Man Utd ace left for £15m, now he’s outperforming Rashford & worth £50m

Aside from Chelsea, Manchester United were the busiest of the traditional 'big six' sides in the summer transfer window.

Erik ten Hag welcomed in a number of exciting players, including Manuel Ugarte, Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, while also clearing out the squad of several players deemed not good enough to help the team get back to the top of the game, such as Scott McTominay, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek.

Erik ten Hag

However, while the club made decent money on some of their departures, one of their most prominent sales from last summer is now worth considerably more to their current side and even outperformed Marcus Rashford last season.

Rashford's recent form

In the 2022/23 campaign, very few players in European football, let alone in the Premier League, were more dangerous than Rashford.

For example, in his 56 appearances that season, he scored a whopping 30 goals and provided 11 assists, meaning that he averaged a goal involvement once every 1.36 games. This red-hot form understandably earned him a bumper new £375k-per-week contract, including bonuses.

However, while he was a goalscoring phenom two seasons ago, he took a massive step back last year and could only muster a return of eight goals and six assists in 43 games, or an average of a goal involvement once every 3.07 games, which is an enormous dropoff.

Even worse than that, the 60-capped international only scored seven goals and provided just three assists in 33 Premier League matches, which equates to a substandard average of a goal involvement every 3.3 games.

Unfortunately for the 26-year-old, he hasn't looked much better this year either. In his four games so far, including the Community Shield, he's failed to score or assist a goal.

Overall, things are not looking great for the Manchester-born winger at the moment, and the fact he was outperformed by a former United squad player in the league last season certainly doesn't help.

Anthony Elanga's recent form

The former United ace in question is Swedish international Anthony Elanga, who, after failing to stake a claim in the first team, was sold to Nottingham Forest for just £15m last summer.

Anthony Elanga

Since making the move, the 22-year-old dynamo has shown the three-time European champions exactly what they're missing by becoming one of the most important players in Forest's squad.

For example, in just 39 appearances last season, the "brilliant" winger, as dubbed by former United defender Wes Brown, scored five goals and provided nine assists. This means he produced the same number of goal involvements as Rashford in fewer matches, equating to an average of one every 2.78 games.

However, when we look at just his Premier League performances, things start to look even more impressive, as all 14 of his goal involvements came in his 36 appearances in the competition, meaning he averaged one every 2.57 games in the most demanding league in football.

This outrageous output for a team that was battling relegation for much of the season understandably caught the attention of other clubs. According to a report from Sky Sports News, Newcastle United had a £50m offer rejected on deadline day last week.

Therefore, the Tricky Trees now value their £15m purchase at more than £50m, and based on his performances at the City Ground, who can blame them?

Abid Ali fifty propels Pakistan reply to Zimbabwe's 176

Stumps Zimbabwe may have controlled whether or not to bat after Brendan Taylor called correctly at the toss, but little else was in their control all day. A collapse of the top order left them battling against the tide from the outset, and four wickets apiece for Shaheen Afridi – who reached 50 Test wickets today – and Hasan Ali skittled the hosts out for 176. To hammer home Pakistan’s advantage, their openers, Abid Ali and Imran Butt – both out of form for quite some time – remained unbeaten through the third session, bringing up a century partnership, finishing the opening day of the first Test just 73 runs behind Zimbabwe with all ten wickets still intact. The home side had found themselves outclassed, bullied and overrun in the first session. The absence of Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza, combined with captain Sean Williams being ruled out late yesterday, meant the batting was vulnerable. Those fears were only exacerbated when Hasan struck in his first over to get rid of Kevin Kasuza. There was an element of tragicomedy to that dismissal, with a solid defensive shot trickling back towards the stumps, Kasuza’s bucked kick never really threatening to prevent the ball dislodging the off-stump bail.Afridi at the other end was consistent as ever, suffocating Zimbabwe with unerring accuracy, giving the batters’ techniques regular workings-over. It was inevitable that would bring about a wicket sooner or later, and when Prince Masvaure pushed at one with hard hands, it flew to Butt at second slip. He could have been dismissed off the first ball of the match when a strong appeal for caught behind was turned down by the umpire, but there would be no further chances once Butt grabbed hold of a smart catch.Pakistan handed a debut to offspinner Sajid Khan, but it was his left-arm counterpart Nauman Ali who provided the next breakthrough breaching Tarisai Musakanda’s defences with a ball that went straight on. Zimbabwe’s woes were compounded when Taylor fell to an uncharacteristically irresponsible shot, reaching for a Hasan delivery well wide of off stump to give Faheem Ashraf a gift at third slip. The veteran threw back his head in frustration, clearly feeling his side’s best chances of putting up a respectable first-innings total were behind it.Resistance after lunch might have made him reconsider, with debutant Roy Kaia accumulating a spirited 59-run stand with Milton Shumba for the fifth wicket. It was the only sustained phase of the innings where the batters looked untroubled, and Pakistan slightly bereft of ideas. The partnership continued after lunch in the same vein as it had concluded before, and slowly looked to be digging Zimbabwe out of the pit the top order had left them in.But when Pakistan couldn’t dismiss them, Zimbabwe were kind enough to offer a sacrifice anyway. Shumba set off for a single within the circle there was no need or possibility for, and left himself stranded in the middle of the pitch, with even a dive failing to redeem him. Kaia soldiered on briefly with Regis Chakabva, but a devastatingly effective old-ball spell from Hasan guaranteed that any hopes Zimbabwe harboured of a more substantial revival would be swiftly extinguished. He followed up his two wickets with the new ball by taking another two in the middle, removing top-scorer Kaia two runs shy of a half-century with a pinpoint yorker, and putting paid to Chakabva moments later. After that, it was left to the bowlers to scrape together a total as close to 200 as their abilities and wiles would muster. The tail did provide brief, entertaining resistance, but the carefree approach they took was, by design, short-term, and Afridi joined Hasan’s party, each finishing with four wickets. Afridi’s 50th Test wicket has come in his 16th Test, one quicker than Wasim Akram, with Hasan just three wickets short of the same mark.Donald Tiripano frustrated Pakistan with the reverse sweep for a while, interspersed with some eye-catchingly good conventional shots, ending up as his side’s second-highest scorer. Blessing Muzarabani whacked Shaheen over cow corner en route an entertaining seven-ball 14, and before they were dismissed, the final three wickets added a useful 49 runs.It might have given them a lifeline, but it left the bowlers needing to produce something special on a slow pitch still fairly conducive to batting. The hosts, however, notably lacked the penetration they would need against the attritional abilities of Abid and Butt, each eager for a chance to cement their place at the top of Pakistan’s order. Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava were safely negotiated early on, and with Zimbabwe lacking a quality spinner, batting became easier, and the runs began to flow. Abid brought up his half-century before the day was done, with Butt just seven shy of that mark.Unless something quite special happens overnight, there’s little indication that tide can be stemmed now, with Zimbabwe facing the unwelcome prospect of a huge first-innings deficit to contend with.

David Warner takes 'full responsibility' for 'very slow' knock as Sunrisers Hyderabad sink further

The Sunrisers captain struggled to get going in a 55-ball innings, scoring just 57

Saurabh Somani28-Apr-20212:25

Trevor Bayliss: ‘There’s no reason why we can’t turn it around like last year’

David Warner will not look back very fondly at the match that got him his 50th IPL half-century and his 10,000th T20 run. Warner struggled to 57 off 55 against the Chennai Super Kings, contributing to a sluggish start as the Sunrisers Hyderabad slumped to a seven-wicket defeat to stay at the bottom of the points table in IPL 2021.”I take full responsibility. The way that I batted was obviously very slow,” Warner told host broadcaster Star Sports at the end of the match. “I was hitting a lot of fielders and [was] very, very frustrated… Look I take full responsibility from a batting point of view. I felt [that with] Manish [Pandey] coming back into the team, the way that he batted was exceptional. And obviously Kane [Williamson] and Kedar [Jadhav] towards the back end there, they put some boundaries away and got us to a respectable total. I felt that we were probably just below par from where we were. But yeah look, at the end of the day, I’ll take full responsibility.”It is not that Warner wasn’t to get the ball away, but he never found the combination of timing and placement right. A lot of his forcing shots couldn’t hit the gaps, and those that did hadn’t travelled sweetly enough off the bat and could therefore be cut off. ESPNcricinfo’s control percentage illustrates both points: Warner was not in control of his shots for 20% of his innings which comes down to 11 balls, a high enough figure anyway given the length of his innings. He was in control for 44 balls, but those yielded only 56 runs. Normally, when a batter of Warner’s ability is in control for that many balls, you would expect a higher yield. But against the Super Kings, he couldn’t pierce the gaps even when he timed the ball well. The lack of runs told on Warner, who audibly indulged in self-recrimination and angry, frustrated swings of the bat after yet another ball had not gone where he wanted it to.”I hit probably 15 good shots to fielders, [as] simple as that,” he said. “I can’t do much about it. They’re the ones that make or break your innings I think. In the first six overs, I hit [to] the fielder four or five times. There was one guy on the leg side, I hit it straight to him with a full toss. It gets frustrating as a batsman when you’re out there. But at the end of the day, I took too many balls.”The Sunrisers’ coach Trevor Bayliss acknowledged that Warner was finding it tough but backed his captain to come good at the post-match press conference.Related

CSK canter to target of 172 to move to No. 1 on points table

“Look I think David will be the first to admit he struggled to hit the gaps today,” Bayliss said. “He hit a lot of balls to the field today. Obviously, with David that doesn’t happen a lot. Tonight it did, so yeah that put us a bit behind the eight-ball, but the other guys batted really well in a team effort. Unfortunately, 170 [171] wasn’t quite enough. I thought they bowled pretty well and then obviously batted well.”Warner’s 55-ball 57 was worth only 24 points on ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats. An indication of how low that is, is demonstrated by how much Kane Williamson’s 26* off 10 deliveries was worth, which was nearly double at 44 points.Williamson’s knock, in fact, was worth more than even Pandey’s 61 off 46. Pandey didn’t accelerate enough through the middle overs and at the death. The Sunrisers have top-heavy batting in their playing XI, with Warner, Jonny Bairstow and Williamson expected to do the heavy lifting. Ordinarily, an innings where Warner has faced 55 balls might have yielded 75 to 100 runs for them. But this happened to be one of those days when everything went wrong for Warner. With the team sitting at the bottom of the points table and time to catch up running out, they will need this to be a one-off.

Man Utd rivalling Liverpool to sign "dynamic" replacement for injured Shaw

After getting their Premier League campaign underway with last-gasp success against Fulham, Manchester United have reportedly turned their attention towards another defensive reinforcement for Erik ten Hag.

Man Utd transfer news

It was far from convincing but the Red Devils managed to get over the line nonetheless, with Joshua Zirkzee announcing his arrival in style by scoring a late winner on his Premier League debut. Becoming an instant hero at Old Trafford, Zirkzee is one of four fresh faces to have arrived this summer, joining alongside Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui in a successful transfer window for all involved at Manchester United.

After an unconvincing opening display, however, Manchester United could yet add further reinforcements with their focus seemingly on both a midfielder, which could yet be Manuel Ugarte, and a new left-back to provide backup for the injury-prone Luke Shaw.

The likes of Ferdi Kadioglu were mentioned, but given that the Fenerbahce star is reportedly on his way to Brighton & Hove Albion, the Red Devils have set their sights on an alternative option.

Man Utd now in constant talks with all parties to sign £51m Brazil star

The Red Devils could sign an alternative to Ugarte…

ByTom Cunningham Aug 16, 2024

According to L'equipe, Manchester United now have Adrien Truffert in their sights alongside interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Nottingham Forest.

The Stade Rennais left-back has just returned to club football after winning a silver medal at the Paris Olympics, only denied gold by an excellent Spain side.

Adrien Truffert

Now, with his medal secured, Truffert could be on the move. Just 22 years old, the Frenchman has shown plenty of potential and ticks the box for what Manchester United's new-found transfer policy looks for, as highlighted by Zirkzee and Yoro in particular. With just two weeks left in the window, however, any deal will have to pick up pace fairly quickly for it to get over the line.

"Dynamic" Truffert can compete with Shaw

With those at Old Trafford will have eyes on the future if they signed Truffert this summer, the left-back would be keen to avoid becoming nothing more than a backup option and instead compete for Shaw's starting place. Of course, the more that the England international struggles on the injury front, the more that his starting spot becomes vulnerable, perhaps allowing Truffert to steal in and claim it.

The 22-year-old has earned plenty of praise during his time at Stade Rennais, including from U23 scout Antonio Mango, who described the Frenchman as "such a dynamic full-back".

A player who's equally capable going forward as in defence, as the numbers presented by Mango highlight, Truffert could be quite the coup if Manchester United manage to fend off reported interest from Liverpool to land his signature. The left-back would be their fifth signing of the summer.

Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, typically serves as the venue for Astana FC's home matches. However, due to ongoing renovations at their primary stadium, the game against Chelsea has been relocated 1,200 kilometres south to Almaty. The new location and its sub-zero conditions, ranging between -6 and -11 degrees Celsius, add another layer of difficulty for the Premier League side.

To optimize their travel plans, Chelsea have received special permission from UEFA to conduct their pre-match press conference and training session in Surrey. This adjustment eliminates the need for pre-match events to take place in the host country, allowing Enzo Maresca's team to focus on their preparations before embarking on the arduous journey.

WHAT MARESCA SAID

Maresca has been proactive in managing his squad amid the packed fixture schedule. Following Chelsea's impressive 4-2 win over Tottenham on Sunday, Maresca gave the players a much-needed day off on Monday. The Italian is expected to rotate his squad heavily for Thursday’s game, maintaining his pattern of making significant changes between matches.

"Some of them will be here and some of them will fly with us. More or less, we try to manage in the same way we have done before today," he said.

"We have many young players, 17 players with us, and the rest will be here with us. Eight hours is not a normal time for a game, you know, but we have to go there, we have to play, try our best and thinking also about the next game."

Chelsea’s trip to Almaty will involve an eight-hour direct chartered flight. The route has been carefully planned to avoid airspace over conflict zones, including Russia, Ukraine, and the Middle East. Despite the significant time difference – Kazakhstan being five hours ahead of the UK – the team plans to stick to their home time zone. The match, set for 8:30 p.m. local time, will be treated as a 3:30 p.m. kickoff for the players to minimize disruption to their routines.

A host of big names also left Chelsea for pastures new, including a pretty blockbuster exit to Arsenal for Raheem Sterling, which dominated the headlines on deadline day.

Alongside Sterling, other players to seal a last-gasp move away from Chelsea come in the form of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Romelu Lukaku, Armando Broja and Trevoh Chalobah, with the quartet leaving either on loan or permanently.

Chelsea will be especially overjoyed to get Lukaku's previous £325,000-per-week wages off the books as they seriously trim their salary bill, and the Belgian could be granted a new lease of life under Antonio Conte in Serie A.

The pair worked together at Inter and helped to guide the Nerazzurri to an impressive Scudetto triumph in the 2021/22 season.

David Datro Fofana expected to leave Chelsea after deadline day

As per Romano, another forward in Chelsea ace David Datro Fofana could quit the club after Lukaku and Broja – despite the UK transfer window's closure.

Indeed, it is believed Fofana is expected to leave Chelsea after deadline day, with a host of windows still open. Belgian, Turkish, Dutch and Portuguese clubs remain capable of doing business, for the next 48 hours at least, while the Saudis could also offer the 21-year-old an escape route.

The Ivory Coast international spent the second half of last season on loan at Burnley, scoring four league goals and proving he can cut it at the highest level. Fofana could be a great opportunity for clubs abroad, as he doesn't look too likely to feature much for Maresca this term.
