New Zealand have a big task with 219 runs adrift and Daryl Mitchell batting with the tail

Taijul Islam led the Bangladesh spinners to put them on the verge of beating New Zealand in the Sylhet Test with three more wickets to take and an entire day left for it. New Zealand finished the day on 113 for 7, needing another 219 runs to win in their pursuit of 332, with an unbeaten Daryl Mitchell batting with the tail. It was the accuracy of the spinners on and around the off stump that caused huge trouble for New Zealand’s batters. Taijul picked up four wickets while Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nayeem Hasan took one each.Taijul played the enforcer in Shakib Al Hasan’s absence, removing Kane Williamson twice in the game, while also taking the wickets of Devon Conway, Tom Blundell and Kyle Jamieson in the second innings. Mehidy and Nayeem were the perfect foil, attacking the right-hand batters at the stumps and often using sharp turn to force close catches and lbw shouts. But it was the lone fast bowler Shoriful Islam who brought Bangladesh the early reward.Shoriful had Tom Latham edging his pitched-up delivery that moved away slightly and Nurul Hasan dived low to his left to remove the opener for a duck. Williamson, who had scored his 29th Test hundred in the first innings, was going to be key to New Zealand’s approach on the fourth day.He lasted 24 balls as Taijul beat his inside edge on the forward prod, trapping him lbw for 11. Williamson took the review at the last moment, but he started walking towards the dressing room as soon as he saw the first replay on the big screen. Mehidy got into the act three overs later in his second spell, as Henry Nicholls top-edged a sweep to Nayeem for 2.Taijul got New Zealand into further trouble when Devon Conway jabbed him to short leg off his pad and Shahadat Hossain completed a simple catch. Tom Blundell looked in trouble from the onset and didn’t last too long either, edging the ball behind when he played one towards the leg side and the ball took his outside edge. Nurul Hasan took the catch this time, a tricky one given that the batter had turned his body towards midwicket too.The collapse continued in the 35th over when Nayeem trapped Glenn Philips lbw for 12. The right-handed batter played back to a delivery that turned sharply back to his front leg, and Bangladesh got the wicket through a review. Kyle Jamieson became the third lbw victim when Taijul trapped him in front for 9.Mehidy had earlier helped Bangladesh to a total of 338 with his fifth Test fifty. Although Bangladesh’s day began with their captain Najmul Hossain Shanto getting caught down the leg side when his opposite number Tim Southee removed him in the second over of the day, with Shanto adding just one run to his overnight score of 104. Ish Sodhi trapped Shahadat lbw for 18, before Mehidy survived the first of several chances.Shortly after the first-hour mark, Nicholls dived in from mid-off but one of the replay angles showed that the ball had touched the ground before Nicholls grabbed it. Mitchell dropped Mushfiqur Rahim at slip shortly afterwards too, also off Ajaz Patel, but the bowler removed Mushfiqur next ball when the batter lunged forward, only to be hit on his front pad and fall for 67, a knock that had seven fours.Mitchell later dropped Nurul, again at slip, but the bowler Philips struck in his next over, getting the batter caught and bowled for 10 as Bangladesh inched towards a 300-run lead. They got it just before the lunch break, but Nayeem fell in the second over after the break. Sodhi’s googly did the trick to have him caught at short leg before Taijul gave Nicholls a simple catch at mid-on in the next over. Ajaz added a fourth to his name with Shoriful’s wicket as Bangladesh set up a stiff target.

Cummins hopes for 'a silver bullet' to halt Test cricket's devaluation

Pat Cummins doesn’t believe the decline in the popularity of Test cricket is “as dramatic as it sometimes gets spoken about”, but admits he does get worried about the future of the five-day game at times. His team-mate Usman Khawaja pointed to the lack of pay parity across the cricket world and said international cricket and Test cricket had to be “incentivised” for players that aren’t paid as well.”My hopes are that it’s even stronger than it is now, in ten years’ time or 20 years’ time,” Cummins told reporters ahead of Australia’s third Test against Pakistan in Sydney. “I think in some regards leading to this Test summer, some of the question marks were against Pakistan and West Indies. We’ve had two fantastic Test matches against Pakistan, really well supported, big crowds.”So I don’t think it’s in as dramatic a decline as sometimes it gets spoken about. But I think there is an issue just with the amount of other cricket out there, obviously competition for talent is higher than it’s ever been.”Related

Discussions around the future of Test cricket resurfaced late last week when South Africa announced a patchwork squad for their two-Test series in New Zealand in early February. With many first-choice players engaged in the SA20 league at the time, the uncapped Neil Brand has been named captain. The 14-member squad has seven uncapped players, with 15-Tests-old Duanne Olivier the most experienced of the lot.Cummins hoped that South Africa’s decision to send a second-string squad to New Zealand was just a one-off occurrence.”I grew up absolutely loving Test cricket,” he said. “I think it does go through phases. I know the South African team aren’t sending their strongest side. I’m hoping it’s a phase.”Speaking to , Khawaja said that world cricket needs to wake up to the crisis-in-the-making and address it.”In my personal opinion, unfortunately the issue is that some of the other countries aren’t getting paid as well for playing international cricket,” he said. “That’s just the raw facts. I know this because I’ve talked to players from other nations, I’ve asked them what their average salary is, what their match contracts are for their countries.”It would be just great to see all the boards and where their finances are at. Are they struggling, is the money going into the right places, is it going back to the players. We’ve got to figure out a way for them [other countries] to be incentivised to play international and particularly Test cricket. That requires transparency from all cricket boards around the world to try to figure out how to pay the players the best way they can.”Once you can get on top of that, if you see a massive shortfall for say the Windies – they’re struggling, they’re not bringing in enough money – then world cricket needs to gather round to help. But until you get that clarity and 100% know the money isn’t being misallocated, it is hard to know.”Shan Masood, the Pakistan Test captain, said ahead of the Sydney Test that while he was “not 100% educated” on the subject, he wished for the best XIs taking on the best XIs in the game at all times.”It’s a pity South Africa aren’t being able to send their full strength squad but hopefully somewhere down the line the schedules can be made in a certain way that we see the strongest XIs playing Test cricket,” Masood said at a press interaction.Cummins, Khawaja and Masood were speaking a day after Steve Waugh had accused the ICC and various cricket boards of not caring enough about Test cricket.”Obviously they don’t care,” Waugh told the . “It’s pretty obvious what the problem is. The West Indies aren’t sending their full-strength side [to Australia this summer]. They haven’t picked a full-strength Test team for a couple of years now. […] If the ICC or someone doesn’t step in shortly then Test cricket doesn’t become Test cricket because you’re not testing yourself against the best players.”I understand why players don’t come. They’re not getting paid properly. I don’t understand why ICC or the top countries who are making a lot of money don’t just have a regulation set fee for Test matches which is a premium, so people are incentivised to play Test cricket. Otherwise they just play T10 or T20. The public are the ones who are going to suffer because it’s not the full side playing, so it’s not Test cricket.”

While T20 is seen as the most popular format with the masses, the Australian grounds still have generous numbers coming in to watch Test cricket. The Boxing Day Test between Australia and Pakistan last week had over 100,000 people watching just the first two days. But that’s not always the case elsewhere in the world, and it has Cummins just a tad worried.”Every summer feels bigger than the last here in Australia, but obviously going overseas, that’s not the case,” Cummins said. “In some regards, I am a little bit worried at times, but at the same time, T20 cricket has never had more supporters and I don’t think there have been more supporters in the world watching cricket.”As a Test cricket lover, I wish everybody was watching Test cricket, but I’ve never seen cricket stronger than what it is at the moment.”Will universal match fees for Test matches do the trick to attract more players to play the longer version of the game? Cummins doesn’t hold a strong view on that but is hoping for a “silver bullet” that could potentially help Test cricket regain its popularity.”Ideally we find a way to make it work where we’ve got 15 or 20 Test-playing nations who are all really strong,” Cummins said. “I understand there are lots of different challenges, so I feel really privileged that in Australia it’s a priority and it’s really well-supported every time we play. I don’t know what the silver bullet is, but it’d be great if there was one.”

Spectacular Weatherland shines on return to keep Strikers' finals hopes alive

After coming in to replace the injured Chris Lynn he plundered 80 off 32 balls

AAP11-Jan-2024Jake Weatherald has come from the clouds, hitting 80 from 32 balls to keep Adelaide Strikers’ Big Bash League final hopes alive and end the top-four quest of Hobart Hurricanes.Weatherald, in at No. 3 for the injured Chris Lynn, was unbeaten as Strikers chased down 168 with 25 balls to spare and eight wickets in hand.He whacked nine boundaries and five sixes at Blundstone Arena on Thursday night as he reached double figures for the first time in four games this season.Related

Weatherald treated Paddy Dooley with contempt, launching the spinner for three fours and four sixes including a maximum to finish the game. Dooley finished with figures of 0 for 53 from 2.5 overs. The result lifted Strikers from fifth to fourth on the ladder with nine points – one ahead of Melbourne Stars. Hurricanes remain sixth, three points adrift of the top four with one game to play.Weatherald rated the knock as better than his match-winning century in the 2017-18 BBL final – also against the Hurricanes.”It is probably the best I’ve batted,” he told Fox Cricket. “I was sitting there thinking I wasn’t going to play again this year.”I got a call at 12 o’clock at night saying ‘you’re playing’ and I thought … ‘Nothing to lose, may as well go out and swing hard’. It has probably been a couple of years brewing. Hurricanes were slow out of the blocks, struggling to 68 for 2 after 10 overs.

Real Madrid ready to terminate contract of €30m flop with no competitive appearances in five years

Real Madrid are reportedly considering terminating the contract of Reinier Jesus, a €30 million signing from 2020, who has not made a single first-team appearance in five years. With no club currently willing to buy him and no role in the squad, the Brazilian midfielder may be released early to find a new opportunity elsewhere before his deal runs out in 2026.

Reinier yet to debut since €30m move in 2020Real ready to terminate contract if no offers arriveFour failed loans leave Brazilian’s future in doubtFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Reinier joined Real Madrid in January 2020 from Flamengo but has never featured in an official match for the senior team. He has instead gone out on four loan spells – to Borussia Dortmund, Girona, Frosinone and Granada – without making a strong impression. With his contract running until 2026 and no suitors in sight, Madrid are now ready to cut ties altogether, as per Spanish publication AS.

Reinier’s case has also come at a time when the club is restructuring, with new manager Xabi Alonso having brought in several new names and moved on veteran players this summer. With limited squad space and no clear future, keeping Reinier offers no long-term value to Real, as they do not want the midfielder to return to the second team either.

DID YOU KNOW?

Reinier was once seen as one of Brazil’s brightest talents, prompting Madrid to pay €30m for him at just 18. Despite the hype, he never earned the trust of any Real manager and spent most of his time on the fringes. Even Xabi Alonso’s coaching staff sees no role for him and the Spanish coach wants the Brazilian dropped this summer.

Unless a club comes forward with an offer in the coming weeks, Madrid are prepared to terminate Reinier’s deal early. This would allow the 22-year-old to leave on a free and find playing time elsewhere. Both the player and club are hoping to resolve the situation before the transfer window closes.

Amelia Kerr, Shabnim Ismail help Mumbai Indians take down Gujarat Giants

Shabnim Ismail put in a superb display of new-ball bowling in Bengaluru, puncturing the top-order of Gujarat Giants as Mumbai Indians notched up their second win of WPL 2024. She was ably assisted by legspinner Amelia Kerr, who picked up four wickets. The defending champions limited Giants to 126 and were aided by captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s unbeaten 46 to ace the middling chase. They got home with five wickets and 11 balls to spare.

Harmanpreet and WPL run-chases

Harmanpreet and run-chases have been a love story in the WPL. She began this season with a half-century in a chase against Delhi Capitals, much like she had done in the very first match of the inaugural season, also against Giants. She averages over 63 in chases in the brief history of the competition. Which is why Mumbai would have breathed easy even when Nat Sciver-Brunt’s departure had them at 49 for 3.A pristinely timed cover drive got her going against Capitals, and here, she punched Tanuja Kanwar’s left-arm spin through cover-point for four to get going. The target in sight meant she could take her time, which she did even as Sciver-Brunt attacked at the other end. She brought out her paddle sweeps and reverse-sweeps often to manoeuvre the ball around and kept Mumbai well ahead of the asking rate. In the company of Kerr, she almost brought Mumbai within sights.Harmanpreet Kaur goes down to sweep the ball•BCCI

Even after Kerr and Pooja Vastrakar fell in a space of five balls, there was no reason for Mumbai to panic. Harmanpreet ensured it stayed that way, finishing off the match with a six over deep midwicket.

Giants cut down to size

It was a dream start for Mumbai after they opted to bowl. It did not take long once again for Ismail to draw first blood. Ismail, whose international retirement last year left the cricketing world in shock, has been sparkling as a T20 freelancer, and she was no different on Sunday. She set Veda Krishnamurthy, who was on her WPL debut, up with a length ball moving away, before getting one to nip back in sharply from a fullish length. Veda was on the move on the front foot and was pinned in front for a second-ball duck. In her next over, Ismail meted out a similar treatment to Harleen Deol, getting her lbw. Giants lost two wickets as well as both their reviews in the first 16 balls.Phoebe Litchfield – also on WPL debut – brought her reverse sweep along and showcased it against Hayley Matthews. But her stay was short-lived as she edged one to short third off Sciver-Brunt. Harmanpreet constantly shuffled her bowlers around and never let the batters cut loose. D Hemalatha’s one such effort had her hole out to long-on.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Sensing an opportunity to close out the innings early, Ismail was brought on for her last over in the 11th of the innings. And she managed to dislodge the immovable Beth Mooney, who had steadily moved along to 24. At 5 for 58, Giants were well and truly in mush. And it only got worse when Kerr joined the party in the 14th over. She first had Ashleigh Gardner caught at long-on before deceiving Sneh Rana with a wrong’un to bowl her through the gate two balls later. The rescue act of Bryce and KanwarWhen Giants were struggling at 78 for 7 with just over six overs to go, Kathryn Bryce, the only Associate player in WPL 2024, was joined in the middle by Kanwar. The duo managed to find regular fours off the two legspinners, Kerr and SB Keerthana. Bryce also managed to get underneath a tossed-up Matthews ball to tonk it into the deep midwicket stands. The pair helped Giants take 33 in the last four overs, despite the double-wicket final over from Kerr. After the rescue act with the bat was done, Bryce and Kanwar now began in earnest with the ball. The Scotland allrounder struck on her second ball in the competition to have Yastika Bhatia miscue to mid-off in the third over. Brought on as the fourth bowler in the fourth, Kanwar managed to have Matthews hit against her left-arm spin straight into the waiting hands of deep midwicket. In her final over – the 17th – she squared up Vastrakar to knock her over and finished with 2 for 21 off her four overs. When she fired an accurate throw to the wicketkeeper Mooney in the eighth over to catch Sciver-Brunt short, it seemed that Kanwar could inspire Giants to do the unthinkable. However, the experienced Harmanpreet ensured that Mumbai’s head-to-head against Giants read 3-0 in their favour at the end of Sunday.

Confira:
