Orr begins to fulfil expectations with maiden Hampshire century

New boy Ali Orr began to fulfil the expectations placed on him with a smart maiden Hampshire century as he led a positive batting day for his side against Durham in the Vitality County Championship.Opening batter Orr, who moved from boyhood club Sussex in the winter, expertly amassed 126, his first Championship hundred since September 2022 and his fifth all told.Spinner Callum Parkinson was the pick of the Durham attack – taking 3 for 110 – but Tom Prest’s whirlwind 65 gave the day to the hosts, who ended on 336 for 4.Orr had become the latest high-profile player to leave Hove – after the likes of Luke Wells, Ben Brown and George Garton – and his departure coincided with Chris Adams and Ian Gould leaving their posts on the cricket committee. It was said it was the latest illustration of the ‘big’ counties consuming the ‘smaller’ ones.In eventuality, Hampshire have their best shot at ending their opening-batting woes, while Sussex have barely felt the effects – they are top of Division Two despite playing a game fewer than the three teams behind them.It hadn’t been a smooth start to life at the western end of the A27 for Orr – unsurprising given the mixture of hype and anger that marked his transfer. He ran out his opening partner Fletcha Middleton in their first innings together to start a scoring run of: 10, 13, 4, 26 and 6. This innings was exactly what had been promised when he signed.Orr saw off the new ball with little worry after captain James Vince had chosen to bat, and showed a business to rotate the strike early on.Hampshire were without the ill Mohammed Abbas – a blessing for Durham as he dispatched them for their two lowest first-class scores in one afternoon when playing for Leicestershire in 2018. Felix Organ was brought in as his replacement, on a pitch expected to turn.Left-arm wrist spinner Parkinson got the first look at those capabilities when he was tossed the ball in the 18th over. With his third ball he ripped one back almost 18cm with a googly to pin back Middleton’s middle stump. But the breaking of a 48-run opening stand did not spark a rush of spinning wickets. Instead, Orr found his rhythm against the pace of Matt Potts and the wiliness of Peter Siddle as he reached his maiden Hampshire half-century in 94 balls.Almost 60 per cent of his runs would come on the leg side, although that masked his true tactic; namely to scamper singles off his legs and score his boundaries pleasingly around the ground. He added another 86 with Nick Gubbins – who never found fluency in his 31 before he scooped Parkinson straight up to Ollie Robinson.Orr got stuck on 90, for almost half an hour, with blocking and ball replacements stopping his route to three figures, but when it came – in 168 balls – he delivered a triumphant fist pump towards a cheering home balcony. He departed with a tame plink to extra cover to give Siddle his first for his new county, before Vince edged behind for a disjointed 41 to give Parkinson his third. The quick-fire double didn’t put Prest off entering with gusto, sending four of his first 12 balls to the boundary before smashing his 13th for six. With Liam Dawson he upped the run-rate considerably, despite the second new ball, reaching his fifty in 62 balls during an 81-run unbroken partnership.

Vinicius Jr warned against 'poisonous fight' with Real Madrid as contract demand could 'backfire' after disappointing season alongside Kylian Mbappe

Athletic Club's sporting director Rafael Alkorta says Vinicius Junior's wage demands may turn into a "poisonous fight" with Real Madrid.

Bilbao's sporting director warns ViniciusClaims Real Madrid rewards the deservingLaments winger's form in previous campaignFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Contract talks between Real Madrid and Vinicius have stalled after the Brazilian asked to be the highest-paid player in the squad, which irked the Madrid camp. Bilbao's sporting director and ex-Madrid player Alkorta says the 25-year-old should not test Madrid president Florentino Perez as it may 'backfire', and instead showcase his worthiness to earn rewards.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Vinicius had a significant drop in his form in the 2024-25 campaign, scoring a total of 22 goals and registering 19 assists in 58 games, compared to his 2023-24 season, in which he scored 24 and provided 11 assists in 39 games. Yet, when the contract renewal discussions were held, the winger asked for a salary higher than that of Kylian Mbappe. Alkorta claims the player didn't perform well last season and should not demand a pay rise, while also asserting that the battle for money can turn into a 'poisonous fight', citing the example of Sergio Ramos as one for the Brazilian to learn from.

WHAT ALKORTA SAID

Talking to about Vinicius's drop in form after Mbappe's signing, Alkorta said: "He's one of the best in the world, without a doubt. Trying to put pressure on Florentino Perez could backfire. Let's remember what happened with [Sergio] Ramos. Since they moved him to the left wing, I haven't seen him doing well. Playing with Mbappe has been difficult for him. They're young and ambitious, but the environment needs to advise them better. Now is not the time to demand things as if they had had a great season. Last year, changing the system to play him and Mbappe didn't work out entirely. If he focuses on performing at his best, the rest will follow. Real Madrid always reward those who prove their worth on the pitch."

Further explaining how a fight over salary can turn ugly, Alkorta said: "These fights are poisonous. Florentino is affectionate, but he doesn't hesitate to make tough decisions. He needs to be cool. If he has a good season, he'll have the strength to negotiate."

However, the club are aware that the Brazilian might not switch clubs as of now and are waiting for the right time to make a move. For now, Vinicius has publicly stated he wants to continue with Madrid. The Spanish side are set to face Osasuna in their opening La Liga fixture on August 19.

South Africa to host Sri Lanka and Pakistan men's teams during 2024-25 home summer

The women’s team will host England for three T20Is, three ODIs and a Test

Firdose Moonda03-May-2024South Africa will host Sri Lanka and Pakistan’s men’s teams and England’s women’s team in the 2024-25 summer for a total of 17 international fixtures, including five Tests, between November and January. The men’s Test series form part of the World Test Championship and will be played in Durban and Gqeberha (Sri Lanka), and Centurion and Cape Town (Pakistan), which leaves the country’s biggest venue – the Wanderers in Johannesburg – without a Test for the second summer in succession. The Wanderers did not host either of the two Tests against India in the 2023-24 summer and with South Africa not due to host any Tests in the 2025-26 summer, the earliest the venue can hope for a Test fixture is 2026. Insiders told ESPNcricinfo that officials were given “no explanation” for why the venue has been snubbed, though it retains the annual Pink Day fixture – an ODI match to raise funds for breast cancer treatment.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe women’s Test will be played in Bloemfontein, which last hosted a Test seven years ago, when the men played Bangladesh in October 2017. Kingsmead and St George’s Park also last saw Test action against Bangladesh, in the 2021-22 season, and will be the venues for the Sri Lanka series. It was at these same two grounds that Sri Lanka won their first Test series against South Africa in 2019. The Sri Lanka series is red-ball only.ESPNcricinfo LtdThat will be followed by a full tour from Pakistan, who will play three T20Is and three ODIs before the festive-season Tests. The Boxing Day Test will be held at SuperSport Park before the New Year’s Test at Newlands, which ends on January 7. The men’s team will then have no further home international assignments, with the SA20 due to start shortly afterwards and run into early February. The exact dates are yet to be confirmed and there is a potential overlap with an ODI tri-series in Pakistan before the Champions Trophy, pencilled in for mid-February.The women’s team will host England for three T20Is, three ODIs, including the Black Day ODI to raise awareness about gender-based violence, and a Test. They have one fixture in each white-ball format at a premier ground: a T20I in Centurion and an ODI in Durban. The Test will be the first women’s Test played in the country in 22 years, since South Africa played India in Paarl in 2002.

'He would be perfect' – Man Utd told they made mistake selling Scott McTominay as Scotland international 'ticks the boxes' for Old Trafford rebuild

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

As the Scotland international flourished, United floundered in the Premier League and Europa League – leaving them without continental competition for 2025-26. Questions continue to be asked of important squad-building decisions at Old Trafford.

  • WHAT BOYD SAID

Former Scotland star Kris Boyd has told : “I think Scott McTominay would be perfect for what Ruben Amorim wants from his players at Manchester United. He wants players with legs who can get up and down the pitch. That’s definitely what he’s got, and he’s got a good size physique as well.

“United produced him so he had that in his DNA, and Amorim must wish he had never left. He’s gone away and shown how good he is, perhaps he felt he had a point to prove too. I think maybe absence has improved his reputation as he’s now showing the club what they’re missing.

“I think McTominay might have needed time to rebuild his career, and I think Amorim wishes he had him in the squad. He ticks the boxes of what Amorim has been signing and wants at United.”

While starring at club level, McTominay has become a talismanic presence for Scotland. Quizzed on whether he could be considered their best player of the millennium, Boyd added: “I think everybody gets bogged down in the here and now, but there’s no denying he’s done exceptionally well, there’s no denying it. I think over Steve Clarke’s time in charge, Andy Robertson has been a great captain, but I think John McGinn and Scott McTominay have been the standout players for Scotland.

“McTominay went to Napoli after leaving United, won the league, has hero status in Naples for life after the season he had.

“Scotland have had good players over the years but haven’t managed to get the national side into major tournaments. We’ve had Barry Ferguson and Darren Fletcher who’ve been excellent two, but McTominay is the best over the last few years, no doubt.”

Cameron Bancroft, Ben Charlesworth compile record-breaking 316-run stand

Big hundreds from openers leave Leicestershire playing catch-up at Grace Road

ECB Reporters Network17-May-2024A record breaking opening partnership between Cameron Bancroft and Ben Charlesworth saw Gloucestershire dominate the opening day of their Division Two Vitality county championship match against Leicestershire at the UptonSteel County Ground, Grace Road. The pair put on 316 after the visitors were put into bat by Foxes skipper Lewis Hill, beating the previous record opening partnership made against Leicestershire in first-class cricket, the 315 put on by Herbert Sutcliffe and Len Hutton for Yorkshire in 1937.Bancroft’s 160 was his second century in as many innings, and his 28th in first-class cricket. Charlesworth’s 126, which included ten fours and six sixes, was his maiden three figure score. Both had a moment of fortune, Bancroft when he was dropped at slip off the bowling of Rehan Ahmed when on 84, and Charlesworth when his middle stump was uprooted by a Josh Hull no-ball on 58.Both sides made changes to their starting elevens from their previous matches. Leicestershire, having drawn their first five championship fixtures – in no small part due to time lost to the weather – brought highly rated left-arm seam prospect Hull into their eleven in place of short-term loanee Ben Green, who had returned to home county Somerset. Gloucestershire, fresh from ending their run of 18 games without a win by beating Northants, gave a debut to Australian all-rounder Beau Webster, one of four changes. Fast bowler Marchant de Lange, whose eight wickets in the match had been key to the success at Wantage Road, was said to be unavailable due to injury, with the others to miss out being Singh Dale, Tom Price and Zafar Gohar.Humid conditions, and a green tinge to the pitch, persuaded Hill to bowl first after winning the toss. A lunchtime scoreline of 107 for 0 suggested he had been ill-advised, but there had been some movement for the bowlers, both in the air and occasionally off the seam: unfortunately for Hill and Leicestershire there were also too many deliveries off which Bancroft and Charlesworth could and did score, so that although the bat was beaten from time to time, the scoreboard kept moving. Bancroft hit seven boundaries in going to his 50 off 84 balls, his third consecutive half-century. Charlesworth struggled to time the ball, at times to his obvious frustration, but was unbeaten on 29 off 85 deliveries at the interval. Other than a handful of optimistic shouts for leg before and catches behind the wicket, no chances were created. It was a similar story in the afternoon, though Hull will consider himself unfortunate when his full swinging delivery beat Charlesworth’s defence and flattened middle stump, only for his celebration to be cut short by the sight of the umpire’s extended arm. Bancroft too might have gone before reaching three figures, edging Ahmed low to first slip where Peter Hanscomb was unable to take the chance low to his left.Charlesworth took full advantage, going to his hundred with a huge straight straight six, one of six maximums before he holed out to long-off off the part-time off-spin of Louis Kimber. By then the partnership had passed 300, leaving Gloucestershire’s previous opening record against Leicestershire, the 201 put on by Kadeer Ali and Craig Spearman on the same ground in 2007, well behind.Bancroft was to follow, chopping a delivery from Ben MIke on to his stumps, before Ollie Price and Miles Hammond saw Gloucestershire through to the close, nine balls early due to bad light.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Belgian playmaker has played under some impressive names across his spells at Genk, Chelsea, Werder Bremen, Wolfsburg and City. Jose Mourinho, Manuel Pellegrini and Dieter Hecking all had him under their wing before he teamed up for a long period of success with Guardiola at City. The 34-year-old spent eight years under Guardiola, winning multiple titles, including the Champions League in 2023. After the Premier League side decided against renewing his contract this summer, he opted to unite with Conte and ex-team-mate Romelu Lukaku in Serie A. After just a few weeks, he has already observed some key differences between his new coach and his old one.

  • WHAT DE BRUYNE SAID

In an interview with , De Bruyne reflected on the differences between working under Guardiola and Conte: "I'd say they're two different ways of playing: Pep is probably a little more focused on ball control and possession, while Conte is a little more structured in his game and focuses a lot on mentality. Pep works more on the zonal area. There are a couple of different things, but every coach has his own principles and characteristics."

He was also asked about the grand welcome he received upon his arrival in Serie A, where some dubbed him "the king".

"I'm not the king, I'm just a footballer," he said. "I don't pay much attention to certain things, I try to do my job as best I can, but obviously it's nice to be appreciated. I hope I can continue to have a great career."

Rahul wanted '20 more' from himself and Hooda

Following the loss to Royals, LSG captain also explains why he held Ravi Bishnoi back till “it was a bit too late” for him to make a difference in the chase

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Apr-20241:39

Moody: LSG’s decision to hold Bishnoi back was ‘very strange’

KL Rahul said that Lucknow Super Giants’ failure to maximise their total cost them their home game against Rajasthan Royals.”We left about 20 runs behind,” Rahul told the host broadcaster after the game. “We didn’t get off to an ideal start but the partnership that me and Deepak Hooda had [got us on track].”LSG had been reduced to 11 for 2 after being put in to bat but recovered while maintaining a good run rate thanks to Rahul and Hooda’s 115-run stand off 62 balls for the third wicket. The duo smashed 45 in the three overs leading up to Hooda falling for a 31-ball 50. Rahul carried on but couldn’t apply the finishing touches. He perished in the 18th over and LSG mustered only 25 runs in their last last three overs to finish with 196 for 5.Related

Samson and Jurel seal Royals' eighth win in nine games

“Once we were set, that’s the time [in which] if Hooda could have pushed on, got 20 more runs and if I could have pushed on and gotten 20 more runs, we could’ve probably finished at 220; and we’re seeing with more games being played that it’s important for the batters to make sure we give that extra cushion for the bowlers.”They [RR] bowled well in the last couple of overs, we were in a good position at 150 for 3 by the end of the 15th over. So, I think we should have capitalised a bit more and got about 20-25 runs more.”RR got off to a strong start in the chase but then LSG fought back to remove the in-form trio of Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag in quick succession to have them 78 for 3 in the ninth. Legspinner Amit Mishra, playing his first game of the season, was brought in as the Impact Player and got Parag with his fourth ball. Mishra’s second over, the 11th, went for 12 and he did not bowl another.Ravi Bishnoi, who was brought on in the 16th over, bowled just the one over•BCCI

Left-arm spinner Krunal Pandya bowled out at the end of 15 overs, but LSG’s other main spin option, legspinner Ravi Bishnoi, who has played all nine of their games this season, was denied an opportunity to bowl till the 16th over. At that point the equation read 53 needed off 30 with seven wickets in hand. Rahul explained the reasoning behind bringing Mishra into the XI, and Bishnoi being held back.”Mishra is an experienced player and we’ve been thinking about using him from the first game,” Rahul said. “Today was the day where we felt like he could be useful against their batters in the middle [order] with how slow he bowls and the slightly larger boundary. That was the idea of using him and we were hoping to use Bishnoi in the latter half.”But once the runs kept flowing – even when they lost wickets, they just made sure that they put pressure on our bowlers… There was a period of two or three overs where Krunal bowled really well and we really squeezed them hard.”But then, once the faster bowlers came on, they [the batters] used the pace really well and I couldn’t find a good time to bring in Bishnoi, and I think it was a bit too late by the time I got him on. Obviously, the plan was to keep him at the back end and make sure if Rovman [Powell] and [Shimron] Hetmyer come in to bat, he’s bowled well against them. That was the plan of how we wanted to use our legspinners.”
