Jake Fraser-McGurk's 29-ball ton breaks AB de Villiers' List A record

South Australia batter Jake Fraser-McGurk broke AB de Villiers’ record for the fastest century in a List A game, plundering a 29-ball hundred against Tasmania at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide after the visitors had posted the highest total in Australian domestic one-day history of 435 earlier in the day.Opening the batting in South Australia’s run chase, Fraser-McGurk, 21, reached his century in the ninth over of the innings, going past de Villiers’ previous mark of 31 balls which he set against West Indies in an ODI at Johannesburg in 2015. He eventually holed out in the 12th over, finishing with 125 from 38 balls, with 10 fours and 13 sixes.”I went out there with some good intent, had my plans and process, and seemed like everything went my way,” he said. “I’ve made a few 30s playing in twos [2nd XI] and stuff, felt like I’ve been hitting them reasonably well but probably not that well so definitely surprised myself.”Asked if he’d ever played like that before, he joked: “Maybe a video game or something. Definitely not in real life, that’s for sure.”Tasmania captain Jordan Silk, whose own century ended up on the winning side, said: “It’s probably an innings I’ll never see maybe ever again. It was some of the cleanest ball-striking I’ve seen and sometimes you’ve just got to tip your cap to players like that that can do that. Whilst it was frustrating to watch it was also amazing to watch.”Fraser-McGurk only faced one of the first 12 balls of the chase, scoring just a single. But in the third over he unleashed a furious display of ball-striking. He took 32 off Sam Rainbird’s second over of the innings including four sixes and two fours. He raced to 50 off 18 balls to set a new mark for the fastest half-century in Australia’s one-day domestic competition, breaking Glenn Maxwell’s previous mark of 19 balls. He kept going. In the ninth over he smacked three consecutive sixes off Billy Stanlake to three different quadrants of the ground. He then struck a boundary and a single to bring up his century. In the 10th over, he smashed four consecutive fours and a six off left-arm orthodox Paddy Dooley before falling two overs later. It is Fraser-McGurk’s first century at domestic level having only once passed 50 in his previous 13 List A innings, and that came on debut for Victoria in 2019 as a 17-year-old. He has passed 50 just once in 16 first-class innings, which also came on debut in 2019, but has not done so in 24 T20 innings. His spectacular innings had put South Australia on course for a record chase but eventually they fell 37 runs short.

Jurgen Klopp reveals why he may never return to football management as former Liverpool boss makes not 'normal' claim

Jurgen Klopp has cast serious doubt over his return to football management, admitting he no longer craves the high-pressure life of a head coach. The former Liverpool boss, now enjoying a more balanced lifestyle, revealed that his time in the dugout took him "too far away from a normal life" and says he doesn’t miss the game in the way many expected.

Klopp admits coaching took him away from normal lifeEx-Liverpool boss says he doesn’t miss the dugoutMourinho and Hodgson encouraged Klopp to coach againFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Klopp stepped down as Liverpool manager at the end of the 2024–25 season, closing a nine-year chapter filled with success. Since his departure, he’s taken up a role as Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer and even starred in commercials, but in a new interview with Welt, he suggested that his time as a coach could be definitively over, citing the personal cost of management.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite approaches from clubs like Bayern Munich and encouragement from high-profile peers, Klopp seems content with life outside the dugout. While managers like Roy Hodgson and Jose Mourinho view coaching as a lifelong calling, Klopp indicated that his passion never turned into addiction. The lifestyle, he claims, stripped him of the balance and freedom that he now cherishes.

WHAT KLOPP SAID

Speaking to German outlet Welt, Klopp said: “I was in a tunnel, but never with myself. Now I pay more attention to myself. As silly as it sounds, I stopped doing what I always wanted to do. But it took me too far away from normal life – and ultimately, I no longer had a normal life. Whatever normal life is: my car knew three ways – to the stadium, to the training ground, and home.

"Frustratingly, while I had many visitors in Liverpool, I hardly had time for them. In the last four months, I’ve been to two weddings – before that, none in 23 years.”

"But I don’t want that [management] anymore. I have a job now that fulfills me and is also intense. I don’t sleep in the morning and I don’t go to bed later at night, but I can organise my work much better. My wife, for example, is really happy with it because we can plan things much better that we couldn't before.”

"Of course I enjoyed it too. Some days I couldn’t believe my luck. Just look where I came from – and then I made it to Liverpool FC, and it worked out pretty well there. If I were to go back to coaching somewhere, it would all start again. I’m me! I can’t just take over and coach. Then I’d be completely involved everywhere again. And I just don’t see that happening anymore.”

"He (Roy Hodgson) came up to me and asked how I was. In the same breath he said to me: ‘I miss it.’ And I was like: ‘What?’ Roy is 77 years old – and he wants to be a coach again. Unbelievable! When we played against Crystal Palace with Liverpool, I always asked him whether his apartment was damp or why he was standing on the pitch now.”

"But Jose Mourinho also said to me: ‘This is not the end.’ There are those coaches who always want to do that. I loved being a coach, but I was never addicted.”

While Klopp’s name will always be linked with major jobs, including international roles and elite clubs, the German insists he's content with his current off-field role and lifestyle, and any coaching return seems unlikely. For now, fans may have to get used to seeing Klopp more in studios and boardrooms than on the touchline.

Red-hot South Africa look to break 24-year jinx against teetering Pakistan

South Africa’s last win in ODI World Cups against Pakistan came in 1999, but they come into this game strong favourites

Danyal Rasool26-Oct-2023Big Picture – Can Pakistan get back on track? As one campaign unravels, another gathers full steam. It’s a familiar theme for Pakistan and South Africa across much of ICC tournament history. While South Africa have often looked among the most formidable sides in the early stages of these tournaments, Pakistan stutter and stall until they’ve left themselves with no margin for error, and then they roar into life. This fixture, timed to coincide with that point of crossroads in the World Cup group stages, gives that narrative the extra thrust for South Africa to be that little bit warier, and Pakistan slightly more optimistic. But South Africa are looking to make history at this World Cup, while Pakistan are in danger of being consigned to it. The ferocious brilliance of South Africa has combined with clinical effectiveness, lending that side a steel and ruthlessness they have often been accused of lacking. The team might always look a batter light with Marco Jansen in at seven, but with nearly all of the top six in such glistening form, no side bar Netherlands have been able to burrow their way deeper into that line-up until explosive damage has already been done.Related

Relax, Pakistan have got this

How Heinrich Klaasen bosses spin with a destructive quasi-pull

The one (final) upgrade that can take SA's bowling from good to exceptional

Are defending champions England out of the World Cup?

South Africa will still look at their bowling and conclude there’s room for improvement, unusual for a side where not a single bowler has ended up wicketless in any of their five games thus far. Though both the pace battery and the spin attack have had few problems blowing top orders out, getting rid of the lower order has proved troublesome in nearly every game. While the batters have offered enough cover for Temba Bavuma’s side not to overly concern themselves, it was arguably responsible for their only defeat, a freak loss against Netherlands when they were allowed to get to 245 for 8 after losing their seventh wicket at 140.Compared to Pakistan, though, these are cricket’s versions of first-world problems. Pakistan have slightly greater worries than complaints that they only beat the defending champions by 229 rather than the 300 runs that they wanted. After a shaky start to the tournament that still saw them post two wins in two, Pakistan have now lost three games on the bounce, the last one a chastening eight-wicket trouncing at Afghanistan’s hands. For a side that prides itself on the lethality of its pace attack, that department has looked almost historically toothless, with each of Sri Lanka, India, Australia and Afghanistan putting them to the sword. While the batting has, at times, fared better, the top order which formed the core of their run-scoring ballast is now a shell of its former self. Abdullah Shafique has produced some substance to go with his style, but with Fakhar Zaman injured and Babar Azam having lost that almost mechanical trait of relentless accumulation, the middle order has been exposed to a greater degree than it is prepared for. Shadab Khan’s woeful form with the ball has led to questions about his place in the side and messed with the batting order, too, and against Australia it effectively stripped them of an extra batter. Add to that the pressure of every game being a knockout, and history, rather than quality, looks increasingly like the only reason Pakistan might have further hopes of progressing. The PCB itself appears to see the writing on the wall by issuing a bizarre statement urging fans to continue to support the team. Somewhat cynically, it indulged in a little self-preservation of its own, firmly pointing the finger at under-fire captain Babar and chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq for selecting the team. While ignominy possibly awaits Pakistan, South Africa eye glory. The two sides in resplendent green could not look more different from each other at present.Form guidePakistan LLLWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
South Africa WWLWWIn the spotlight – Babar Azam and Marco Jansen Devoid of form – by his high standards – criticised for his captaincy, likely shunned by his own board, Pakistan’s best batter in a generation finds himself at his lowest point. Babar Azam leads a team that looks like it’s entering its death spiral. But at the moment, Pakistan are alive, and in around the same sort of territory they found themselves in when he delivered his most celebrated innings yet: that century against New Zealand in 2019. Against an attack that’s likely to trouble most of his team-mates, Pakistan’s fate is tied almost inevitably to Babar’s batting form. If he can deliver a knock of similar value as the one against New Zealand four years ago, few will be interested in looking further up his hands to see if that armband’s still on.Marco Jansen has been South Africa’s X-factor•AFP/Getty ImagesWhen everyone knows – as they do about Imam-ul-Haq – you’ve got a problem against the short ball, facing 209cm Marco Jansen does not fill you with joy. A cheat code of a cricketer, the ultimate two-in-one player has had a sparkling World Cup, taking two wickets in each of his five games while keeping the economy rate under check. His ability to swing the new ball and get extra bounce at will belie the high pace and consistency of his bowling, and Pakistan are low on confidence with the bat. If all that wasn’t enough, Jansen is among the most lethal lower-order hitters at the death, as his mullering of England will bear witness to.Team news – Bavuma, Fakhar set to returnFakhar Zaman has been passed fit, and if he does play, Imam-ul-Haq is likeliest to make way. Perhaps more importantly, Hasan Ali has been ruled out with fever, likely putting Mohammad Wasim Jnr in contention.Pakistan: (likely) 1 Abdullah Shafique, 2 Imam-ul-Haq/Fakhar Zaman, 3 Babar Azam (capt), 4 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Iftikhar Ahmed, 7 Shadab Khan, 8 Usama Mir, 9 Mohammad Wasim Jnr, 10 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11 Haris RaufSouth Africa’s main conundrum surrounded what to do about captain Temba Bavuma, with Reeza Hendricks doing a stellar job as replacement during his enforced absence. But Bavuma will come back in and lead the side, and South Africa have also opted for extra spin, with Tabraiz Shamsi replacing Gerald Coetzee.South Africa: (likely) 1 Temba Bavuma (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Heinrich Klaasen, 6 David Miller, 7 Marco Jansen, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Tabraiz Shamsi, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Lungi Ngidi/Lizaad WilliamsPitch and conditionsThe pitch will be the same as the one used for the Bangladesh-New Zealand game a fortnight ago, which means it’ll be a bit quicker than the usual Chennai surface. New Zealand seek last semi-final berth; Sri Lanka's train heading towards the Champions Trophy

Big picture: All to play for

And so it comes down to this. After a month of non-stop cricket – 40 matches leading up to this one, to be precise – there’s a very good chance that it will be the weather in Bengaluru which might end up deciding which team takes up not just the last semi-final berth in this World Cup, but also the final Champions Trophy 2025 qualification spot. But before we get ahead of ourselves, let us first take a quick look back at how we got here.If you’re New Zealand, you could be forgiven for scratching your head a little at your present predicament. After four wins from your first four games, and then two scores of 383 and 401 in two of your next four, you surely ought to have nailed down that top-four spot, right? Well, not if that 383 came in an agonisingly close losing chase against Australia, and that 401 preceded some classic Pakistan shenanigans courtesy Fakhar Zaman, who wasn’t even in the starting XI at the beginning of this tournament. But New Zealand’s fate is largely in their own hands. A win against Sri Lanka, and they move to ten points to almost certainly lock that fourth semi-final slot. The only caveat – Pakistan will be playing two days later, knowing precisely what they need to do against England to trump New Zealand’s net run rate (NRR). Afghanistan too could get to ten points, but their NRR is so dire that it’s all but mathematically impossible to leapfrog the sides above them.3:07

SL assistant coach: ‘Captaincy must be a burden on Kusal Mendis’

As for Sri Lanka, an underwhelming tournament, scattered with only sporadic moments of triumph, reached a pointed nadir in their comprehensive defeat to Bangladesh on Monday – a fact conveniently sidelined by the furore surrounding Angelo Mathews’ mildly contentious, not-at-all-polarising dismissal.Related

  • Trent Boult: A World Cup great who isn't having a great World Cup

  • The beautiful desperation of Kane Williamson

  • It's a four-way battle for the last two Champions Trophy spots

The margin of that loss, coupled with England’s win over Netherlands on Wednesday, also left them in ninth place* – below the cut-off point for qualification to the next Champions Trophy – with only NRR keeping them off the bottom. There are various scenarios at play but all four teams – Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh and Netherlands – could still finish level on four points, with run rate the decider.Which brings us to the rain, something that would be considerably more disastrous for New Zealand than their opponents because they need the full two points. Anything less than that and Pakistan, Afghanistan or both could surpass them in the race for the semi-finals.A washout may work in Sri Lanka’s favour but then they’d be waiting on at least two of Bangladesh, England and Netherlands to lose their final match of the World Cup.As for the actual head-to-head between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, it’s been all one-way traffic in recent times. Recent form

In the spotlight: Rachin Ravindra and Kusal Mendis

Rachin Ravindra has 523 runs this World Cup. He hadn’t played a single game of ODI cricket when the year began but he is now the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament. Heading into the World Cup, all of Ravindra’s first eight ODI innings came at either No. 6 or 7. But from the moment he hit a hundred to kick things off last month, he earned himself a place in that New Zealand top order and has never looked back. Of batters to have played as many games as him in the World Cup, only Virat Kohl’s ludicrous average of 108.60 trumps Ravindra’s 74.71. And one last fact, his only ODI innings against Sri Lanka saw him score 49 from 52 balls, in what was his ODI debut.Of all the mid-tournament revelations in all the World Cups. In ordinary circumstances, having been pushed out of semi-final contention, this Sri Lanka side might have been looking forward to the creature comforts of home. Here, however, they still need a win, and more importantly inspiration. Enter Kusal Mendis, the man named captain two games into this tournament, two games in which he was a whirlwind of unadulterated intent. His seven innings prior to taking up the mantle had seen him rack up six scores of fifty or more, including a 77-ball 126 against Pakistan. Since then though his form has fallen of the proverbial cliff; he has averaged 15 at a strike rate of 68.18. Sri Lanka badly need Mendis to rediscover his mojo.

Team news: Ferguson and Jamieson both to play?

For New Zealand, Matt Henry has been ruled out of the World Cup. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s weakness against short-pitched bowling might see the inclusion of one or both of Kyle Jamieson and Lockie Ferguson.New Zealand (probable): 1 Devon Conway, 2 Rachin Ravindra, 3 Kane Williamson (capt.), 4 Daryl Mitchell, 5 Tom Latham (wk), 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 Mark Chapman, 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Ish Sodhi/Kyle Jamieson, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Tim Southee/Lockie FergusonSri Lanka badly need Kusal Mendis to rediscover his mojo•Getty Images

Sri Lanka don’t have any fresh injury concerns and are likely to stick with the same side which lost to Bangladesh.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Pathum Nissanka, 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Kusal Mendis (capt, wk) 4 Sadeera Samarawickrama, 5 Charith Asalanka, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Dhananjaya de Silva, 8 Maheesh Theekshana, 9 Kasun Rajitha, 10 Dushmantha Chameera, 11 Dilshan Madushanka

Pitch and conditions: Runs or rain?

New Zealand as whole might not have fond memories of the Chinnaswamy stadium, but their batters might, having plundered 401 against Pakistan. Sri Lanka too will remember fondly their win against England here. Now if only the rain will keep away.

Stats and trivia: A one-sided contest

  • Rachin Ravindra is currently tied with Sachin Tendulkar for most runs at a World Cup before turning 25. He can go free and clear of an all-time great tomorrow.
  • Dilshan Madushanka is seven wickets away from becoming the all-time highest wicket-taker in a single edition of a World Cup.
  • Sri Lanka have won just three of their last 20 ODIs against New Zealand; they’ve lost seven of their last eight, with one game abandoned.
  • Two of the three games at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in this World Cup have seen the side batting first score above 350, with only England – against Sri Lanka – failing to do so.

Quotes

“We knew the talent was there, but to come out be one of the players of the tournament so far – not only with the bat, but he’s also making really valuable contributions with the ball. Yeah, very, very special player, and great that he’s on our side.”

Juventus are the closing in on Sancho, according to . The claim is that a "basic agreement" with Manchester United has already been reached, to the tune of €25 million (£21.5m; $29m), only marginally less than the obligation to buy clause that Chelsea broke with a penalty fee last month.

Chelsea were prepared to keep Sancho following his loan at Stamford Bridge last season, but the proposed transfer broke down over contract negotiations. That has been a repeated feature of reporting on Sancho's future in recent weeks, but Pedulla suggests a compromise could be reached with Juventus. The Serie A giants started by offering a salary of €5m (£4.3m; $5.9m), plus bonuses. That number has since been raised but there is said to be more back and forth required to reach a final agreement. Crucially, however, it sounds more promising than anything that has come up to now.

Unable to agree a fee with the German club, Arsenal have turned their attentions to Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres – who now looks close to joining the Gunners. With Arsenal, and any other potential suitors, unwilling to match the €100m price tag, Sesko is looking more likely than ever to remain in Germany next season.
