Emery already sold Aston Villa’s answer to Conceicao in "electric" talent

Aston Villa were incredibly unlucky not to have their first win in seven games on Wednesday night against Juventus. A late goal from Morgan Rogers was ruled out after it was deemed Diego Carlos fouled goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, much to the anger of 42,000 fans inside Villa Park.

As it happened, the game finished 0-0. Neither side really had a substantial chance to win the game until Rogers’ disallowed finish. As per Sofascore, Villa had an expected goals total of 1.22xG, and Juve’s was even worse, standing at 0.39xG.

However, there were some standout players on both sides, with Francisco Conceicao one of the people who performed well for the visitors.

Conceicao’s stats vs. Villa

It was an incredibly impressive showing from Portugal international Conceicao. He terrorised the Villans with his raw pace and was a nightmare for Lucas Digne, the fullback directly defending him.

The young winger, who scored at Euro 2024, has had a really standout campaign so far. He initially moved to Turin on loan from FC Porto but will join permanently in the summer for £28.3m.

He has scored twice and has five assists to his name in 12 games in all competitions for the Old Lady so far.

Against Unai Emery’s side on Wednesday, the dynamic winger completed an impressive nine out of 13 dribbles, showing his direct nature and confidence on the ball. He also worked hard out of possession, winning 13 out of 18 ground duels.

His performance clearly left a lasting impression on the Villans supporters, having also come agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock, only to be denied a stunning stop from Emi Martinez.

Frustratingly for Villa, they had a player of that profile but sold him in the most recent summer transfer window.

Aston Villa’s answer to Conceicao

The player in question here is French winger Moussa Diaby. He spent just one season at Villa Park, signing in 2023 from German outfit Bayer Leverkusen for a reported £51.9m. However, he departed almost exactly 12 months later, moving to Saudi Arabia to join Al-Ittihad for a fee in the region of £50m.

Aston Villa winger Moussa Diaby.

Although his time at Villa Park was short, he left a lasting impression on the club. Diaby played 54 games for the club, finding the back of the net ten times and grabbing nine assists, too. That included 14 goals and assists in 38 Premier League games.

Indeed, Diaby is everything the Villa fans now wish they had in the squad after watching a fellow left-footer, Conceicao, at Villa Park. He is as quick as they come, and according to Speeds Database, has clocked in at speeds as high as 36.1km/h, beaten by just eight current players.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Combine this pace with the direct nature of Diaby’s game, and you have a lethal winger. Thus, it might be surprising that the Villans were happy to sell the left-footed star last summer, given they have no other profile like his in the squad.

In recent weeks, Emery’s side have not been at their best, and the Frenchman could have been a real point of difference. The wingers are struggling of late; Leon Bailey has three assists and no goals to his name, and Jaden Philogene is yet to register a goal contribution at all.

The Villans could have certainly done with their “electric” former winger, as football statistician Statman Dave described him.

After watching Conceisao’s direct nature and sheer pace when driving with the ball, it may well have made Emery wish he had kept hold of the winger, who could have been a huge part of their 2024/25 campaign and helped them out an end to of this winless run.

Newcastle gifted chance to land £62m forward on loan in January window

Newcastle United have been handed the chance to a Chelsea player on-loan after the New Year, according to reports.

Newcastle halt high-flying Reds

Newcastle put in a stellar performance to deny Liverpool a fifth consecutive win in the Premier League on Wednesday night, holding Arne Slot’s high-flying team to a 3-3 draw at St. James’ Park in what was one of the games of the season so far.

Alexander Isak opened the scoring with an unstoppable drive from distance before Curtis Jones leveled early in the second half. Anthony Gordon restored the host’s lead shortly after, but a brace from Mohamed Salah looked to have secured yet another three points for the Reds.

With just seconds left on the clock, however, Magpies defender Fabian Schar prodded home a whipped free-kick that Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher had come for but failed to claim. Speaking after the game, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe described his side’s performance as their “best of the season”.

Chelsea flop bound for the Magpies?

Howe also said after the draw that he was proud that his side managed to find the net three times.

“We scored three goals and looked dynamic and energetic,” he said, adding: “Alexander Isak was really good tonight, if we get our players firing we are some team.”

Scoring goals has been a real problem for Newcastle this season. Even despite their three goals against Liverpool, the Magpies have still scored just 17 goals in the top flight this term – the sixth-lowest total in the division. It’s a problem that needs to be fixed if Howe’s side are to fulfill their ambitions of securing European football, and fortunately, they’ve now been given a boost in their pursuit of Chelsea forward Mykhailo Mudryk.

Mykhaylo Mudryk for Chelsea

CaughtOffside report that the Blues are now willing to let the Ukraine international leave the club on loan in January. The publication claims that Newcastle could take advantage and recruit Mudryk to provide competition for Anthony Gordon, whose form has dipped this season, or play one on each flank.

Mudryk, who joined Chelsea in a £62 million move from Shakhtar Donetsk last January, has struggled for Premier League minutes at Stamford Bridge this season due to a combination of poor form and competition for places.

He has, however, shown glimpses of his talent in the Europa Conference League, where he’s scored a goal in each of his last three appearances.

Mudryk’s time at Chelsea could be up if they sign this “great” star.

Having also been linked with a move to Crystal Palace, earlier this season, Blues boss Enzo Maresca insisted the 23-year-old’s importance to his team.

“We want the best for Misha, since day one we’ve tried to help him,” Maresca said at the end of October. “Probably he’s one of the guys that the learning process is more slow compared to the rest.

“But he’s improving. I’m sure that slowly, slowly we’re going to arrive where he will score more goals and be more important for us,” he added.

PIF must finally sell outcast who Howe thinks is “important" for Newcastle

Not much has changed at Newcastle United since last season, with a quiet transfer window under the Saudi PIF notably bringing in Lloyd Kelly, Odysseas Vlachodimos and William Osula, none of whom are regular starters.

Things are shuffling in the right direction but the PIF project is not quite moving apace. Newcastle aren’t at their tactical zenith, and the club’s 2023/24 Player of the Season, Anthony Gordon, hasn’t quite found last season’s level. Yet.

Newcastle's attack not quite thriving

Newcastle shouldered the burden of so many injuries last season, but Gordon proved a constant throughout, with his pace and potency providing Newcastle with a new attacking hero to complement goalscorer Alexander Isak.

The England international’s prolificness is not the only part to decrease this year, with his data across most further metrics pointing toward a regression of sorts – especially since he is seeing roughly the same amount of the ball each match.

Newcastle’s attacking fluency has simply taken a hit, with the Magpies finishing joint-second in the Premier League last season for big chances created (97) but have conjured up just 15 so far this term, placing them joint-15th with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak

Gordon will be aware that he needs to raise his game like Isak has done in recent weeks, with the pairing regarded as Newcastle’s foremost forwards and two of the highest-paid members besides.

However, perhaps the same can’t be said for Kieran Trippier, who is getting on a bit and no longer justifying his large earnings with high-level performances on the field.

Why PIF must axe Kieran Trippier

Trippier is currently playing out the penultimate year of his Magpies contract, and while his experience and leadership are aspects that must be taken into consideration, so too must his exorbitant wage packet.

Kieran Trippier

Harking back to Gordon and Isak, the former’s new contract has lifted his salary to £150k-per-week, behind only Bruno Guimaraes now, while Isak pockets deserved £120k-per-week earnings, the same as Trippier.

Given that Trippier’s future looked to be away from Tyneside this summer, albeit with any potential transfers failing to reach completion, it’s difficult to claim that he should see out his contract until the end of next season, having already lost his place in the first team to Tino Livramento, more robust and youthful.

He still has a staunch fan in manager Eddie Howe, who said back in September that the 34-year-old was still “such an important part” of the club despite his reduced role, but after a summer of stagnancy, Newcastle need to spur themselves onward, into a new chapter.

His qualities still remain, ranking among the top 6% of full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for assists and progressive passes and the top 4% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref. There are suitors out there who would snap him up.

Criticised for some “disastrous” defensive displays for Newcastle last season by journalist Harry de Cosemo, it feels like the time is right for PIF to allow Trippier to move on. Howe’s side, it would seem, already have.

Arsenal struck gold on "monster" whose value has soared 954% under Arteta

After an encouraging start that saw them navigate some particularly intimidating fixtures away to Manchester City and Aston Villa, Arsenal’s season is starting to come apart.

Mikel Arteta’s side are winless in their last four Premier League games and sit in fourth place, four points behind City and nine behind leaders Liverpool.

Overall, the North Londoners just haven’t looked themselves over the last month or so, and unless something drastic changes, their chance of lifting the title come May seems all but over.

However, while the doom and gloom are near enough impossible to ignore, there are still some positives, such as the performances of one of the club’s most important players, someone who’s seen his valuation explode under the management of Arteta.

Arsenal's top performers

So, before we get to the player in question, let’s look at the next best performers for Arsenal this season, by goals and assists, that is.

Coming in at number three is Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli, who is having an odd season so far this year.

The former Ituano gem endured a disappointing campaign last year, in which he could only muster up a tally of eight goals and five assists in 44 games, and while he’s undoubtedly doing better this year, he can still be frustrating.

For example, in his 17 appearances thus far, the 23-year-old has scored three goals and provided three assists, meaning he’s already just about on track to beat his haul from last year.

Yet, at the same time, there have been more than a few moments in games where it feels as if he’s holding onto the ball for too long and constantly making the wrong decision.

Gabriel Martinelli for Arsenal

The North Londoners’ second most productive player so far this season has been Kai Havertz, who has also had a few frustrating moments here and there but has generally performed well enough.

The former Chelsea ace has made 15 appearances so far this season – 14 of which have been as a striker – in which he’s scored seven goals and provided one assist, equating to a reasonable average of a goal involvement every 2.12 games.

However, he cannot hold a candle to Arsenal’s most productive player this season, a player who has seen his valuation reach incredible heights under Arteta.

Arsenal's valuable superstar

So, as you might’ve been able to guess by now, the Arsenal star in question is, of course, Bukayo Saka.

He might not be the flashiest of players or have the most exciting highlight reel.

Yet, when it comes to being an effective attacker, there are few better than him, as evidenced by his impressive haul of four goals and seven assists in 15 appearances, meaning he’s averaging a goal involvement once every 1.36 games this season.

When you consider his performances this season, alongside his outstanding overall record of 62 goals and 60 assists in 241 senior appearances for the Gunners, the explosion in his valuation over the years begins to make a lot more sense.

For example, according to Transfermarkt, the Hale End “monster”, as dubbed by journalist Mark White, was worth just €13m – £11m – around the time Arteta took charge in December 2019, and since then, their valuation of the England international has grown practically exponentially.

Just three years into the Spaniard’s reign, in December 2022, they priced the North Londoners’ sensational poster boy at €100m – £83m – for the first time, and now they consider him to be worth an astonishing €140m – £116m.

That means the era-defining academy graduate has seen his valuation soar an astronomical 954% under the tutelage of Arteta, and while things aren’t looking rosy for the Gunners at the moment, we’d be surprised if that number doesn’t just keep on rising.

Ultimately, there are plenty of incredible players in this Arsenal squad, but none are as crucial to the team or project as Saka, and his current valuation is just a representation of that fact.

The “sizzling” sensation is now worth 16400% more after being sold for just £200k by Arsenal.

USMNT Transfers: Is Bournemouth's Tyler Adams headed to Manchester United – and why have Christian Pulisic’s AC Milan contract talks stalled?

The USMNT Transfer Notebook tracks American player movements, with the latest developments for those in the U.S. national team pool.

With the January transfer window just weeks away, several U.S. men’s national team players are approaching pivotal decisions at a critical moment in the World Cup cycle. As 2026 draws closer, club futures – and, in some cases, minutes – could play a decisive role in shaping Mauricio Pochettino’s plans.

For players on the fringes, the margin is especially thin. Luca de la Torre is one such case. His loan with San Diego FC has ended after the club declined to exercise its purchase option, leaving the midfielder at a crossroads. With his USMNT status far from secure, de la Torre’s next move – whether a return to MLS or another opportunity in Europe – could prove decisive.

Elsewhere, Tyler Adams’ stock continues to rise in England, where his performances for Bournemouth have placed him among the Premier League’s standout defensive midfielders and attracted interest from bigger clubs. Meanwhile, questions persist in Italy, where Christian Pulisic’s contract talks with AC Milan have stalled. A USMNT icon weighs in on what may come next for the American star as the window approaches.

GOAL tracks all of the American player movements in the USMNT Transfer Notebook, a recurring feature covering the latest developments for those in the U.S. national team pool.

AFPWhy hasn't Pulisic signed a new deal yet?

Pulisic is under contract with AC Milan through June 2027, a timeline that has fueled questions about why the American has yet to agree to an extension with the Rossoneri. One rumor has suggested Pulisic is waiting to see whether Milan will clinch a Champions League place before committing his long-term future to the club.

Former USMNT goalkeeper Brad Friedel can relate. Friedel, who spent his career across Europe with clubs including Galatasaray, Liverpool and Tottenham, believes there are limited reasons a player would delay an extension at this stage.

“I think it suggests that he is leaving his options open. When I was at clubs, I always wanted to sign my contracts when I was happy at places," Friedel explained in an interview with GOAL. "I can only go on personal experience, I liked having multiple years on the contract – you never know with injuries around the corner. If I was truly happy at a place, I really enjoyed having two or three years on a contract.

“There are only two reasons for not signing. One, you are not happy with the contract. Two, you are keeping your options open. Maybe he has given a verbal commitment. I would assume that he is keeping his options open. If you are happy somewhere and you are happy with the numbers, you sign the contract.”

When healthy, Pulisic has been among Serie A’s most productive players this season, recording nine goal contributions in nine appearances. He reportedly earns around $6 million annually at Milan and has been linked with interest from Premier League clubs, as well as ongoing speculation about a potential return stateside with MLS.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportIs Adams the perfect fit for the Red Devils?

The rumor began circulating late last week before gathering real momentum over the weekend. Could Tyler Adams truly be headed to Manchester United?

While the Red Devils are no longer the dominant force they once were, they remain one of the most storied and widely followed clubs in world football — and Adams profiles as a natural fit for a side in need of defensive stability. The Bournemouth midfielder ranks in the 86th percentile among midfielders for defensive actions and the 62nd percentile in aerial duels, according to FotMob. Only Chelsea’s Moisés Caicedo has recorded more interceptions in the Premier League this season, underlining why United’s interest makes sense.

The Daily Mail is reporting United are preparing a jaw-dropping $53.4 million (£40 million) bid on the Bournemouth star, and the Telegraph also wrote a column suggesting why the American would be a better fit than some of the other alternatives linked with the club. Adams spoke of his appreciation of Old Trafford in a recent interview.

"I played against Manchester United at Old Trafford during COVID with RB Leipzig. That was the first time I walked into Old Trafford, and I was like, my dream is really to play in the Premier League because this is what it's about right here," he said. "Now being able to go back and play there multiple times and have good results, especially makes it a little bit better. So yeah, I always get excited to play against United."

A move to Old Trafford would be headline-grabbing. Adams would become the first USMNT player to represent Manchester United since Tim Howard’s departure in 2007. Still, questions remain about whether January is the right moment. Adams is in the midst of the strongest club campaign of his career, and leaving the stability he has found at Bournemouth for a club with intense scrutiny and lofty expectations carries obvious risk in a World Cup year.

At the same time, opportunities of this magnitude are rare – particularly for American players – ensuring the situation is one worth watching as the window approaches.

AFPFiorentina eyeing Tessmann

If Fiorentina fail in their pursuit of Köln midfielder Eric Martel, Tanner Tessmann could emerge as an alternative, according to . La Viola are seeking reinforcements in midfield, with both Martel and Tessmann reported to be among their leading targets.

The move would be an intriguing one for Tessmann. Despite enjoying the strongest European season of his career, the American could become expendable at Lyon amid the club’s well-documented financial concerns. Still, questions remain about the logic of a January switch. Lyon are competing for a Champions League place, while Fiorentina have struggled in Serie A this season and remain entangled in a relegation battle.

Financial considerations may play a role, but the risk is clear. Tessmann has already experienced relegation in Italy during his time at Venezia, a scenario he would be keen to avoid repeating. The midfielder is reportedly valued between $11.7 million and $15.2 million, a figure that could rise should interest from additional clubs materialize. It is worth noting that Fiorentina's interest in Tessmann isn't new. They tried to sign him before he decided on Venezia.

ImagnDe la Torre back in MLS?

It wouldn't be far-fetched to say De la Torre was San Diego FC's third-best player last season, shining as a midfield engine behind Hirving Lozano and Anders Dreyer. Yet, in a somewhat surprising move, San Diego let their hometown star head back to Celta Vigo – where he was loaned from – while declining a purchase option. While neither the player nor the club has officially ruled out a return, the fact that the club posted a farewell message on social media suggests his future lies elsewhere. De la Torre had five goals and four assists in his first season in MLS.

Now back with Celta, De la Torre can't make an appearance for the La Liga side until January, when the league registration reopens. Yet, he might not return to Spain at all, as MLS clubs are in the mix for the 27-year-old. According to MLS Transfers, the New York Red Bulls are interested in trading American youth international Daniel Edelman, and it could open the door for the club to sign De la Torre from Celta – a player they believe could strengthen their midfield after a disappointing season. With one of the all-time USMNT midfield greats, Michael Bradley, being hired for the position, the New York/New Jersey area could be a strong landing spot for De la Torre.

Better than Isak: 8/10 Newcastle star just dropped a "monumental" display

Newcastle were victorious over Nottingham Forest taking them to eighth in the Premier League table, sitting on 18 points after 11 games played. The Magpies have won five times, drawn three, and lost three, now just one point from the top four.

Murillo put Forest 1-0 up in the 23rd minute, with the hosts going in at half-time leading Newcastle at the City Ground. But second-half goals from Alexander Isak, Joelinton, and Harvey Barnes secured all three points for the visitors.

Newcastle eventually got what they deserved, having 56% possession, creating two big chances and taking 17 shots, generating 1.56xG, and getting their goals in the end. T

here were some top individual performances in this game, starting with the first Newcastle goalscorer, Isak.

Alexander Isak's performance vs Forest

The 25-year-old looks back to his best now and his display on Sunday afternoon proved it.

The striker scored one and assisted one in Newcastle’s 3-1 victory over Forest, taking his tally to five goals in 11 appearances, along with two assists, totalling 918 minutes so far this season.

Alongside his goal, Isak took three shots in the game, managed 46 touches, made three key passes, and won two of his three aerial duels, putting in an excellent second-half performance to help guide the Magpies to victory after going behind in the first half.

But despite being a huge positive for Newcastle, especially in the second half of this game, there was another man who stole the headlines, achieving an 8/10 match rating from Shields Gazette.

Joelinton's MOTM performance in numbers

The 28-year-old Brazilian has made 14 appearances already this season, being an ever-present figure in Eddie Howe’s side, scoring two goals across his 1,170 minutes played.

He was signed by the club back in 2019, joining from Hoffenheim for a club-record deal of around £40m. Joining as a striker, and now playing as more of a central midfielder for the Magpies, Joelinton has now played 198 games for the club, scoring 27 goals and providing 15 assists.

But on Sunday, the Brazilian started in a wide midfield position – not overly common for him – and battled hard with what was described as a “monumental” display from a “superstar” player by Toon reporter Andy Sixsmith.

He won six of his ten ground duels, alongside four of his six aerial duels, allowing Newcastle to win the ball back in dangerous areas and launch attacks quickly.

His three tackles, one interception and one clearance all came from playing in a more advanced wide role, showing his ability to do a job wherever he’s put, on both sides of the ball.

The 28-year-old scored the goal to put Newcastle 2-1 up, changing the game heavily in his side’s favour, picking the ball up on the edge of the area and then finding the back of the net in devastating fashion.

Isak was very impressive, but Joelinton deserved his Player of the Match award for his dynamic display, and Newcastle fans will be hoping he can continue to deliver many more performances of that standard.
