Former Australia keeper Peter Nevill calls time on 13-year professional career

Former Australia Test and T20I wicketkeeper Peter Nevill has announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket after 13 years at the top level.Nevill, 36, played 17 Tests and nine T20Is for Australia but last played international cricket in 2016. Since then, he has completed a distinguished and record-breaking career with New South Wales. He retires having captained the Blues in 43 Shield matches, more than any other player in history, and as one of just four men to have played more than 100 Shield matches for NSW.Nevill played the last of his 101 matches in February against Tasmania, with a shoulder injury ending his season prematurely. He also holds the record for the most catches for his state with 310, and is second on the Blues’ all-time dismissal list behind Phil Emery.Nevill played in two Shield titles and two Marsh Cup titles with New South Wales, leading them to their last Shield triumph in 2019-20 which was won in unusual circumstances.Nevill played 17 Tests for Australia during a transition period in 2015-16. He replaced Brad Haddin for the Lord’s Test on the 2015 Ashes tour when Haddin withdrew for personal reasons and kept his spot when he became available again which effectively ended Haddin’s distinguished international career. He played 17 consecutive matches and kept impressively throughout but averaged just 22.28 with the bat and made only three half-centuries, which belied his first-class batting record given he finished with 5927 runs at 36.81 and 10 first-class centuries. Nevill lost his place to Matthew Wade in the selection purge that followed Australia’s disastrous loss to South Africa in Hobart.Peter Nevill looks out over the SCG after announcing his retirement•Getty Images

His nine T20 internationals included the 2016 T20 World Cup, when he played as a specialist wicketkeeper batting as low as No.10 in one match.”I’d say [I was] someone who got the most out of the ingredients they had,” Nevill said. “I’ve been fortunate to have played for as long as I have. It is hard to condense [my career] into something short and sweet. However, there’s the opportunities I’ve had, the experiences, the people I’ve met, being able to travel the world, the ups and downs. Something that stands out is the very special people I’ve met, and there was no shortage of them at the Blues.”Nevill finishes a proud Blue despite having grown up in Victoria. He played underage state cricket for Victoria but was forced to move when Wade arrived from Tasmania to become Victoria’s wicketkeeper in all formats. Wade ironically had left Tasmania due to the presence of Tim Paine. All three traded places as Australia’s Test wicketkeeper in the period between 2015 and 2017.”What struck me is I was made to feel welcome by the group [in NSW],” Nevill said. “I was also impressed by how well the senior players communicated to the group what it means to play for NSW: the tradition, the history, and the pride people have in wearing the Baggy Blue.”Hopefully, we’ve continued to pass that message down the line, and that the young players understand the honour of what it means to be a Baggy Blue – representing yourself and those who’ve gone before you.”What stands out is the talent. Talent can sometimes be a dirty word, but we now have an incredibly talented bunch of young players. It is now up to them to take the next step and to really understand their games and how they’re going to be successful.”Thankfully, there’s a good group of senior players and coaches who will help them do that. Hopefully, they go on to dominate world cricket.”Nevill will spend time with his family but has expressed an interest in doing some coaching after a brief coaching/playing stint with Melbourne Stars during the recent BBL, although the experience was curtailed by the Covid outbreak that ravaged the tournament. He is also close to completing a Masters degree with a view towards a new career as a financial advisor.

Special forward wants to sign for Rangers and he could be Cantwell 2.0

Glasgow Rangers are building momentum at precisely the right time following a relatively straightforward 3-0 win over Ross County over the weekend.

With a Europa League tie at Ibrox against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday, followed by the League Cup final against Celtic days later, Philippe Clement will be pleased with how his side performed in the Highlands.

These two matches could define the season, yet Clement is already looking ahead to January…

Rangers have Championship star high on their list

It is no secret that the Light Blues need to add another player or two to the squad ahead of the second half of the campaign.

According to Glasgow World, the Gers are believed to be on the hunt for an attacking player this winter, with Leeds United youngster Joe Gelhardt reportedly high on the list of transfer targets.

Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt.

He has failed to impress Daniel Farke this season, slipping down the pecking order and this could see him move away from Elland Road next month.

Further reports from Football Insider suggest he wants to sign for the club with rumours that Rangers are ‘plotting’ their move for the young attacker.

His contract expires in 2027, which suggests Leeds might be looking for a sizeable fee in order to let him depart. Could a loan deal be worked out between the two clubs?

Celtic transfer target Joe Gelhardt in action for Leeds United.

Rangers have enjoyed previous success with regard to signing players from the Championship. Gelhardt could potentially be another Todd Cantwell-type figure at Ibrox.

Todd Cantwell 2.0 for Rangers

Of course, we all know how Cantwell’s spell at the club ended, but for a time, he was an exciting player who looked like he could be a star player for the Ibrox side over the next few years.

The Englishman fell out of favour at Norwich City, leading Michael Beale to sign him in 2023. Six goals and five assists during his first five months indicated that he could turn out to be a fine signing.

Despite registering 15 goal contributions last term, it was clear Clement wasn’t his biggest fan, leading to his sale in the summer to Blackburn Rovers.

Gelhardt could hopefully have a similar sort of impact should he move to Scotland next month. The £14k-per-week starlet burst onto the scene during the 2021/22 season, scoring twice and grabbing two assists in the Premier League for Leeds.

Jamie Carragher lavished praise on the youngster after a goal against Norwich in 2022, saying: “And he’s a special, special talent. He’ll be remembered now for this big goal, but I can assure you, he is a lad we will be talking about a lot in a few years’ time, he really is.”

Unfortunately, he hasn’t quite lived up to his potential. Since his maiden campaign, Gelhardt has netted just four goals, with three coming in the Championship during a loan spell with Sunderland.

Perhaps a change of scenery could do him the world of good? Cantwell shone after moving to Ibrox and if the club can even secure a short-term deal for the 22-year-old, he could be an ideal signing.

Shami-led Titans bowling attack thwarts Russell-powered Knight Riders

Titans climb to the top of the table after Hardik Pandya becomes first captain to bat first after winning the toss

Sreshth Shah23-Apr-20224:38

Is Hardik good enough to bat at No. 3 for India?

For 34 games, no captain dared. But on Saturday afternoon, Hardik Pandya opted to bat first under sunny skies against Kolkata Knight Riders, and though it was rocky for large parts in a seesaw affair, Gujarat Titans got the two points they needed and got back their spot at the summit of the IPL 2022 points table. After putting up 156, which seemed around 20 too few at the halfway stage, Titans needed early Knight Riders wickets. Mohammed Shami, Yash Dayal and Lockie Ferguson picked off four in 6.1 overs, and that ensured Titans got home to an eight-run win despite a late 25-ball 48 from Andre Russell.Russell’s six sixes had dragged Knight Riders to a scenario where they needed 18 off the final over with the allrounder on strike to Alzarri Joseph. When he hit a six off the first ball, a Knight Riders win was a realistic possibility. But a stunning Ferguson catch at the deep square-leg boundary off a Joseph bouncer Russell couldn’t connect well with sent him back and completely deflated the Knight Riders challenge.Southee, Hardik impress under the sun
Among Knight Riders’ three changes for the game was Tim Southee in place of the expensive Pat Cummins. He struck with his first ball when a loosener down the leg side was edged behind by Shubman Gill in the second over. Wriddhiman Saha struggled to find fluency, and Hardik walked in at No. 3, the highest position he has ever batted at for Titans.Hardik led the charge from one end in half-century stands with Saha and No. 4 David Miller, and reached his half-century in 36 balls – completing a hat-trick of fifties in the process – and looked set to change gears for a big flourish at the death. But he fell in the 18th over.It was Southee in his return spell who dismissed Hardik, bowling an offcutter that Hardik pulled to the boundary rider Rinku Singh. Not long after, Rashid Khan was caught trying to pull Southee too, and the quick finished with 3 for 24.2:09

Russell’s four-wicket over
Even though Varun Chakravarthy returned better figures (none for 26 in three overs) than he had in previous games, Shreyas Iyer did not go to him for his fourth over. Instead, with the 20th to be bowled and Titans at 151 for 5, Shreyas turned to Russell. And Russell proceeded to take the wickets of Abhinav Manohar, Ferguson and Rahul Tewatia – all caught by Rinku on the longer square boundary to the right-handers’ leg side – and ended the innings with a diving caught-and-bowled dismissal off Dayal to finish with a four-for in just six balls. His over not only ensured a tame finish for Titans, but the momentum, too, was with Knight Riders.Titans pacers in complete control
It was the fourth opening pair for Knight Riders in IPL 2022, with Sam Billings – who replaced Aaron Finch [out with a niggle] – opening with Sunil Narine. But both openers were dismissed by Shami in his new-ball burst.Billings lasted just four balls, as Shami’s bouncer had him slicing a catch to Saha in the first over of the chase. Narine was then discomfited by a barrage of short-pitched deliveries, and when Shami offered him a length ball, Narine could only whip the ball to the fielder at short fine-leg.The score of 10 for 2 would soon become 16 for 3 when Ferguson’s around-the-wicket angle had Nitish Rana caught behind, and Knight Riders were looking at a massive defeat when Shreyas Iyer was the fourth man gone – caught behind again, this time off Dayal’s left-arm angle – with the scoreboard reading 34 four 4.Mohammed Shami gave Titans a great start with the ball by removing the Knight Riders openers•BCCIRinku and Russell push back
Venkatesh Iyer walked in at No. 6 and in Rinku’s company, they started to build a partnership. Rashid’s first spell was seen off carefully, and Rinku found the occasional boundary to move to 35 with four fours and a six. With eight overs to go, Knight Riders needed 77, but Dayal had Rinku caught behind in his return spell, quite against the run of play. That brought Russell in at No. 7, and he started off by ending Dayal’s over with back-to-back sixes. At the end of the over, the Knight Riders dugout was spotted instructing Venkatesh to hang around with Russell, but he failed to do the job, slogging out to deep midwicket trying to play Rashid against the turn. Next over, Rashid picked off Shivam Mavi, and finished with 2 for 22.With 45 needed off four overs, Titans had four seamers with one over each in hand. Hardik went for experience first, giving the 16th to Shami and the 17th to Ferguson, which went for a combined 16 runs. The 19th from Dayal went for 11, and the first ball of the 20th from Joseph did go for a six, but Russell’s dismissal next ball ensured that Hardik’s decision at the toss gave them the result they wanted.

Manager approves "surprise" exit for star as West Ham eye move to sign him

West Ham United have a real chance to sign one of their transfer targets in January, with his manager now green-lighting a potential “surprise” exit for the player.

West Ham seal 2-0 Premier League win over Newcastle United

Under-fire boss Julen Lopetegui has been forced to deal with consistent reports surrounding his possible dismissal as manager, following a lacklustre start to the Premier League campaign in east London.

One West Ham star put in his best performance of the season as the Irons defeated Newcastle.

The 58-year-old’s style of play and general approach to important games has been under the microscope this season, with some reports even claiming that “several” senior West Ham stars aren’t behind Lopetegui.

However, a 2-0 win over Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Monday has done wonders to ease the pressure on Lopetegui, at least for now, with goals from Tomas Soucek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka causing a real upset on Tyneside.

“I am happy for the three points and am very happy against a good team like Newcastle, who have good players and a fantastic coach,” said Lopetegui on West Ham’s win over Newcastle.

“I think today was a tough match and we were able to compete as a team. I think we deserved to win. Today they had many moments in the first half, but I think the second half we deserved to win, and we are happy because you have to do these kind of matches against this type of team if you want to overcome them.”

It is worth noting that West Ham have been tipped to attack the January transfer market in search of reinforcements, which could help them over the second half of this season.

Okan Buruk green-lights Galatasaray exit for West Ham target Victor Nelsson

As relayed by Turkish news outlet A Spor, Süper Lig champions Galatasaray are ready to green-light a “surprise” exit for Denmark international defender Victor Nelsson.

Their manager, Okan Buruk, has personally approved the 26-year-old’s transfer – coming after claims from Turkey that West Ham are eyeing a move to sign Nelsson at the turn of the year (Takvim).

A Spor claim that Nelsson, whose contract expires in 2026, could leave for as little as £8 million – which would be quite a bargain considering Turkish media have branded the defender a “star” player in Buruk’s side.

Aston Villa interested in signing £30m player with same agent as Barkley

Aston Villa and NSWE are interested in signing a “quality” £30 million player with the same agent as Ross Barkley, according to a new report.

Aston Villa transfer news

Villa boss Unai Emery will have his eyes on January as it is an opportunity for him to once again strengthen his team ahead of the second half of the season. The Midlands side still have plenty to play for in the Premier League and will also hope they will be playing Champions League knockout football come the end of January.

While incomings may be the priority, Villa and NSWE could have a headache on their hands, as Napoli are interested in signing Jhon Duran. The Italian side want to bring in a player who can be a “sidekick” to current frontman Romelu Lukaku, and Duran is the player they have their eyes on. Villa chiefs are not looking to sell the Colombia international, but an offer between £28-33 million could test their resolve, as talks with intermediaries have already begun.

Aston Villa now open contract talks with 21 y/o loan star Filip Marschall

Unai Emery is keen to tie down a promising Aston Villa player.

ByBrett Worthington Dec 18, 2024

On a positive note for the Midlands side, they have opened talks with young goalkeeper Filip Marschall over a new contract. The 21-year-old has been impressing this season while on loan at Crewe Alexandra, and given that he is highly rated at Villa Park, they are keen to secure his long-term future. Marschall is under contract until 2027, but he could soon find himself in the first team picture.

Aston Villa now interested in signing “quality” £30m player

As well as looking to tie Marschall down to a new contract, Aston Villa are interested in signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Chelsea, according to Caught Offside. The midfielder only joined the Blues in the summer transfer window, but it is a move that has yet to get going.

Chelsea's KiernanDewsbury-Hallin action with Southampton's Kamaldeen Sulemana

Dewsbury-Hall, who has been dubbed “quality” by Graeme Bailey, was a key player under Enzo Maresca last season at Leicester City. The midfielder was a key part of their promotion, so it wasn’t a surprise that the Italian took him to Stamford Bridge, but what is a surprise is that the midfielder has hardly featured.

The 26-year-old has played 14 games across all competitions this season, but only five have come in the league, and all have come from the bench. Most of Dewsbury-Hall’s minutes have come in the UEFA Conference League, where he has been a regular all season. His time at Chelsea appears to be coming to an end, as this report states that the Blues are open to offers for Dewsbury-Hall and are keen to recoup the £30 million they paid in the summer.

Aston Villa are among the number of Premier League teams looking to sign the midfielder in January. They face competition from the likes of Manchester United, Leicester City, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, and Rangers. What may give Villa the edge in the race is that Dewsbury-Hall’s agent, Wasserman, is also the same agent for Barkley, who joined Villa in the summer.

Arsenal chiefs "impressed" by £44m Premier League forward ahead of January

Arsenal are real fans of a versatile Premier League forward ahead of the looming January transfer window, and the chances of Mikel Arteta signing him next month have been shared by a credible source.

Arsenal's potential transfer plans for January

The north Londoners appear to have two main items which could be on the agenda for January – the acquisition of a new striker and signing cover for Bukayo Saka.

Agents tell Arsenal that Bayern Munich star is "seriously considering" move

Arteta could get him in 2025.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 27, 2024

Saka, who was forced to leave the pitch on 24 minutes in Arsenal’s 5-1 win against Crystal Palace, suffered a hamstring problem against Oliver Glasner’s side, and it is now expected that he’ll be out for many weeks, as confirmed by Arteta in a recent press conference.

Summer signing Raheem Sterling has a knee injury which will keep him sidelined for weeks as well, leaving Arteta with precious few Saka alternatives on the right-wing, as he’s forced to get creative with his current options.

Some reports have suggested that Saka could even be out until March, which would be quite a blow, and it would surely push Arsenal into considering the possibility of securing another wide man when the window reopens on January 1.

The consensus is that Arteta is indeed thinking of signing another winger in the winter, and it is believed that “positive” Arsenal contacts are ongoing with Dani Olmo’s representatives, as the Barcelona forward may well have to pack his bags next month due to the Camp Nou side’s financial problems and registration issues (Sky Sports).

Reliable media sources, like Standard Sport, have also shared news that Arsenal could be offered PSG forward Randal Kolo Muani on loan, alongside a host of other sides.

The France international was tipped to take Kylian Mbappe’s mantle following his departure to Real Madrid, but things haven’t quite worked out that way, as the possibility of his mid-season exit begins to gain serious traction in the press.

Arsenal signing a fresh wide-attacking option appears to be a very likely scenario as things stand, and to a lesser extent, the prospect of a world-class centre-forward joining the north Londoners in January hasn’t been entirely ruled out.

Arsenal "impressed" by Wolves forward Matheus Cunha ahead of January

That is according to The Athletic, who write that Arsenal are open to improving their number nine options at the turn of the year, but are also wary of paying over the odds.

The credible news outlet also points out that Wolves forward Matheus Cunha is on their agenda, and the Gunners are said to be real admirers of his. Cunha – who’s featured as an attacking-midfielder, centre-forward, second-striker and a winger – is highly versatile and could plug multiple gaps in Arteta’s squad at once.

Matheus Cunha

Arsenal chiefs are “impressed” by Cunha ahead of January, but they’ll face a big roadblock in the form of Wolves, who are unlikely to entertain selling their star Brazilian in the midst of a looming relegation battle.

That being said, Arteta would have a golden chance to sign the £44 million ace if Wolves do end up going down.

2025 NWSL season: Athletes who are leading the charge, with impact on and off of the field

INDIVISA looks at 14 athletes that are leading the way in the 2025 NWSL season

The 2025 NWSL season is here, and with it some key players looking to make major contributions for their squads, both on and off the field. There is a palpable momentum across all of women's sports, with female athletes being celebrated simply as athletes – no qualifiers, no limits.

INDIVISA looks at 14 athletes – all of which were part of Nike's 2025 NWSL kit release – that are leading the charge.

Getty ImagesAlly Watt: Orlando Pride

Ally Watt already has one goal in the 2025 NWSL season, coming in a 6-0 onslaught the Orlando Pride brought on Chicago in the season opener. She started, building off of a season in which she came on strong down the stretch and finished with three goals and one assist.

With each season in the NWSL, Watt is improving her play, and she provided three postseason assists en route to the Pride winning the NWSL championship in 2024. With her speed and defensive work rate, Watt provides value on the wing and as a backup to Barbra Banda at striker.

If Orlando wants to look to repeat this season what they did last year, Watt will need to continue her steady improvements and truly establish herself as one of the team’s best players.

“To score more goals, just have the confidence in the box,” Watt told INDIVISA of what she’s done in the offseason to increase her output. “And just be hungry. I think that’s what we’ve as the Pride have been, is putting in our minds we’re always going to stay hungry. So I need to have that mindset to be a hunter in the box.”

AdvertisementImagn ImagesRacheal Kundananji: Bay FC

Commanding one of the highest-paid transfer fees ever, Racheal Kundananji is one of Bay FC’s top players alongside Asisat Oshoala, with the duo leading the front line. With her four assists and five goals, Kundananji led Bay last year.

But five goals on 81 shots is a low percentage, and Kundananji wants to be more efficient with her finishing this year.

"I feel like I missed a lot of chances. This year, I won't promise anything, but just watch out,” the forward told ESPN.

After making the playoffs in their first NWSL season, Bay FC will look to continue to contend in the postseason. Kundananji will be a key player. She finished 2024 in fine form, scoring twice and adding two assists in her team’s final three regular season games en route to the playoffs. Look for that only to build in her second NWSL season.

Getty ImagesAlly Schlegel: Chicago Stars

With Mallory Swanson unavailable to start the season, Ally Schlegel will be a key player for Chicago this season. Last year she had six non-penalty goals, tying Swanson for the most on the Stars, and her 13 chances were good for second-most.

Her 0.49 goals per 90, meanwhile, was good for third on the team. She excels in clearing the ball and had 3.67 aerials won per 90 last season, making her particularly useful in the midfield, and her being a threat in the attack helps open up options for Chicago’s front line.

In her third NWSL season, Schlegel will take on an even bigger role. She totaled just 19 shots last season, including eight shots on target. Scoring seven goals on those shots made her one of the team’s most efficient players. She also completed 261 of 387 passes, right up there with Swanson for percentage.

Getty Images SportMichelle Alozie: Houston Dash

Michelle Alozie is a player who can do it all, on and off the field. She made headlines in recent years for spending her time researching pediatric cancer when not on a soccer pitch. But when she is playing, she’s one of Houston’s more dynamic stars.

Alozie excels at carrying the ball forward, having completed 67.9 percent of her passes last year, and her defensive abilities as a forward and defender make her one of the team’s better players when it comes to interceptions and recovering the ball.

Her versatility will allow her to open up gameplay more for Houston in 2025, which will be a year of growth after the team finished last in 2024.

Reliable news outlet The Athletic is reporting that a 21-year-old is now actively looking to leave Chelsea when the January transfer window opens.

Maresca candidly admitted in a press conference earlier this season that left-back Ben Chilwell – who’s played just 45 minutes in all competitions this season – was meant to depart in the summer window.

“Hopefully we can give him some minutes tomorrow,” said Maresca on Chilwell before Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Barrow in the Carabao Cup.

“The idea for him was to leave. In the moment that he’s here, he’s one of the squad, he’s training. He will be in the squad tomorrow, and hopefully we can give him some minutes.”

According to respected Blues reporter Simon Phillips, Chelsea have spoken to numerous clubs over Chilwell’s transfer in the last few weeks, with sides in England, Italy and Spain all taking a keen interest in the £200,000-per-week defender.

Chelsea are also prepared to sell Carney Chukwuemeka in January, amid rumoured interest from the likes of Barcelona and Milan, but Maresca has confirmed that forward Christopher Nkunku won’t be going anywhere, following reports linking the France international with a mid-season exit.

Chelsea have an abundance of star wingers and attacking midfielders in their squad, leading to uncertainty surrounding the future of Mykhailo Mudryk, despite the Ukraine international’s excellent Conference League performances lately.

“I hear they’re keen to move him on in January,” said well-connected former Premier League scout Mick Brown to Football Insider this week.

“I think they’ve got the makings of a very good team at Chelsea, but he isn’t likely to be a part of that. There isn’t space for him in the team at the moment and I don’t think Maresca has been particularly impressed by him so far.

“But I don’t think they’re likely to make a profit on him or even get their money back, let’s put it that way.”

Harvey Vale looking to leave Chelsea in January

Now, The Athletic has provided another bit of exit news out of the club, as the outlet writes that 21-year-old attacking-midfielder Harvey Vale is looking to leave Chelsea in January.

The Cobham academy graduate, who spent last season on loan at Bristol Rovers, has captained Chelsea’s Under-21s this season and put in an array of top performances at that level – but this is the extent of his action at the club recently.

Making five total senior appearances, Vale’s contract expires next summer, and it is believed the Englishman is seeking new pastures as Vale looks to kickstart his professional career.

The wealth of talent ahead of him in Maresca’s pecking order means that the best next move for him is to find a new club, and this could apparently be as soon as the next transfer window, despite the fact he’s able to leave for free later in 2025.
