plays a “bit like Henry” could end Gyokeres’ Arsenal career

Arsenal got back on track in the best way possible on Wednesday night: dismantling Club Brugge 3-0.

Sure, there were moments in which the Belgian side looked dangerous, but in the end, it was a commanding performance from Mikel Arteta’s side, and one that saw them maintain their 100% record in the Champions League.

Moreover, there were some brilliant performances from players who needed to step up, such as Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli.

However, one starter who didn’t and is now in real danger of slipping further down the pecking order at Arsenal is Viktor Gyokeres.

Gyokeres' season so far

There was quite a bit of excitement among the fan base when Arsenal finally signed Gyokeres in the summer, in part because of the saga surrounding the move, but mostly because of his unreal record in Portugal.

After all, in just two seasons, the Swedish “powerhouse,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, racked up a tally of 97 goals and 28 assists in 102 appearances, totalling 8417 minutes.

That comes out to a simply staggering average of 1.22 goal involvements every game, or one every 67.33 minutes, so to say that there was a level of expectation coming into this season would be fair.

Unfortunately, so far anyway, the Stockholm-born international has not really lived up to it.

Now, he’s certainly not been terrible, unlike some other Swedish strikers who moved this year, but his return of six goals in 18 appearances is some way off the numbers fans were hoping he’d put up.

Moreover, while some of the blame has to fall on his teammates for not creating enough clear-cut chances, the 27-year-old still has to get into dangerous positions more often and hold up the ball better.

The game on Wednesday night was one of his worst performances in this regard, as he offered practically nothing on or off the ball, taking just 12 touches and completing only five passes.

With all that said, there is still time for the previously prolific striker to come good. Still, he’s going to have to start improving quickly, as there is now another player in the squad who could leapfrog him in the pecking order, someone who has been compared to Thierry Henry in the past.

Arsenal star is bad news for Gyokeres' Emirates career

The unfortunate situation for Gyokeres is that, injuries permitting, he has some serious rivals for that starting striker spot.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

There is, of course, Kai Havertz, who chalked up 15 goals before his season was ended by injury last year and then the man who has been scoring in for fun in 2025, Mikel Merino.

However, Wednesday night heralded the return of a third rival, someone plenty of fans had essentially written off in the summer: £45m man Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian made his return to first-team action 322 days after suffering an ACL injury, and while he didn’t score against Club Brugge, he looked lively.

In fact, in his 30-odd minutes of action, the former Manchester City ace looked far more threatening than Gyokeres did, taking two shots on target and another that hit the woodwork.

Moreover, he took eight more touches than the Swede, played a key pass, completed 14 passes and helped to link up the play in a way that made the team look far more fluid.

Now, he did play against a tired defence, and it’s probably too early to say he should be in from the start in the next game, but the 28-year-old is now a serious contender for that role, as when he’s fit, he’s a threat.

For example, in his 97 appearances for the North Londoners, he has scored 26 goals and provided 20 assists, which comes out to a pretty impressive average of a goal involvement every 2.10 games.

Furthermore, even though he doesn’t have the physicality of the former Sporting star, he is far more graceful on the ball and, in the words of Ray Parlour, “drifts out to the left quite often, a little like Thierry Henry used to.”

Ultimately, there is still a lot of the season to go, but based on what fans have seen so far, there is a real possibility that, so long as he stays fit, Jesus could surpass Gyokeres in the pecking order and even end his Arsenal career.

Odegaard upgrade: Arsenal have made a move to sign £88m "generational talent"

The sensational international would be an excellent signing for Arsenal, but could be bad news for Martine Odegaard.

Renshaw makes swift Sheffield Shield return for final round of Ashes selection race

Cameron Green will feature for WA after his minor side injury while Brendan Doggett returns for South Australia

Andrew McGlashan26-Oct-2025Matt Renshaw will make a short turnaround back into Sheffield Shield action for Queensland in a bid to push for Ashes selection in the round of games which will determine Australia’s squad for the first Test against England.Renshaw, who scored a maiden ODI half-century at the SCG on Saturday, flew back home the day after the game and was due to train with his state on Monday before facing a New South Wales side that will include Steven Smith as he ramps up his Ashes preparation and Sam Konstas, who has one game left to save his Test spot.Renshaw began his Shield season with a century against Tasmania before missing the second round due to his ODI call-up. While not a frontrunner, he could still force his way into the Test squad, particularly with the versatility he provides as a batter.Related

Australia's top order: What are the selectors' options?

Why Head hopes Ashes pitches continue to help the bowlers

Against NSW, he will likely open alongside Usman Khawaja, who plays his third Shield match of the season. Meanwhile, Michael Neser, who could well play a role in the Ashes, is being rested for this round leaving Queensland with a depleted attack due to injuries.”I’m ready for Tuesday… I think it’s the same cricket ball, it’s just a different colour,” Renshaw said, downplaying the Ashes chat. “My batting, if I’m showing good intent, whatever format that may be, it’s obviously the different shots that you need to play in red ball.”My feet are feeling really good against the quicks, spin is feeling good. So hopefully I can score some runs in the next Shield game and win a game for Queensland.”Currently, Renshaw’s Queensland team-mate Marnus Labuschagne, who will also face NSW, is favourite to open against England after a prolific start to the summer although much still depends on Cameron Green’s status as a bowler and the knock-on impact to Beau Webster’s role. There will be much interest in Cameron Green’s bowling loads over the next few weeks•Getty Images

Green is set to play for Western Australia against South Australia at the WACA having missed the India ODIs due to side soreness. Selectors were quick to downplay concerns over Green’s fitness but it remains to be seen how much he bowls against SA having sent down just four overs so far this season, 12 months after undergoing back surgery.Further interest in the Perth fixture will come with the presence of Brendan Doggett, who will play his first game of the season after a hamstring injury. He is firmly in contention as a fast-bowling reserve for the Ashes having been part of the World Test Championship squad earlier this year and originally been due to tour West Indies before injury.Another significant match takes place at Junction Oval in Melbourne where Jake Weatherald will be looking to back up his excellent 94 against WA, which kept his name in the frame for a maiden call-up. He won’t have to battle Scott Boland, who is being rested for this round, but will still face a strong Victoria attack.Webster will also feature for Tasmania after overcoming the ankle injury which kept him out of the first two Shield matches. He has been assured of his place in the Test squad by chair of selectors George Bailey and the uncertainty over Green increases the likelihood of him retaining his spot. Being omitted would be harsh for a player who has started with four half-centuries in seven matches in a variety of tricky batting conditions.Among others who will be part of the Test squad, Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood remain with Australia’s T20I side to face India. Hazlewood, who suffered a cut finger late in the third ODI at the SCG, will drop out after the first two matches in Canberra and Melbourne to prepare for the Shield match against Victoria in Sydney ahead of the first Test. Brazil's Neymar defies medical advice and plays through the pain to score and assist in crucial Santos win as club fights relegation

Neymar went against advice from doctors to play through on for Santos as they secured a crucial win in their bid to beat the drop from Brazil's top flight. Santos hosted Brasileirao footers Sport Recife and secured what could prove to be a vital three points as they look to stave off the threat of relegation. And Neymar was key in a 3-0 victory that may have ended the forward's season.

Neymar influential as Santos down Sport Recife

Neymar fired Santos ahead midway through the first half and the hosts were two goals to the good 10 minutes later after a Lucas Kal own goal doubled Santos' advantage. And the three points were sewn up midway through the second half as Neymar turned provider for Joao Schmidt to confirm a 3-0 victory.

The win extended Santos' unbeaten run to four matches as they secured just their 10th league victory of the season. Santos now sit two points above the relegation zone ahead of their final two games of the campaign as they look to beat the drop.

Relegation rivals Vitoria host high-flying Mirassol, while Fortaleza host Atletico MG on Sunday evening as the battle to beat the drop goes to the wire. Neymar, though, has done all he can at the risk of aggravating a knee injury that could now rule him out for the final two games of the season.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportSantos had a 'plan' for their talisman

Neymar has endured an injury-hit campaign, meaning he has been restricted to just 15 league starts this season. The Brazilian missed the recent 1-1 draw with Internacional with a knee issue, though the plan had always been for Neymar to play some part against Sport Recife over the weekend.

Speaking after the 1-1 draw with Internacional, Santos manager Juan Pablo Vojvoda revealed what he had in mind for Neymar, stating: "The plan is for him to be in the match against Sport. I have to talk to him, I'm not in his physical presence and I will respect Neymar's decisions.

"But his commitment is to be there, he always wants to be there. Before the Mirassol game, he felt discomfort in his knee. He also felt it during the game. The following day he was experiencing significant discomfort in that knee. We know we have games every three days. With travel, we'll arrive in Santos tomorrow afternoon… He's a player we need for all three rounds and he'll help us. He's our leader on the field. He'll be there. He felt he wouldn't be able to meet the demands of today's game."

Neymar to miss the final two games

Neymar trained ahead of the game against Sport Recife even after it was recommended that he undergo an arthroscopy in order to repair a tear in the meniscus region of his left knee. The issue is said to be causing Neymar persistent pain, but he was willing to play through the pain in order to boost Santos' survival chances.

And while he defied medical advice to play a vital role in Santos' win over Sport Recife, earning a standing ovation has he exited the field, Neymar will miss the final two games of the Brasileirao season due to the meniscus injury.

Santos see out the campaign with a trip to relegated Juventude next week before the welcome of Cruzeiro in a potential relegation decider in the final round of Brasileirao fixtures. Rivals Vitora follow up their welcome of Mirassol with games against Red Bull Bragantino and Sao Paulo, while Fortaleza take on Corinthians and Botafogo following Sunday's game against Atletico MG.

Getty Images SportInjury will impact 2026 World Cup spot

Neymar's latest setback may impact his Brazil chances with head coach Carlo Ancelotti previously stating what is required for the 33-year-old to secure his Selecao spot in North America next summer.

"Neymar is on the list of players who can go to the World Cup. He has six months to make the final list," Ancelotti said earlier this month. "Neymar has recovered, but he needs to show performance. When the Brazilian league ends he'll have some vacation time, and then he must show his quality and physical condition again," the Italian stated elsewhere.

The former Barcelona and PSG forward's current Santos deal expires at the end of the year, and the club is in a dilemma over the player's future.

"Neymar’s project is the 2026 World Cup," Santos club President Marcelo Teixeira said recently. "If we find common ground, his continuity will be confirmed. As long as Santos and Neymar, who have a strong and positive understanding of trust, reach a common ground. I believe we will resolve this situation at the right time."

With Juan Soto On Board, Mets Must Build a Powerhouse

Juan Soto is trading the Bronx for Queens.

Late Sunday night, Soto broke the news—and the hearts of Yankees fans everywhere—that he had signed the largest contract in North American professional sports history with the New York Mets. Yes, those Mets.

Soto won't be in pinstripes. He won't be lacing balls off the Green Monster. He won't be joining a lineup that also features Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman. No, he's joining the Mets. And he'll immediately become the most talented player in franchise history.

Landing Soto was a monumental task for owner Steve Cohen and his franchise. They're paying the five-time Silver Slugger $765 million over the next 15 years. It's an audacious contract that announced to MLB that New York's other team means business. Now here comes the difficult part: building a championship roster.

APSTEIN: Juan Soto’s Self-Confidence Pays Off With Record MLB Contract

The Mets reached the National League Championship Series this year. It was an unexpected run that saw them oust the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies along the way. But in the NLCS they collided into a brick wall that was decked out in Dodger blue. Ohtani, Betts & Co. sent the Mets packing in six games and sent a clear message that the NL will run through L.A. for the foreseeable future.

The Mets must change that.

Soto is now locked up for a long time, as is NL MVP runner-up Francisco Lindor, while outfielder Brandon Nimmo is signed through the 2030 season. Third baseman and postseason hero Mark Vientos won't even hit arbitration eligibility until 2027, and Jeff McNeil is inked through at least 2026. Other key players like closer Edwin Diaz and starter Kodai Senga can opt out of their deals after next season, and outfielder Starling Marte is a free agent after the 2025 campaign.

Lindor and Vientos were New York's only hitters on the team to play in 100 or more games and post an OPS over .800. On the mound, the team's top three starting pitchers are all free agents. Luis Severino already signed with the Athletics, while Sean Manaea and José Quintana are exploring the market.

There are a lot of gaps on the roster and general manager David Stearns needs to get to work filling them.

HOT STOVE TAKES: Juan Soto’s Record-Breaking Deal Isn’t Just About the Money

Already this offseason New York has signed pitchers Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes, but first baseman Pete Alonso remains a free agent. It's possible the Soto deal means Alonso's time with the franchise is over. If so, the Mets need to find replacement bats.

The Mets didn't sign Soto to be content with making the postseason. It's a move designed to put the franchise in World Series contention every year. As currently constructed, they can't do that. Soto has already been to the World Series twice and won once. He has a championship pedigree and needs to be surrounded by players who can help him get there again.

Stearns needs to take advantage of Cohen's comically large checkbook and find the pieces to build a championship squad around his shiny new star.

The Mets landed the greatest player their franchise has ever seen. Now the hard part begins.

Ben Stokes on final-day bowling efforts: 'Nothing was stopping me'

Sledging, swearing, send-offs – Lord's needling promises explosive series ahead

“It’s not good news for Bash,” Ben Stokes said after the match. “Very disappointing for us as a team and for him, a big shame.”The courage that he showed to go out there and bat at the end for us and willing to sit there on the bench waiting for his moment to come on and bowl just proves how much it means to everyone who gets the opportunity to put the shirt on, that not even a couple of breaks is going to stop anyone getting out there.”Bashir defied the pain to bat in England’s second innings, facing nine balls in scoring two runs before he became the last wicket to fall, Washington Sundar’s fourth, as England set India a target of 193.After he had spent much of the fourth innings off the field, Stokes called on Bashir in the 55th over as England sought the final two wickets they needed for victory and a 2-1 series lead with Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah in the midst of a stubborn 35-run partnership off 132 balls. With his ring and little finger splinted together and heavily bandaged, Bashir bowled three overs in an elongated middle session in which Stokes removed Bumrah to make it nine down.In the field, Bashir held his left hand gingerly out of the way as he ran around from mid-off and dived to his right to cut off a boundary. But he returned to the attack immediately after the tea break and that’s when the moment Stokes described to as “written in the stars” happened. It was 2.5 overs into that second spell and it happened so fast, yet in slow-motion, the result elation, yet devastation. Bashir tossed one up above No. 11 Mohammed Siraj’s eyeline as he played back to some ferocious back-spin, the ball rolling down the bat face into the crease then dribbling onto leg stump, just one of the bails falling off gently, yet cruelly, to the ground.”What an amazing feeling for him to be able to take that wicket there and with his hand in the state that it’s in, amazing,” Stokes told his post-match press conference. “Very proud of the way that he went about the rest of the week after having to come off the field.”There would be a lot of people who might not necessarily have been brave enough to go out there and face Bumrah and then also put himself up for wanting to get out there and bowl and help his team.”Stokes and Bashir shared a long embrace in celebration, which was no doubt bittersweet given the bowler’s circumstances. England will name their squad for the fourth Test, starting at Old Trafford on July 23, in the coming days.Liam Dawson returned to international duty after more than two years last month•Getty Images

Dawson, Leach in contentionLiam Dawson made a successful return to international duty after more than two years in the first match of England’s T20I series against West Indies last month, returning career-best figures of 4 for 20, and is in contention as a replacement for Bashir, as is fellow left-arm spinner Jack Leach.”Every time I looked around at the bench and asked for a drink, I’d just see Bash’s little head peeking through there ready to go,” Stokes said. “We were told by the match officials that he could stay off the field when he wasn’t bowling, but if he was bowling he had to stay out there.”And look, we obviously threw a lot at their batting line-up today with seam so just breaking that flow of the game up with spin every now and again was something I was going to go to. We all thought it was a good option and it was great that Bash was able to get that last wicket with what he had to deal with this week.”Bashir finished with 1 for 59 from 14.1 overs in India’s first innings, where they equalled England’s total of 387, and his subsequent 1 for 6 from 5.5 overs took his tally for the series to 10 at an average of 54.10. That one wicket will give him plenty to smile about during the road ahead.

Worth way more than Hojlund: Man Utd have struck gold on "incredible" star

Manchester United have previously been a club associated with being the home to numerous top-level attackers who have helped aid their success in the Premier League.

However, the last few years have been a struggle for the Red Devils, with Ruben Amorim unable to create a frontline capable of achieving success in various competitions.

His side only registered 44 goals in England’s top-flight throughout 2024/25, with no player able to register double figures for goals, with Amad and Bruno Fernandes both only scoring eight times.

Such a record was the fifth worst in the division, with three of the sides registering fewer goals subsequently being relegated – highlighting the club’s lack of success in such an area.

One of the players who struggled at Old Trafford during the aforementioned campaign was offloaded during the recent window, with such a decision potentially being a mistake given his form as of late.

Rasmus Hojlund’s form away from United

Back in the summer of 2023, United forked out a fee in the region of £72m for striker Rasmus Hojlund from Italian side Atalanta, with real hope he could end their goalscoring worries.

The Dane did manage to meet expectations in his first year in England, scoring 16 times across all competitions, with five of his efforts coming in the Champions League.

However, he struggled to impress in 2024/25, only netting five Premier League goals, even going 21 games without a goal at one stage, which further highlights his lack of impact in the final third.

The Red Devils board decided to ship him back to Serie A, with the forward joining Napoli on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy should they finish in a Champions League spot.

Hojlund has already managed to impress in Naples, already scoring four times in his first six outings for the club – including a double in Europa against Sporting CP.

His form has also transferred to international level, as seen by his latest showing against Belarus, where the 22-year-old netted twice and also laid on an assist for former teammate Patrick Dorgu.

Despite his recent success on the pitch, he’s still valued lower than one current United player who’s managed to find some impressive form over the last couple of weeks.

The United player who’s worth more than Hojlund

In an attempt to bolster the club’s attacking department, the United hierarchy splashed over £200m on new attacking talent during the recent summer transfer window.

Matheus Cunha joined in a £62.5m deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers after he scored 15 goals in England’s top-flight during the 2024/25 campaign.

The Brazilian was also joined in attacking areas by Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, with the Cameroonian international also costing a pretty penny at £71m.

Like Cunha, he also managed to impress last time around, subsequently scoring 20 times and being one of just five players in the division to achieve such a feat.

The aforementioned duo were joined by centre forward Benjamin Sesko, leading to the board forking out £74m for his signature from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

At just 22, he’s already impressed in his professional career, as seen by his tally of 21 goals in all competitions last season – 13 of which came in Germany’s top-flight.

He has bags of time to develop into an elite-level forward, but he’s already shown glimpses of his quality during the early games of his career at Old Trafford.

Sesko, who’s been labelled “incredible” by one analyst, has scored in each of his last two outings for the Red Devils, currently sitting as the club’s joint top scorer in the Premier League for the 2025/26 campaign.

His underlying stats also demonstrate his impressive nature, winning 3.7 aerial duels per 90 – a tally which makes him the perfect focal point for Amorim’s side – something which they have lacked in recent times.

As a result of his immediate impact in Manchester, Sesko has seen his market value soar in recent months, with the Slovenian international now valued at £103.6m by CIES Football Observatory.

Such a value is higher than that of the departed Hojlund, with the Dane now only valued at £67.9m by the same site after his recent demise at Old Trafford.

The early signs for the new big-money addition are all positive, but it’s crucial he continues to build on his early success at avoiding suffering the same fate as the Dane.

As for the latter, it’s great to see the youngster regaining his feet after a tricky few years in the North West, but his departure could be one the Red Devils live to regret.

Man Utd have signed a "machine" who looks like a new Bruno-type player

Man Utd look like they’ve snapped up the next Bruno Fernandes at Old Trafford…

Man Utd have homegrown Wharton in 18-year-old who's lighting up Carrington

For a club once blessed with the likes of Paul Scholes and Roy Keane, the midfield unit at Manchester United has now long been a cause for concern, amid a string of errant additions in that department.

Since the days of Scholes himself, or even Michael Carrick more recently, the Red Devils have seen so much upheaval in the centre of the park, with perhaps the longest stable pairing of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era emerging as Fred and Scott McTominay – two players dubbed “not good enough” by Keane.

£89m was dished out on Paul Pogba. £40m was splashed out on Donny van de Beek. An ageing Casemiro, meanwhile, joined for a fee that could reach £70m, having since been joined at Old Trafford by fellow South American, Manuel Ugarte, on a £50m deal.

So much investment, yet such little reward, with Ruben Amorim left with a squad so ill-suited to his 3-4-2-1 system, having yet to settle on a first-choice partner to everpresent skipper, Bruno Fernandes, in that midfield two.

There is perhaps a sense that United will live to regret this summer’s recruitment decisions, having gone all in on a new-look forward line of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, albeit while neglecting to strengthen in the engine room.

While the INEOS hierarchy flirted with a £100m plus move for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, no such deal was struck, with the recent suggestions indicating that the club might now have turned their attention to another Premier League sensation – Adam Wharton.

The latest on Man Utd's interest in Adam Wharton

It has become a common theme of the last decade or so for United to have hesitated over moving for a player in their youth, only to then be forced to pay over the odds for that talent later down the line.

Indeed, the Red Devils had come close to prising a teenage Moises Caicedo from his native Ecuador for a measly fee of just £4m, albeit with a complication surrounding his representatives seeing the midfielder move to the Amex instead. Now he’s the “best” midfielder in the Premier League, according to Gary Neville.

Even this summer’s marquee £74m arrival, Sesko, was offered to United for just a fraction of that cost at £2.5m, back in 2019, although with the powers that be again spurning that opportunity.

A repeat scenario appears to have occurred with regard to Wharton, with respected journalist Andy Mitten having revealed that the Old Trafford side were offered the chance to sign the England international prior to his exit from Blackburn Rovers, only to have misgivings over the optics of signing an inexperienced figure from the Championship.

The now 21-year-old ultimately joined current side Crystal Palace for a fee rising to £22m back in February 2024, since enjoying a meteoric rise that includes earning a place in that summer’s Euro 2024 squad, while also playing his part as the Eagles romped to FA Cup glory last term.

While yet to truly establish himself at international level, the silky left-footer is one of the top-flight’s brightest talents, with reports over the summer indicating that he was deemed a viable alternative to Baleba amid United’s midfield search.

The latest claim is that Amorim and co could even look to lodge a £60m bid for the youngster in 2026, albeit with prior reports outlining that the Conference League outfit would be looking for more than £100m for their prized possession.

Although Wharton’s familiarity with playing in a midfield pairing would be beneficial, whether he is worth such an extreme outlay remains to be seen. Might Amorim consider looking to the academy instead?

Why Jack Fletcher can be Man Utd's own Wharton

The lack of academy promotion has been a glaring issue in the Portuguese’s tenure thus far, with the 40-year-old perhaps sharing the view of Sir Jim Ratcliffe that the youth ranks have “really slipped” of late.

While the ex-Sporting CP boss did memorably name eight teenagers on the bench for the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in February, amid a first-team injury crisis, only Chido Obi, Harry Amass and Tyler Fredricson have debuted during his tenure.

With the midfield department looking so short of depth in the senior set-up, however, with Kobbie Mainoo rounding off the quartet of Casemiro, Fernandes and Ugarte, that is certainly one area of the pitch where in-house reinforcements could be needed.

There are high hopes for Sekou Kone, signed for just £1m last summer, although in terms of producing a homegrown Wharton, it is 18-year-old Jack Fletcher who undoubtedly fits the bill.

Son of ex-United star and current U18s coach, Darren, the teenage playmaker joined the club from rivals Manchester City alongside his twin brother Tyler back in 2023, representing a real coup for those at Old Trafford.

While still yet to make his senior debut, Jack – who turns out for England at youth level – was part of the matchday squad for that night away at Spurs earlier this year, having featured on the bench for five league games in total in 2024/25.

An elegant left-footer, in the mould of Wharton, Fletcher’s brief promotion was just reward for a fine season all-round in the academy set-up, having provided 15 goals and assists in 22 recorded games across all fronts, as per Transfermarkt.

The highlight of those involvements undoubtedly came in the EFL Trophy away at Barnsley, with the 5 foot 11 midfielder scoring twice to complete a remarkable comeback for United’s U21 side, including netting an outrageous strike from range on the volley.

The current campaign has seen Fletcher flit between a midfield role and a left-back berth, although he has still scored twice already in all competitions, representing a creative, forward-thinking outlet wherever he is deployed on the pitch.

Despite his recent full-back switch pointing to a potential future at wing-back in Amorim’s side, it is as a left-sided central midfielder where Fletcher is likely to flourish, with analyst Ben Mattinson suggesting that he has “everything you’d want” for that latter role.

A player who “glides around the pitch with elegance and power”, according to Mattinson, the teen’s likeness to Wharton is evident to see, with United likely to save themselves a huge outlay if they do look to those at Carrington instead.

Having already missed their chance with Wharton in the past, perhaps the Red Devils should view the Palace man as a ship that has sailed. They already have their own future midfield star in Fletcher anyway.

Martin can save his job by benching Aasgaard for Rangers' "best player"

After yet another dismal result on Saturday, the pressure has only intensified further on Glasgow Rangers manager Russell Martin.

At the weekend, the Gers suffered their first Premiership defeat of the season, beaten 2-0 by Heart of Midlothian; the Jambos’ securing a first victory at Ibrox since 2014.

However, having drawn their previous four league matches, this is the Light Blues’ worst start to a season since 1978, sat tenth in the table, not forgetting the fact that they were embarrassingly hammered 9-1 on aggregate by Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs too.

Speaking on Sky Sports News shortly after full-time, Rangers legend Kris Boyd labelled it “terrible” and “embarrassing”, noting that Hearts supporters started signing “you’re getting sacked in the morning”, only for Rangers supporters to join in.

The Gers’ next fixture is Saturday evening’s League Cup quarter-final against in-form Hibernian so, for Martin to save his job, he simply must reintegrate the club’s “best player” ahead of that huge tie.

That, however, might involved dropping Thelo Aasgaard.

What Thelo Aasgaard should bring to Rangers

Few enjoyed a more productive international break than Aasgaard who, after coming off the bench in the 64th minute on Tuesday, scored four times as Norway crushed Moldova 11-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Oslo.

This means the Merseyside-born Norwegian has now netted five goals in just three international caps, opening his account on debut in the reverse fixture in Chișinău earlier this year.

Over the summer, the 23-year-old joined Rangers for £3.5m from Luton Town, following their relegation to EFL League One, just six months after moving to the Hatters from Wigan for around £3m.

At the time of his arrival in Glasgow, Kai Watson was certainly excited, noting that his “stock has massively risen” in recent months, labelling him a “technical dribbler”, believing he can play as an attacking midfielder or out-wide.

Well, Rangers supporters are yet to see very much of that so far, yet to register either a goal or an assist in six appearances for the club.

Against Hearts on Saturday, Aasgaard touched the ball 67 times, only defenders James Tavernier (106) and John Souttar (103) accumulated more, but he did very little with it, completing just 77% of his passes, losing possession on 16 occasions, the second most of any Rangers player.

After the match, he was confronted by angry supporters in the car park, repeatedly saying “I understand, I understand”, but should Aasgaard be the man taken out of the team against Hibs, because it would allow Rangers’ “best player” to return?

Rangers' "best player" can save Martin

Last season, during a generally miserable campaign, Nicolas Raskin was a rare shining light, thereby named the club’s player of the year and players’ player of the year at the end of the season awards.

The table below emphasises his importance.

As the table documents, Raskin ranked in the top five for pretty much every metric we could find last season, ranging from goals, assists and chances created, as well as passing, touches and defensive statistics, including tackles and ball recoveries.

Thus, one would assume a new manager would want to make the Belgian international a central pillar of their team, but Martin has had other ideas.

Across Rangers’ 12 matches this season, Raskin has started six, come off the bench in three and not even been among the substitutes for the other three, including the Old Firm as well as Saturday’s defeat to Hearts.

It has been widely reported that the midfielder and the manager have had a falling out, with Martin claiming this has been “resolved”, but this didn’t appear to be the case as Raskin watched on bereft from the director’s box at the weekend, with presenter Darrell Currie mystified as to how they can leave “their best player in the stand”.

Instead, Martin started Mohamed Diomandé, Connor Barron and the aforementioned Aasgaard as his midfield three, but fair to say they were ineffective.

A week ago, Raskin was on target during Belgium’s 6-0 demolition of Kazakhstan in a World Cup qualifier at Stade Constant Vanden Stock, completing a midfield trio alongside Youri Tielemans and Kevin De Bruyne, which isn’t bad, is it?

This has only made Rangers supporters even more irate, exclaiming if he’s good enough to start for Belgium, surely he should be starting for his club, so if Martin harbours any hopes of turning things around, he simply must reintegrate his star man ahead of Aasgaard.
