Graham Smyth now shares int’l break injury news from Leeds on Manor Solomon

Leeds United have given an injury update on winger Manor Solomon as international duty gets underway, as reported by Graham Smyth.

The second international break of the season is now underway, and it probably comes at the right time for the Whites as they try to get some of their injured players off the treatment table and back onto the pitch.

Latest Leeds United news

Leeds are going to have to deal with being unable to call upon Max Wober, Ethan Ampadu, and Ilia Gruev for the next few weeks and possibly months. But in a positive injury update, Leeds could welcome back Daniel James for their clash against Sheffield United, as revealed by Daniel Farke. The winger has been missing since August but could be set for a return in some capacity against the Blades.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Farke plans to stick with Meslier for that game against Chris Wilder’s men, as his blunder against Sunderland is seen as a “freak issue” and he will not be judged by one mistake. The ‘keeper stopped his side from getting all three points over the weekend, but Farke plans to keep the faith for their next crucial clash.

The January transfer window is still a bit away, but Farke could be about to get a flurry of cash coming his way, as Eintracht Frankfurt are already planning on signing Rasmus Kristensen. The defender is on loan to the Bundesliga side from Leeds, and they plan to use the buy option they have and sign him on a permanent basis.

While Leeds will be pleased to have James back for the Blades game, they will also be pushing to have Solomon, and there has now been an update on his situation.

Graham Smyth shares injury update from Leeds on Manor Solomon

As reported by The Yorkshire Evening’s Graham Smyth, Solomon has remained at Thorp Arch despite appearing to be called up to the Israel squad for the forthcoming games. Israel are set to play France and Italy in this international break, and the winger was named in the squad, appearing in their squad graphics published by the Israel Football Association, but he has remained at Leeds’ training ground.

This is because the winger, who is said to earn a weekly wage of £60,000 while on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, has missed the last four Championship games for Leeds due to a back complaint and a hamstring issue.

Solomon’s decision to remain at Thorp Arch is so he can continue his rehabilitation, as he would like to be back fit and available for the Yorkshire side as soon as possible. The 25-year-old was at the training ground on Tuesday morning for treatment, and the hope from Farke is that he can welcome back the winger after the international break, along with James.

After enduring an injury-ravaged spell in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal, ex-Barcelona forward Neymar saw his contract in the Middle East torn up. Chelsea now obsessed with 22 y/o La Liga talent with just 17 appearances

Chelsea are ready to continue their impressive gamble on youth with another unexposed talent, who has reportedly left the Blues chiefs “obsessed” in his limited game time thus far.

Chelsea continue to sign youth talents

Since the arrival of Todd Boehly in 2022, Chelsea have changed their transfer focus to pluck future gems out of other clubs, with Cole Palmer perhaps the biggest success case.

There have been mixed results; for every Palmer there has been a David Fofana, and for every Nicolas Jackson a Deivid Washington, but the result has been that Enzo Maresca has been handed the youngest squad in the Premier League and appears to have found a way to balance the immense talent present at Stamford Bridge, with two very distinct sides being used for either the Premier League or Europa Conference League.

Plenty more talents are on their way too; Estevao Willian will arrive at the club next summer after Chelsea signed him from Palmeiras in a deal worth up to £52m, while Kendry Paez has also been signed and the pair will be joined by Anel Anselmino, who was signed last summer but has spent this season on loan at Boca Juniors.

It means that Chelsea’s squad overhaul is likely to continue, with the likes of Ben Chilwell, Raheem Sterling and Cesare Casadei potentially moved on permanently after being axed from Maresca’s plans.

One position that hasn’t been properly addressed, however, is the no.1 spot at Stamford Bridge. That is not for the want of trying; the Blues have signed five goalkeepers in two years at a combined cost of £78m, but are yet to find a reliable presence between the posts.

Chelsea "obsessed" with new goalkeeper

That comes as a report in Spain has revealed that Chelsea are one of two London clubs tracking Arsenal shot-stopper Karl Hein.

The Estonian shot-stopper has only made one senior appearance for the Gunners and was sent out on loan last summer, joining Spanish outfit Real Valladolid on loan for the 2024-25 campaign.

And his performances have clearly caught the eye, with the report claiming that Chelsea are obsessed with the 22-year-old, who has just 17 senior appearances to his name.

Arsenal are thought to be willing to let him leave in the future too, with the club having made David Raya their undisputed no.1 and strongly linked with another La Liga goalkeeper to become their backup option, in the form of Joan Garcia from Espanyol.

As a result, the report suggests that the Gunners would be willing to part ways with Hein for between €15m and €20m (£12.5m to £16.5m) when his loan with Valladolid ends, though the Blues could well be dragged into a bidding war amid interest from Tottenham too.

Could Hein finally be the answer to Chelsea’s problems between the posts, or would he add to a rapidly lengthening list of discarded options at Stamford Bridge?

Amla's wisdom gives Miller the belief to change South Africa's World Cup record

Most professional sportspeople consider themselves only as good as their most recent game, but Hashim Amla has taught David Miller to look at that in a slightly different way.”The famous old saying is that you are only as good as your last game, but Hashim always said to me [you’re only as good as] your next game,” Miller said.Essentially, that wisdom gives Miller and South Africa the opportunity to believe there’s always another chance to change their major tournament record, which has seen them go without a trophy since 1998. “It’s about resetting the clock and the mind, and trying to control and really be in the present,” Miller said.Close your eyes and imagine Amla saying those words. You can, right? That’s because if there was one South African who never seemed to carry any baggage, it was Amla.Though he is not part of this squad, Amla has been involved in every South African World Cup squad for the last decade – the 2011, 2015 and 2019 fifty-over tournaments and 2012, 2014 and 2016 T20 World Cups – and his influence looms large over the current crop, especially Miller.”I had the privilege to play with him for many, many years and I suppose what I have learnt from him is to not let failure get you down,” Miller said. “We are striving for consistency in performance and, off the field, trying to be a consistent person as well. That’s what I have really enjoyed about Hashim and his influence, being nice and calm, being a pillar of strength; the silent assassin. He was about getting the job done but more so, being nice and consistent as a person. It has been a good journey with him and I still keep in touch with him and will continue to do that during this World Cup for any advice.”David Miller is the most-capped T20I player for South Africa•Sportsfile via Getty Images

While Amla can’t tell South Africa how to win the tournament, he can offer plenty on the batting front, especially as he is still in good touch himself. He was the sixth-highest run scorer in the County Championship this year and has significant experience in the UAE. Amla played three Tests, eight ODIs and three T20Is here between 2010 and 2013. In those, he has averaged 78.40, 50.00 and 30.50 respectively.Miller was also part of the 2013 ODI squad that played in the UAE, and hopes he can reflect on that and the knowledge he has gained during the last two seasons of the IPL. “In terms of leadership, it’s really nice to be a part of the group and share my experiences,” he said. “I feel like we [some of the senior members of the squad] have got a lot to add off the field – what we’ve learnt in the IPLs, in the previous IPLs and when we played here in Dubai for South Africa against Pakistan. Leadership is something we are taking on more and more, and hopefully, it all plays itself out in results.”For all Miller’s behind-the-scenes work, he knows he also has to put in a big effort with the bat. He is South Africa’s most-capped men’s T20I player, with 90 matches to his name, and has been part of T20 World Cups since 2010. His role has always been that of a big-hitting finisher and he may find himself with an opportunity to contribute more than just the death-over runs in this competition. South Africa’s top-heavy squad is laden with four opening batters, three of whom are likely to play, and though Rassie van der Dussen is pencilled in at No.4, if the start is solid enough, Miller could find himself promoted to take care of the middle overs, which he has identified as crucial.”There have been really good starts [in these conditions] and it’s really important that teams control the middle phase – the middle overs. It’s about extending that and controlling that.”He also downplayed suggestions that South Africa’s batting line-up may be too short, with only six specialist batters in most of their XI and a tail that starts at No. 8. “We’ve got a strong enough batting unit. There might be a game or two where we need our bowlers to pull through with the bat but ultimately you want to be scoring the bulk of your runs from the top six. If we don’t do that, we don’t deserve to win games. There’s a sense of responsibility from the batting side of things.”

Liverpool keeping tabs on "great" £21m star to replace Alexander-Arnold

Amid an excellent start under Arne Slot, Liverpool have reportedly turned their attention towards La Liga as they sound out potential replacements for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is currently set to leave as a free agent next summer.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds couldn’t have asked for a much better start to life under new manager Slot, with just one loss and four goals conceded in eight games in all competitions. The latest instalment of the post-Jurgen Klopp era came this weekend as the Reds scraped past a resolute Wolves side to win 2-1 courtesy of Mohamed Salah’s penalty. It wasn’t their finest performance of the campaign, but Liverpool got the job done once again.

However, despite sitting top of the Premier League, Liverpool aren’t without their problems. As things stand, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are set to become free agents and leave Anfield next summer in three major potential blows to Slot. And whilst none of the trio have outright said they want to depart, the fact that new contracts are yet to be announced should be a cause for concern.

The Reds do at least have a plan in place if Alexander-Arnold leaves next summer. According to CaughtOffside, Michael Edwards is keeping tabs on Juanlu Sanchez, who Sevilla reportedly value at just €25m (£21m) ahead of 2025.

Sevilla defenderJuanlu Sanchez.

Alas, Liverpool aren’t the only side eyeing a move. Reports have also linked Arsenal and West Ham United to sign the 21-year-old Spaniard. Given the Reds’ potential need to find a replacement for Alexander-Arnold, it is a busy race that they could be desperate to win when next summer arrives. Replacing Alexander-Arnold would be a near-impossible task, but Sanchez certainly has plenty of potential.

"Great" Sanchez would have impossible Liverpool task

The argument could be made that a direct replacement for Alexander-Arnold doesn’t exist down the right-hand side, handing Liverpool the ultimate task. Seemingly turning towards Sanchez, it would be a lot to ask the Spaniard to replicate Alexander-Arnold’s stunning passing range, but he could certainly step in and hand the Reds a different element within Slot’s back four.

Sanchez is someone who would have to grow into such a role, given that he’s still just 21, but that should hand Slot an advantage. The Dutchman would be in a position to mould the full-back into the perfect heir to Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool throne.

Praised for his “great” game against Barcelona by Spanish journalist Angel Perez last season, Olympic gold medallist Sanchez should be one to watch. When 2025 arrives, the battle between Premier League sides should be one to take note of, especially if Trent Alexander-Arnold fails to sign a new contract at Liverpool and leaves as a free agent next summer.

The Brazilian had been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal and was reportedly keen on a switch to the Gunners but no agreement was reached between the respective clubs. However, in order to stave off interest of their star man, the club had been discussing a new deal and on Saturday evening, after he scored in Wolves' win against Aston Villa, Fabrizio Romano reported that an agreement had been reached.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It marks yet another blow in the Gunners' search for a new forward as they look to strengthen their options in attack following the injuries to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus. The club had a move for Ollie Watkins angrily rebuffed by Aston Villa and did not want to meet RB Leipzig's asking price for Benjamin Sesko. It has been reported that Mikel Arteta's primary target is Newcastle's Alexander Isak, but prising him away from the Magpies appears impossible in January.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Two years ago, Cunha joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid in a loan deal which included a €40m obligation to buy clause. Since then, the Brazilian has developed into the club's best player and top goalscorer. He has scored 11 goals and registered four assists in 23 Premier League games this season.

Arsenal appear to be running out of options in the transfer market and may have to rely on their existing players for the firepower needed to catch Liverpool. They will be boosted by the performances of 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri but face a tough fixture against last season's champions Manchester City at the Emirates.

Sri Lanka have finalised their 17-member squad for next month’s Women’s ODI World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe, with 16-year-old Vishmi Gunaratne – a surprise inclusion when the squad was first announced earlier this month – retaining her place.Sri Lanka’s squad

Chamari Atapattu (capt) Harshitha Madavi (vice-capt), Inoka Ranaweera, Nilakshi de Silva, Hasini Perera, Sugandika Kumari, Oshadi Ranasinghe, Ama Kanchana, Udeshika Prabodhani, Achini Kulasuriya, Anushka Sanjeewani, Kavisha Dilhari, Tharika Sewwandi, Prasadani Weerakkody, Imesha Dulani, Vishmi Gunaratne, Sachini Nisansala
Standby players: Umesha Thimashini, Kawya Kavindi, Madushika Meththananda, Sathya Sandeepani, Lihini Apsara

Earlier this year Gunaratne, an opening batter and fast bowler, became the youngest centurion in the history of Sri Lanka women’s first-class cricket at just 15 years old. Her rise to the national ranks comes in a year in which Sri Lanka’s women’s team has yet to play an international match – they haven’t competed internationally since the Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia in February-March 2020. They were due to tour Pakistan this month, but that fell through.Gunaratne is one of three teenagers to make the squad, with 19-year-old batter Imesha Dulani and 19-year-old left-arm wristspinner Sachini Nisansala the other two. The uncapped trio had impressed during a residential training camp, inclusive of intra-squad matches, in September, with Dulani even name-checked recently by captain Chamari Athapaththu as a potential option at either three or four in the batting order.Their addition provides a youthful injection to a squad that is otherwise teeming with experience. While in vice-captain Harshitha Madavi, 23, and the highly rated Kavisha Dilhari, 20, Sri Lanka have younger players expected to form the spine of the side in the months and years ahead, 10 of the 17 players named in the squad are either 30 years old or older. With several boasting World Cup experience, Sri Lanka will know every bit of it will likely be needed considering the lack of playing time the team has had in the past year and a half.None more so than that provided by 31-year-old Athapaththu – currently taking part in the WBBL with Perth Scorchers – on whom much of Sri Lanka’s hopes will firmly and understandably be pinned. The qualifier will be held from November 21 to December 5, and will have 10 teams taking part with three making it to the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand from March 4 to April 3, 2022.
