According to reliable Stamford Bridge journalist Simon Phillips, Chelsea are expected to invest significantly in a new centre-back, with Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi and Bournemouth sensation Dean Huijsen both mentioned as top targets.

Guehi is entering the final 12 months of his Palace contract, and Chelsea are believed to be seriously considering the prospect of re-signing the Cobham academy graduate, who departed for Selhurst Park in 2021 (The Mirror).

Meanwhile, Bournemouth’s Huijsen is expected to depart the Vitality Stadium this summer, with his £50 million release clause attracting attention from a host of top Premier League sides, including Chelsea.

As reported by David Ornstein, Chelsea have held talks with Huijsen’s representatives, alongside the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal, as England’s elite bid to battle for the Spaniard’s in-demand signature. However, there is also competition from abroad, as Vincent Kompany reportedly tells Bayern Munich to move for Huijsen as well (Football Insider).

Amidst their hot pursuit of the 20-year-old, Maresca’s side may also bolster their full-back options.

Jules Koundé was mentioned as a Chelsea target this week, according to reports in Spain, but they’ve also got their eyes on Ajax starlet Jorrel Hato.

“Jorrel Hato is still a player they love – they’ve done all the work on him for years – they’ve been following him since he was 16,” said Bailey to The Boot Room recently.

“Liverpool like him as well. It wouldn’t surprise me if Hato came to England this year.”

The price of his signature, according to other reports, sits at around £40 million – which could be a bargain where Chelsea are concerned.

The versatile teenager can play at both left-back and as a left-sided centre-back when required, plugging two different gaps for Maresca, and there is a reason that no Ajax player has been handed more league minutes than Hato this season (WhoScored).

Since Diego Costa left Chelsea back in 2017, the Blues have struggled to find a centre-forward worthy of leading the line.

The Spanish forward netted 59 goals and provided 21 assists in his 120 appearances for the club, totaling 9,799 minutes played.

Chelsea strikers that have attempted to fill this void include Álvaro Morata, Olivier Giroud, Romelu Lukaku, Tammy Abraham and Nicolas Jackson, none of whom have managed a 20+ goal season.

Jackson feels as though he may have the potential to do just that but he needs to work on his finishing, notably failing to score from five shots against Ipswich on Sunday afternoon.

Costa was known for being a handful for defenders, running the channels, turning half-chances into big chances and, of course, scoring goals.

Chelsea are still looking to replace that presence upfront, and this summer could play a big part in doing so.

His ability to make runs and create something out of nothing is very similar to Costa, who would often hustle to create his own chances. As a result, he could be game-changing for Palmer.

Palmer has suffered from a poor vein of form in recent weeks, going ten Premier League games without a goal, only assisting three goals in this timeframe.

That said, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder has the highest xA (expected assists) in the Premier League this season, generating 7.9 xA so far.

As you can see from comparing the underlying metrics of Gyokeres and Palmer, Chelsea’s star could benefit by having a clinical striker in and around the box.

Unlike Jackson, he needs someone who is ready to finish those chances he is serving up week on week. Gyokeres averages 0.66 xG per 90, scoring 1.19 goals per 90 and scoring 0.18 goals/shot, which would only help Palmer’s numbers.

Whilst the Englishman clearly has a good relationship with Jackson, adding a striker like Gyokeres, who can bring the same physical traits that Costa had to the club, whilst not losing the channel running and link-up play offered by Jackson, could be the happy medium to finding the Blues’ perfect striker.

It sounds harsh, but when looking at this season compared to the campaign in which he turned 30, the 21/22 season, it’s clear that he’s taken a step back.

For example, in that campaign, he scored 24 goals and provided eight assists in 45 games, totalling 3526 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.40 games, or every 110.18 minutes.

In contrast, he has scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists in 42 appearances, totalling 2981 minutes this year, which works out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.82 games, or every 129.60 minutes.

In short, Son remains a player who could undoubtedly contribute for the next couple of years, but he is someone who will need to be replaced, and luckily, Hotspur Way may be in the process of brewing the perfect player.

It was a statement quarter-final victory over Carlo Ancelotti’s which shocked the whole of Europe, beating the Spanish heavyweights 5-1 on aggregate, with club-record signing Declan Rice putting in two world-class performances over the two legs.

Arsenal given 50 per cent discount for Bayern winger Kingsley Coman

Off the field, Berta is already preparing to back Arteta by signing star upgrades for the squad this summer.

According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg and other sources, £280,000-per-week Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman is emerging as a serious target.

Plettenberg reported recently that Arsenal are in “ongoing” and “direct” talks with Coman’s representatives over a summer move, with fellow reliable journalist Ben Jacobs now sharing an update of his own for TEAMtalk.

The reporter states Bayern could let Coman leave for a half-price fee of £30 million, with his initial value of £60 million dropping “significantly” since last summer. The France international’s contract expires in 2027, so Vincent Kompany’s side have precious little time to make any cash off his sale.

£30m would still come as a profit for Bayern, considering they only signed him for £18 million from Juventus in 2017, so this could be a win-win for both parties.

Called a “complete” forward by those who’ve worked with him, Coman would leave Bayern as a legend, having racked up 330 appearances for the club in total with 69 goals and 69 assists to show for his efforts.
