43-year-old Frank Nsubuga in Uganda squad for 2024 T20 World Cup

Brian Masaba will captain Uganda in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, their first appearance in a senior men’s ICC World Cup in any format.Masaba leads a squad of 15 that includes 43-year-old Frank Nsubuga, an offspinning allrounder who is set to be the oldest player in the tournament ahead of Oman’s Mohammad Nadeem and Naseem Khushi, both of whom are 41. Riazat Ali Shah, who was born in Gilgit in Pakistan and moved to Uganda at the age of 16, has been named vice-captain, while Ronald Lutaaya and Innocent Mwebaze are the two travelling reserve players.Uganda’s squad has five changes to the 17-player group that oversaw their progression to the T20 World Cup from the Africa qualifiers last year. Wicketkeeper Cyrus Kakuru, seamer David Wabwire, batter Pascal Murungi and experienced left-armer Jonathan Ssebanja have not made the cut while Lutaaya is in the reserves. Fred Achelam, who was Uganda’s wicketkeeper at the Africa Games in Ghana earlier this year, will take the gloves while allrounder Juma Miyagi and medium-pacer Cosmas Kyewuta have been included in the squad. The selections were reward for members of the team who reached the semi-finals of the African Games, where they lost to Namibia.Uganda squad for T20 World Cup 2024•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

At that tournament, Ugandan players dominated the run and wicket charts as three of the top five run-scorers – Roger Mukasa, Simon Ssesazi and Dinesh Nakrani – and two of the three leading wicket-takers – Alpesh Ramjani and Miyagi – came from their camp. Robinson Obuya, who is also in the T20 World Cup squad, had the highest strike-rate at 190.90 albeit from only two innings. Simon Ssezazi is also Uganda’s all-time leading T20I run-scorer and the only batter from his country with more than 2000 T20I runs to his name, while his brother, left-arm spinner Henry Ssesyondo, is their leading wicket-taker in the format and six away from becoming the first Ugandan to 100 T20I wickets.Uganda travel to the T20 World Cup under a new coach, Abhay Sharma, a former Indian first-class cricketer who was fielding coach for the Indian Under-19, A and women’s teams. He joined them last month for training sessions in Uganda. The squad is currently in Sri Lanka, completing a two-week training camp that includes matches against the Sri Lankan A and Army side, as preparation for their biggest assignment to date.Uganda are in Group C at the T20 World Cup, along with Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and West Indies, and play their first match against Afghanistan in Providence, Guyana on June 4.

Lamine Yamal in Miami? La Liga hoping to play Villarreal vs Barcelona in Lionel Messi's new home

Spanish football could be on the brink of a groundbreaking moment and it’s FC Barcelona leading the charge. According to reports in Sport, the Catalan club is pushing for its December league fixture against Villarreal to be staged not in Spain, but under the Florida sun at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. If approved, it would mark the first official La Liga match ever played outside Spain.

  • Barcelona push for Miami league showdown
  • RFEF decision could reshape Spanish football
  • UEFA, FIFA sign-off still required

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is set to meet tomorrow to decide whether the ambitious plan goes forward. The proposal, to be tabled Monday, will request UEFA’s backing for the December 20 clash, which is currently part of Matchday 17 in the 2025/26 La Liga calendar. Should European football’s governing body give the green light, the matter would then move up to FIFA, which ultimately holds the authority to approve or reject domestic matches taking place abroad.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Under the current fixture list, Barcelona are due to face Villarreal at the Estadio de La Ceramica on December 20. The reverse fixture at the Spotify Camp Nou is scheduled for March 1, 2026. But Barca’s latest push would see the first meeting swapped for a spectacle in Miami, home to Lionel Messi. That week is free from European competition, and while the Copa del Rey’s Round of 32 is pencilled in for December 16-18, the schedule could be reshaped to give both teams the travel time they’d need to cross the Atlantic and prepare.

  • TELL ME MORE

La Liga president Javier Tebas has made no secret of his desire to take Spanish football to an international audience. And by the looks of it, it might become reality in the 2025-26 campaign. There have been reports that FIFA have accepted that leagues may play one official match per season overseas, which will further aid Tebas' endeavours.

UEFA must first give the thumbs-up, ensuring the match complies with European competition guidelines, before FIFA delivers the ultimate ruling on whether La Liga can break new ground. It’s a high-stakes process, but insiders suggest the international governing bodies may be more open than in previous years, especially with other leagues also exploring global expansion.

'Doing this at 33 is incredible' – Mohamed Salah reacts to winning record-breaking third PFA Players' Player of the Year award after 'best season of my career' as Liverpool talisman references failed Chelsea spell

Mohamed Salah has reacted to winning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award for a third time, cementing his status as one of the Premier League’s all-time greats. In a stunning 2024-25 campaign, Salah not only inspired Liverpool to the Premier League title but also broke several records in the process.

After scoring 34 goals and providing 23 assists from 52 appearances across all competitions, Salah became the first-ever player to secure three PFA Players’ Player of the Year awards. His assist tally of 18 in the English top flight was only bettered by two players in Premier League history: Manchester City legend Kevin De Bruyne and Arsenal stalwart Thierry Henry.

Salah’s individual brilliance was not the only recognition for Liverpool after they powered their way to their record-equalling 20th Premier League title last season. The forward was joined in the Premier League Team of the Year by his team-mates Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, and Alexis Mac Allister.

WHAT SALAH SAID

When Salah received the award from Ian Rush, Liverpool’s all-time leading goal scorer, it was a moment of reflection for the player. He took a moment to speak about his journey from Egypt to the pinnacle of world football, revealing the doubts that once surrounded his career, especially after his struggles at Chelsea.

"It’s an incredible feeling. I want to thank everyone who voted for me. Doing this at the age of 33 is incredible," said Salah. "I remember ten years ago, I didn’t make it at Chelsea. When you go somewhere and you don’t make it, it’s always on your mind. I look at myself. A guy coming from Egypt, making it to the top level and making history."

Reflecting on what was arguably his best-ever season at Liverpool, Salah added on the club website: "I think we had a great season and I also had my best season in the club, maybe in my career as well. To win the league, I'm glad we managed to do that, and hopefully it will continue this year. I found always a way to feel hungry and just need more."

While Salah’s triumph dominated the headlines, the PFA awards also recognised other stellar performances. In the Championship, James Trafford claimed the Player of the Year award after his outstanding performances for Burnley before joining Manchester City.

Ex-Spurs star claims Eberechi Eze chose Arsenal move to 'win more trophies' as Tottenham suffer humiliating transfer snub

Ex-Arsenal and Tottenham defender William Gallas has suggested Eberechi Eze chose the Gunners as "he wants to get his hands on more trophies".

  • Eze headed to Emirates
  • Palace star had agreed terms with Spurs
  • Gallas: Arsenal have "more chance to win things"

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Gallas was speaking with Gambling Zone about Eze's move. The Crystal Palace star has decided to snub Tottenham in favour of their north London rivals, with the Gunners and Eagles agreeing a £67.5m ($90m) deal late last night. Eze had reportedly agreed personal terms with Spurs before making his decision.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The ex-Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea defender commented on Eze's thought process in the move. Gallas suggested it will be difficult for the 27-year-old to go from being the main man in south London, to a more competitive squad at Arsenal. However, Gallas suggests this decision is an indication that Eze is prioritising competitive success over personal game time by eschewing Daniel Levy and Thomas Frank's advances.

  • WHAT GALLAS SAID

Gallas said: "It's always the same question in this situation. What does the player really want? You know, he will try to see what is in the best interest for himself. It’ll be about money. It will be about if he will have enough time, enough minutes to play.

"If you’re Eze, you don’t want to go from Crystal Palace, where you were the main guy, to move to one of the biggest clubs if you’re not going to play much. You don’t want to join a club and become frustrated with your minutes.

"Eze will try to find the best solution for himself. Even if Spurs won the Europa League last year, you probably have more chances to win things at Arsenal over the next few years.

"Arsenal got close to winning the Champions League last year, but then they came up against Paris Saint-Germain and made a mistake – they didn’t take their chances and were punished. So it really depends on how he sees his career. Does he want to play every week or does he want to get his hands on more trophies?"

    WHAT NEXT FOR EZE?

Earlier this week, Oliver Glasner said Eze and Marc Guehi would both feature in Crystal Palace's Conference League tie against Norwegian side Fredrikstad FK. It's a credit to both players that both remain committed to their club in the face of imminent transfer deals; Guehi has been heavily linked with Liverpool in the past few days.

Leeds have secured the services of the 27-year-old in what is their tenth signing of the summer transfer window. The full-back, who has one England cap to his name, will now try and keep the Whites in the Premier League this season after his £10 million ($13.5m) transfer.

He told the club's website: “Obviously to join a club of this size and to have the history it has had, and being back in the Premier League was a massive thing for me, so I'm over the moon to have joined. It's been a while since I've known of the interest, but obviously I was still a Leicester player, so I had to give my all for Leicester whilst I was there. That's something obviously that you can expect from me when I put on a Leeds shirt, is to give my all when I'm on the pitch. But for it to finally have happened, it’s taken a weight off my shoulders for sure. Everyone that I've spoken to about the club and the area has had great things to say about it. So I'm excited to join the lads and get to work."

After left-back Junior Firpo departed Leeds earlier this year, the versatile defender will add more competition in Daniel Farke's backline. He now joins Anton Stach, Noah Okafor, Jaka Bijol, Lucas Perri, Sean Longstaff, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Sebastiaan Bornauw, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha as Leeds' transfer window recruits.
