Harmanpreet Kaur: Covid-19 and groin injury hampered England tour preparations

Harmanpreet Kaur has admitted that the longer-than-expected recovery from the groin injury she sustained in March, followed by her contracting Covid-19 later that month, affected her preparations leading up to India’s ongoing tour of England. That, in turn, she said, has played a part in her lean patch with the bat on the tour.Kaur made 4 and 8 in the drawn one-off Test in Bristol last month, and followed up with 1, 19 and 16 in the ODI series that followed.”I’m someone who likes to train every day and work hard every day. Because of Covid and injuries I didn’t get much time to prepare,” Kaur said ahead of the first T20I in Northampton. “This is not an excuse because I’m someone who takes a bit of time on the ground to prepare because at the international level, you cannot just come and get things easily.”Cultivating the mindset and approach you require at this level is not easy. But after five innings [on this tour], I’ve understand how and in what areas I need to improve. In the T20I series you will definitely see a different approach from my side.”Kaur suffered the groin injury during the fifth and final ODI against South Africa on March 17, and missed the three-match T20I series that followed, with Smriti Mandhana leading the side in her absence. There was no official word from the BCCI at the time on the nature or seriousness of Kaur’s injury.”During the game [fifth ODI] I had picked up a groin injury on the left side having already been carrying a grade-four injury in my groin on the right side,” Kaur said when asked about the specifics of the injury and rehab carried out thereafter. “Given ODIs are longer [than T20Is] and after rehab… Again, as I said earlier, because of Covid we are not getting those practice games that we get before international assignments. So directly going and playing [in the main matches] and testing yourself is not the right thing.Related

“But we didn’t have any additional time. And I’m someone who likes to give 200 per cent on the field and chances of injuries can be high sometimes. I know a lot of time my physios and trainers say, ‘Just save yourself and play,’ because I like to give 200 per cent.”Harmanpreet Kaur made 4 and 8 during the one-off Test in Bristol•Getty Images

While her recovery had only begun, Kaur tested positive for Covid-19 on March 29 as a second wave of coronavirus infections swept India.”The [second] groin injury was a grade-two one, but because of Covid the NCA (National Cricket Academy) was also shut at the time, so I was doing my rehab online, through Zoom meetings. And during that time I also got Covid myself, so the injury that would have required 15 days [to recover from] took about two months, and then a month after Covid, as you would know, you don’t feel much strength in your body to go and train.”That phase didn’t allow me to work much on batting or bowling skills. I was just working on myself so that I was physically fit for the team.”Kaur also said the lack of warm-up matches in England kept her from building up batting rhythm.”We didn’t get a single practice game and we struggling even for open nets sessions,” she said. “I usually prefer more open nets and practice games than nets because in regular nets you don’t get much of an idea and every day you’re facing the same bowlers, so you can’t analyse how you should be batting.”These are not excuses, but a reality that I faced. It’s just the matter of a good innings and once you get back that momentum I will definitely carry that ahead.”Before being grounded by injury and Covid, Kaur seemed to be getting into form during the ODIs against South Africa in Lucknow. In India’s first international series in close to a year, she made 40, 36 and 54* before retiring hurt on 30 in the final game. In India’s last assignment before that series, the T20 World Cup in Australia, Kaur had gone through a poor run, managing a top score of just 15 in five innings. Her performance in that tournament was a contrast to her displays in other recent ICC events: her 171 not out in the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup in 2017 and her 103 in the 2018 T20 World Cup opener had been pivotal to India’s strong showings in both tournaments.”I do watch videos of matches where I have performed well, whether it was a long innings or a cameo in a winning cause,” Kaur said, when asked if she uses her own past performances to lift herself up when the runs aren’t flowing. “Such innings you feel like watching several times over because they always motivate you to perform better and they boost your confidence.”But at the back of the mind, as I said earlier, I’m someone who works every day and I have realised this time (during this tour) that you have to figure out ways yourself to get the best out of yourself when you don’t have enough time to prepare. I’m watching those videos of myself and I hope they’ll help me in this T20I series.”

The Dash parted ways with Alonso on October 1, over three months after he last coached the team. The club initially put his non-attendance down to "illness" and then referred to it as a "leave of absence". When unveiled as the new coach of Deportivo La Coruna in November, Alonso told media that there "was not a health issue" but that he could not discuss all the details due to a "confidentiality agreement". He also said his exit and relationship with Houston as "amicable".

Ricky Clarke was in interim charge of the Dash from June 28, but the club has now been able to appoint a permanent successor to Alonso. Fabrice Gautrat is the team's new head coach, it was announced on Friday.

Speaking upon the announcement of his appointment, Gautrat said: "I am incredibly excited and honored to be named the next head coach of the Houston Dash. From the very beginning of the process, there was a clear alignment of vision and values in my conversations with Angela [Hucles Mangano, Houston's president of women's soccer] and club leadership. Their commitment to building a strong culture as the foundation for excellence on and off the field really resonated with me. I look forward to working with the club to build something special that the city of Houston can take great pride in. Together, we will work to make the Dash a consistent contender in the NWSL."

Mangano added: "Throughout our search it was evident that Fabrice would be an excellent fit to lead our team as the next head coach. He has empowered players across the league over the last five years to win trophies and achieve sustained success. His devotion to the game and the development of our players will be critical to the transformation we envision for the Dash. We are thrilled to welcome him to Houston and look forward to what he brings to the organization in the upcoming season and for years to come."

Monchi thinks "special" young talent can become world class at Aston Villa

Aston Villa sporting director Monchi has claimed one Villa Park youngster has all the attributes to become world class in the years to come in news that will be music to the ears of their fans.

Villa building for the future

It was a tough transfer window for Unai Emery's Aston Villa as they battled to comply with the Premier League's financial fair play rules, an issue that forced them to sell Douglas Luiz and also saw them part ways with Moussa Diaby, with the pair fetching close to £100m combined.

However, eight new faces also arrived, with Amadou Onana setting the club back £50m from Everton, a club record signing, while Ian Maatsen also arrived for £37m.

One of the key ideas was to reduce the squad age while also adding depth to Emery's ranks. Speaking after the transfer window, Villa's hierarchy hinted as much when discussing the deal to bring Juventus pair Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea to the club from Turin.

“Samuel and Enzo are young players we trust. Maybe we knew they wouldn’t be ready to play for us immediately, but both are young, talented, sustainable salaries and in the next year they’re going to be good assets", Villa's Damian Vidagany told The Athletic.

And The Athletic added that "among Villa’s chief intentions was to lower the group’s average age" over the summer, something that was undoubtedly achieved, with the average age of new additions just 23.7 years old, well below the squad average of over 26. But now, Monchi has hinted that the best young player in Villa's ranks may well have been there the whole time.

Aston Villa chief backs "special" striker to be world class

That comes as the Aston Villa Sporting Director has backed Jhon Duran to become World Class at Villa Park. The Colombia international was used mostly off the bench by Emery last season, but was dubbed "special" by the Villa boss after helping them to a draw with Liverpool with two late goals.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

"Jhon Duran is a special player. We have to try and help him. He is a good guy, and he needs a team behind him. He is getting our demands better. He was very clinical and today was important for him", Emery explained.

Linked with moves away from Villa Park over the summer, he held talks with West Ham and Chelsea only to ultimately stay in the Midlands. And Monchi has revealed that the club in fact turned down a mammoth forty offers for the 20 year old, who he and Emery believe could become a world class talent.

"There are no fewer than 40 clubs who want Durán”, he explained. “But Emery is very confident with Jhon. He thinks Durán he can become one of the best strikers in the world”.

"He wanted to leave, yes. Just because he wants to play, normal. But now it’s all good, he’s happy”, he added. “If there is a club that really thinks Duran can become one of the top strikers in the world… then that one club is Aston Villa, and that one manager is Unai Emery.”

Villa fans will be hoping that Duran can make the step up this season, and hand Ollie Watkins some well needed rest across the course of what promises to be a long and gruelling campaign.

É total direito do clube.

Shreyas Iyer rejoins Delhi Capitals camp after recovering from shoulder injury

“I am feeling on top of the world, was very difficult to sit out and see my team-mates play,” he said

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Sep-2021Delhi Capitals batter Shreyas Iyer said he was “on top of the world” after recovering from a shoulder injury that forced him to miss the first half of the 2021 IPL season. Iyer had dislocated his shoulder in an ODI against England in Pune on March 23 and had to undergo surgery in the UK.After missing the first half of the IPL in India, Iyer was also ruled out of appearing for Lancashire in the Royal London Cup. He has now joined Capitals in the UAE for the resumption of the IPL season.”I am feeling on top of the world, to be honest,” Iyer said. “This was the thing I was eagerly waiting for. It’s never a bad feeling to be among the team. I came six days prior to the start of the practice sessions for the team, and I had two good games against the UAE team, so I just want to continue with the same momentum.Related

Everton must unleash "standout" signing to ease Branthwaite injury blow

Everton have covered some ground in the Premier League over the past few weeks but must ensure they end this phase of the campaign on a high, facing Newcastle United before the October international break.

Sean Dyche led his team to four successive defeats to start the term, painting Goodison Park in a doleful blue, but there have indeed been signs of progress, and Everton have leapt over the division’s dotted line.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

The Friedkin Group are set to purchase Farhad Moshiri’s majority stake in the club in what could prove to be a watershed moment, but it would be disastrous to start the new era off in the Championship, and thus Dyche has quite the task on his hands after such a dismal opening to the campaign.

Of course, Jarrad Branthwaite’s return to the starting line-up for last weekend’s victory over Crystal Palace bore dividends. The hulking defender could be the difference between preservation and plummeting. He really is that good.

Unfortunately, he’s already headed back to the injury room.

Jarrad Branthwaite is Everton's star man

Branthwaite’s central defensive partner might wear the armband, but he is the focal defensive presence on the pitch, with his athleticism and crunching approach to beating off attackers leading talent scout Jacek Kulig to hail him as an “absolute monster”.

Indeed, after starring for the Toffees throughout the 2023/24 campaign, impressively keeping 13 clean sheets across 35 top-flight appearances and winning 68% of his duels, as per Sofascore, he established himself as one of Europe’s finest up-and-coming centre-backs.

Thankfully, he is still plying his craft in Everton blue, having been at the centre of transfer bids from Manchester United in the summer.

Unfortunately, despite his fine display against the Eagles, The Guardian report that the 6 foot 5 ace is set for another layoff after injuring his thigh in training.

This is a blow, obviously. Everton have yet to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League but impressed with Branthwaite back in the team, and Newcastle will present a stern test indeed on Saturday evening.

The revelation continues that Branthwaite, who missed the opening period of the 2024/25 season due to groin surgery, is now being targetted for a return against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on October 19, though his progress over the next week will be revealing in how quickly he can actually return to action.

Everton won last season’s Goodison Park clash against the Toon 3-0, but Newcastle will be brimming with confidence after keeping Manchester City at bay last week and actually looking to be the more aggressive and expressive of the sides for large portions. They will be further emboldened by the news that Branthwaite will be unavailable.

The limelight chased after two-goal hero Dwight McNeil last weekend, but a word of praise for this 22-year-old titan, please, for he was mighty and menacing in his performance, fast and animated in his defending and crisp in the tackle. The Liverpool Echo’s Chris Beesley awarded him a deserved 8/10 match rating. What a shame that he’s out once again.

Branthwaite’s injury is alarming, it cannot be said otherwise. There was far more grit and authority about Everton’s backline last week, and Dyche will need to put his tactical mind to good use to find a way to combat the quandary.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

It’s back to the medical drawing board for the England international, frustratingly, and to ease the blow, Dyche must ensure that Tim Iroegbunam is welcomed back to the starting line-up to defeat Newcastle on Saturday evening.

Tim Iroegbunam could ease Branthwaite injury blow

Signed from Aston Villa for a reported £9m fee this summer, Iroegbunam has added some youthful avidity and tenacious defending to the Everton squad, much needed after Amadou Onana’s own transfer to Villa Park.

Tim Iroegbunam for Everton

Now, Iroegbunam is not a defender, and thus cannot directly replace Branthwaite for the forthcoming Magpies clash, but his robust and jam-packed match approach might just be the perfect way to overpower Eddie Howe’s outfit.

As per FBref, the 21-year-old ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for tackles, the top 6% for interceptions and the top 10% for successful take-ons per 90, showcasing a ball-winning mastery and a progressive inclination besides.

Iroegbunam started each of Everton’s opening four Premier League matches of the term and was hailed as the “standout” star of the first few games by The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland, having averaged 3.4 tackles, 1.6 interceptions, 6.4 ball recoveries and 6.4 successful duels per game.

This extreme defensive output and athletic work speak loudly about how Iroegbunam could restore the energy and initiative that will be needed to silence the attacking threat of Anthony Gordon and the like.

Abdoulaye Doucoure has dropped deeper for the past few matches to accommodate McNeil at number ten, but it’s perhaps not the best fixture for the 32-year-old to hold down the fort in the centre, not with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes pitted against him.

Branthwaite might not be available, and one of Jake O’Brien or Michael Keane will deputise in his stead, but look up the pitch a bit, and you might just find that Iroegbunam holds the key to success.

Laurie Evans rescues tough chase to put Oval Invincibles second

Laurie Evans rescued a tough chase with 67 not out off 37 balls to put Oval Invincibles second in the table heading into the final round of group games, ensuring they will qualify for the Hundred’s knockout stages if they beat Southern Brave on Monday night.Invincibles slipped to 14 for 3 in pursuit of 147 on a slowish pitch, and were wobbling at 52 for 4 when Evans came in at No. 6 to join Will Jacks. With three genuine tailenders from No. 9-11, there was no margin for error, but he launched a stunning counterattack to relieve the scoring pressure.Jacks’ dismissal, pulling Ravi Bopara straight to long-on, precipitated another stumble. Evans continued to score freely but Alex Blake and Tom Curran were both bowled, and Saqib Mahmood was run out looking for two with six needed off six balls. When Blake Cullen missed his yorker, Evans smoked him for six over long-on, keeping Oval’s perfect home record intact and lifting 19,000 home fans off their seats.Spirit, the Hundred’s runaway horse after losing their first four completed games, had scrambled up to a par score thanks to Eoin Morgan’s 41 – which included five sixes – and a late cameo from Roelof van der Merwe, with Tabraiz Shamsi and Sunil Narine again coming to the fore in the middle phase, as they have throughout Invincibles’ unbeaten home run. While Invincibles are guaranteed a knockout spot if they win their final game, they can still qualify with a defeat if other results go their way.Evans’ epic
Evans has spent the last four years batting almost exclusively in the top three for his various teams around the world, but has been forced into the middle order due to Invincibles’ top-order strength. He was stranded at No. 8 in their last game, much to his frustration, and admitted that his position had changed so many times in the competition that he wasn’t sure of the score when he came in.He signalled his intent early with a perfect one, two, three off van der Merwe – a fierce slap through point off the back foot sandwiched between two lofted sixes over wide long-off – and scored the only boundary of the night off Mason Crane’s bowling with a monstrous slog-sweep over midwicket. His strike rate of 181.81 owed much to his ability to hit the gaps and run hard, as well as his boundary-hitting: he hit seven of the 37 balls he faced for two, playing clips and pushes with soft hands to hit the fielders in the deep.”It’s one of the hardest things to do, particularly when guys at the top of the order haven’t really got going,” Morgan said. “You need to focus on process-driven things in order to take you where you need to be and Laurie did that. He constructed his innings really well, adapted to situations – they ran twos and ran us around the field when they needed to, and then attacked the boundary when it was appropriate. It was as well as I’ve seen him play.”Evans said: “I’ve been up and down the order in this side. My mindset is that if you’re there at the end, you’re going to win the game. I’ve done that throughout my career and I take pride in doing it. I haven’t really got going in the Hundred so it’s nice to put a match-winning knock in – I’m grateful to Moods [Tom Moody]. You work as hard as you can to improve year on year and I’ve experienced a lot of things now, so it’s just nice to produce it in this tournament.”Jacks in a box
Evans was quick to praise Jacks’ innings and without it, the chase would have been over before it had begun. Jason Roy and Narine had holed out to fielders in the deep in the space of three balls from van der Merwe and with Colin Ingram falling cheaply, seemingly suffering some discomfort after being hit on the elbow, Jacks’ 44 was a vital knock. He was crucial in making use of the Powerplay: Invincibles were 14 for 3 with eight balls left of it, but he hit four boundaries in five balls by clipping Brad Wheal off his pads, then cutting and sweeping van der Merwe for three in a row. He also pulled two sixes – one out of the screws, the other fumbled over the rope by an off-balance Joe Cracknell – and offered some support for Evans in a stand of 57; the next-highest score of the innings was Sam Billings’ 9.Morgan’s moment
Morgan was a long-term advocate of a city-based short-form competition in England to rival the Big Bash and IPL and has been vocal in his praise of the Hundred throughout its first season, suggesting 10 days in that it was “already better” than the T20 Blast. But on the pitch, he had struggled to make much of an impact: his first five innings brought 85 runs with a top score of 27, and his Spirit side were eliminated at the earliest possibility opportunity after four consecutive defeats. His own struggles with the bat were an extension of a wider pattern, too: his top score across 14 innings in the Blast, England’s T20Is and the Hundred this summer was 38, and he had only scored at a 140+ strike rate in three of them.”I’ve had a slow start to this competition and it’s been disappointing, to be honest,” he said afterwards. “As a senior player you want to score runs earlier in the tournament and contribute more, and I haven’t done that.”This was a welcome return to form. Billings tried to sneak in five balls of Jacks’ offspin, with him turning the ball away from the left-hander, but Morgan decided to take him on and flay him for four over extra cover, then six over square leg. His best shot was a cross-batted swat down the ground for six off Saqib Mahmood, skipping down the pitch and taking on an 88mph short ball, and he eventually fell for 41 off 20, top-edging a catch while trying to slog-sweep Shamsi for a third consecutive six.
