    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 20-year-old is still relatively new to competitive football, having made just 44 first-team appearances throughout his career. In that time, he has scored six goals, five of which came for Colchester and one of which came for Posh. Given Darren Ferguson's description of the issue, Ihionvien may not be able to walk after his diagnosis.

  • WHAT DARREN FERGUSON SAID

Manager Ferguson confirmed: "Brad has had a scan and it's not good, he's got a freak injury in his leg. They've found another bone has grown, so it's a bit of a strange one.

"He's probably going to have to stay off his feet for a couple of months."

Shortlisted: Liverpool want £38m talent who’d make Mac Allister unplayable

Alongside Fulham, Liverpool are the only Premier League side not to have made a senior signing this summer, understandably stoking the fanbase's ire after falling short in the title race last season and losing quarter-final ties in the FA Cup and Europa League both.

While supporters grumble, Anfield bosses are likely at ease, for they are not reclining in plump executive chairs, twiddling thumbs and kicking up feet. Arne Slot has replaced the legendary Jurgen Klopp in the dugout and is currently hard at work on the training pitch, kicking his first team into gear.

To say 'first team' is probably inapt anyway. Liverpool chiefs stress that signings will be made, but not just yet. Slot is drawing conclusions on Liverpol's extensive squad – and that includes academy members hoping to impress.

A significant portion of the mainstays have yet to even make their introductions following international commitments, so it's understandable that circumspect is the watchword of the window.

Liverpool want new defender

As per a recent report from Caught Offside, Goncalo Inacio is on Liverpool's summer shortlist as FSG weigh up signing a centre-back this summer.

Captain Virgil van Dijk, 33, is entering the final year of his contract, and while he is joined by Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah, the former is prone to inconsistency while 22-year-old Quansah was playing in League One little over a year ago.

Competition for the Sporting CP titan is expected to be fierce this summer, not least because the Portuguese Primeira Liga champions are believed to have slashed their asking price to £38m – some £13m below his €60m (£51m) release clause.

What Goncalo Inacio would bring to Liverpool

One of the most attractive factors regarding an Inacio transfer to Liverpool comes from the fact that he has been scouted extensively. The Reds had a vested interest in the Portugal international one year ago but he opted to pen a new deal with Sporting and continue his development in his homeland.

Liverpool transfer target Goncalo Inacio

This proved to be an auspicious move indeed. Ruben Amorim led Sporting to the top-flight title last term – the club's second in four years – sending the Benfica/Porto monopoly into a spin.

Inacio was one of the centrepieces of the success.

As per FBref, he ranked among the top 15% of centre-backs in the Primeira Liga last season for pass completion, the top 1% for passes attempted and progressive passes, the top 8% for progressive carries and the top 18% for successful take-ons per 90.

Clearly, he's one of the most interesting up-and-coming defenders around, with his technical acumen and natural-born passing ability making an exciting comment of his suitability in Slot's pass-heavy, control-heavier system.

Moreover, he's left-footed, marking him as Van Dijk's perfect long-term successor. He is wholly different in regards to his approach but undoubtedly boasts the kind of talent needed to thrive in the Premier League.

His performance against Georgia at Euro 2024 illustrated that he can perform on the biggest stage, away from Portugal, and if the reports that he's available for a cut-price fee are accurate, he simply has to be signed this summer.

He might even offer the style of play to take Liverpool sensations like Alexis Mac Allister to the next level.

Why he would make Mac Allister unplayable

Mac Allister was brilliant last season, alternating between a deep-lying and freer-roaming midfield deployment and altogether starring as Klopp's outfit chased down honours.

Alexis Mac Allister vs Aston Villa

He bagged the Carabao Cup in his first year in Liverpool but cut a forlorn figure along with his peers as the Reds fell short in their quest for the biggest prizes, though it was little fault of his own.

As Mac Allister and Wataru Endo's partnership bloomed in the middle of the park, he was able to showcase the full scope of his dynamic skillset, with pundit Joe Cole hailing him as a "superstar" who "can play anywhere".

Tenacious, tough-tackling and wonderfully technical, the Argentina international might find himself operating in a deep-lying role with more regularity than he might desire, should Liverpool refrain from paying the big bucks on a shiny new specialist No. 6. Inacio would be crucial in ensuring his success in that regard.

Such is football. Mac Allister's tactical pliability is simply an illustration of his multi-skilled talent. Indeed, he ranked among the top 14% of midfielders in the Premier League last season for passes attempted, the top 13% for progressive passes, the top 18% for shot-creating actions, the top 9% for tackles and the top 3% for clearances per 90. Quite the complete player, ay.

Alexis Mac Allister for Liverpool

And signed for a bargain £35m from Brighton & Hove Albion to spearhead Liverpool's engine room rebuild, he's proved to be a bona fide success on Merseyside.

By placing a progressive, ball-playing defender in Inacio behind him, Mac Allister might just find himself rising to a new level altogether under Slot's management.

£68m release clause: Aston Villa want "superstar" Joao Felix upgrade

Aston Villa have been busy this summer, strengthening across the park after defying the odds to qualify for the Champions League with a top-four Premier League finish last season.

Business is still expected throughout the final fortnight of the window, and while Joao Felix is coveted as the "game-changer" signing for Unai Emery's troops – as per The Telegraph – Chelsea are looking to sign the Atletico Madrid forward.

As such, alternatives must be targeted…

Aston Villa transfer news

According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo – via Sport Witness – Aston Villa are interested in signing Pedro Goncalves from Sporting Lisbon, with Emery insisting upon completing the deal before the window shuts.

Pedro Goncalves of Sporting CP

Ruben Amorim is desperate to keep the creative midfielder on the books, however, and is urging the Liga Portugal champions to reject any offers beneath his €80m (£68m) release clause.

How Goncalves compares to Joao Felix

Villa have done their homework on Felix, who has failed to prove himself a high-scoring player across his years of action after signing for Atletico Madrid from SL Benfica for £113m in 2019.

Barcelona's Joao Felix

The Portugal international scored ten goals and added six assists across all competitions last season, on loan at Barcelona, and while he impressed – Xavi called him the "difference-maker" at one point – the 24-year-old has not joined Camp Nou on a permanent given Barca's worrisome financial situation.

He'd be a fantastic addition to the Villans unit but it does look like Chelsea will complete the signing; the player's cohort are confident and eager.

No matter, Goncalves could actually prove to be a better signing anyway. His positional flexibility could see him operate across a number of roles this term, while his playmaking quality has even led him to be hailed as "the new Bruno Fernandes" by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

He is indeed performing as Fernandes' successor at Sporting, and doing so with aplomb. As per FBref, he ranks among the top 7% of attacking midfielders and wingers across divisions similar to the Portuguese top flight over the past year for goals scored and the top 2% for assists per 90.

Sporting Lisbon star Pedro Goncalves

It makes a telling comment on his prolificness, something that could translate clearly to life in the Premier League, bolstered by a healthy mix of talent across every area of the Villa Park pitch.

Last season, as per Sofascore, the Portugal international, aged 26, posted 11 goals and 12 assists across 32 league appearances, creating 18 big chances and averaging two key passes and 1.5 tackles per game.

Not just a playmaker, Goncalves is also capable of chipping in readily with defensive work, with this complete skillset even leading journalist Jack Collins to laud him as a "superstar".

Felix is an eminently talented player, a capable forward with a dynamic outlook, but he ebbs and flows and might not bring the same kind of attacking success. Indeed, he's yet to bag more than eight goals in a single league campaign (in one of Europe's top five leagues).

Aston Villa have been busy this summer, yes, but the Champions League have opened up a world of opportunity and now is the time to complete a heady summer of spending with one last lucrative flourish.

de Kock has not played any cricket since South Africa’s Test side returned from their two-match series in Pakistan. He was not part of the T20I squad, as South Africa were planning to play Australia in Tests at home (though the series was indefinitely postponed) and took a mental-health break during South Africa’s T20 competition.Earlier this month, de Kock was replaced as South Africa’s captain in all formats, having filled the Test role in a temporary capacity this summer and been installed as white-ball captain last February. Dean Elgar was appointed red-ball captain with Temba Bavuma taking over the ODI and T20I squads.Related

Although de Kock was expected to relinquish the long-format role, him being stripped of the limited-overs’ position as well came as a surprise, although selection convener Victor Mpitsang insisted it was a consultative decision. “He hasn’t been fired,” Mpitsang said. “We’ve come to an agreement to say that he doesn’t need the captaincy any more.”At the time, director of cricket Graeme Smith said de Kock remained a key part of South Africa’s plans in future. His return to the game will also put him in a position to play for South Africa against Pakistan next month, although that series will clash with the IPL. de Kock is contracted to the Mumbai Indians and is likely to have to miss at least a part of the Pakistan series. For now though, de Kock will want to do his bit to help the Titans secure their spot in the first-class final. They are currently at the top of Pool B, 14.16 points ahead of their nearest rivals, the Warriors. The top team from each pool will contest the final, which will be the last franchise match in South Africa before the system is dissolved to make way for a 15-team provincial set-up from next summer.

The investigation into the doomed handling of bio-secure procedures at the postponed Pakistan Super League will be headed by infectious disease experts Dr Syed Faisal Mahmood and Dr Salma Mohammad Abbas. The two-person fact-finding committee will investigate the protocols that had been in place for the league, look into what went wrong and submit their findings to PCB chairman Ehsan Mani by the end of this month. The day PCB CEO Wasim Khan announced the league had been indefinitely postponed, he promised an independent investigation into what went wrong when an outbreak within the bubble began to spread, with more cases turning up with each round of testing. There have been well-documented instances of Standard Operating Procedures(SOP) not being adhered to, and the experts are expected to assess if those SOPs were fit for purpose in the first place.Related

Dr Syed Faisal Mahmood is an Associate Professor in the Section of Infectious Diseases, at the Aga Khan University, while Dr Salma Muhammad Abbas is an infectious diseases consultant with the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Lahore.”The PCB takes the health and safety of its players, player support personnel and match officials seriously,” Mani said. “We have demonstrated our duty of care in the international series against Zimbabwe and South Africa, as well as during the nine domestic events in which we successfully staged 220 matches. This included the 34-match National T20 Cup in Multan and Rawalpindi as well as the first and second elevens Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and the Pakistan Cup in Karachi.”The PCB has been keen to point out, in the wake of the PSL suspension fiasco, that the home season had been, up until that point, conducted with relatively few incidents. Towards the end of last year, the board highlighted that it had conducted nearly 3000 tests across the domestic season. But the fragility of the measures alongside it – such as bio-secure bubbles and protocols – was evident in, for example, the number of players turning up with positive Covid-19 tests in New Zealand; more relevantly, it was evident in the number of cases that emerged from the playoffs of the PSL’s fifth season, played last November.Either way, what has happened over the past week or so at the PSL has undone any progress Pakistan had made in this regard, and Mani said he wanted the experts to provide an “honest, constructive and objective review. The independent panel will speak with all the relevant stakeholders, including the event and hotel staff, medical and compliance officers, team players and managements, so that we can get a better understanding how the cases occurred. The independent panel will make such recommendations as it considers appropriate.”Before the investigation has even begun, the debacle looks set to have claimed one scalp – the board’s doctor and man in charge of setting protocols at the league, Dr Sohail Saleem. But it’s unlikely he will be the last, especially as more damaging facts continue to emerge in the fallout. The report the experts are expected to submit is set to shed further light on precisely what went wrong.Since Fawad Ahmed tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday, organisers scrambled to try and get a potential outbreak under control, but it was already too late. Further cases were discovered at several different franchises, meaning the league wasn’t just dealing with one outbreak, but any number of them. On Thursday morning, when further cases at various franchises turned up, PSL 2021 was officially suspended.

Alongside Zubimendi: Liverpool target £25m star who’d make Diaz unplayable

All summer long, new Liverpool boss Arne Slot has been on the hunt for a new midfielder to try and bolster his ranks ahead of his debut campaign at the helm on Merseyside.

Players such as Matt O’Riley, Teun Koopmeiners and Adrien Rabiot have all been on the club’s radar during the off-season, but no deals have yet to be completed – with the Reds the only side in the Premier League yet to make a single signing.

However, in recent days, it’s emerged that the club are edging closer to securing a deal for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, with Slot and the hierarchy prepared to pay the €60m (£51m) release clause in his current deal.

Martin Zubimendi.

The Spaniard has previously had admirers from Arsenal and Manchester United, but it appears that Liverpool could be about to win the race for the 25-year-old’s services.

He could be joined on Merseyside by one player, with the Reds re-entering the race for his signature after previous interest earlier on this summer.

Liverpool register concrete interest in £25m talent

According to German outlet BILD, Liverpool have registered 'concrete interest' in Hoffenheim forward Maximilian Beier over a move to Anfield this summer.

Hoffenheim forward Maximilian Beier.

The 21-year-old has previously been subject to interest from fellow Premier League side Chelsea, but the Blues decided to pursue other targets – with Borussia Dortmund now looking the favourites for his signature.

It’s previously been reported by Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg that the forward has a €30m (£25m) release clause in his contract – a bargain for a player of his quality.

Beier registered 17 goal contributions in his 33 Bundesliga appearances last season, with his figures allowing one current Liverpool player to become unplayable this season.

Why Beier would make Diaz unplayable for Liverpool

There was always going to be a lot of expectations placed on the shoulders of winger Luis Diaz, with the Colombian tasked with taking over from Sadio Mané after his move to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2022.

In recent seasons, the 27-year-old has done an admirable job, registering 13 goal contributions in the Premier League last term – as the club secured a third-placed finish in Jürgen Klopp’s final campaign at the club.

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz.

However, his assist tally would’ve been much higher had he featured alongside a more clinical forward, with striker Darwin Núñez missing 27 big chances in the Premier League in 2023/24 – the second-most in the division.

The arrival of the “sensational” Beier, as described by journalist Zach Lowy, would see an increased number of goals for the Reds – with his tally of 16 in the Bundesliga a sign of how clinical he can be in front of goal.

Meanwhile, his potential move could see Diaz reach the next level, with his figures of 3.9 progressive passes and 5.6 shot-creating actions per 90 undoubtedly going to increase with the arrival of a proven goalscorer like Beier.

The club have had a potent forward line in recent years, but have struggled to replace the likes of Roberto Firmino, who departed Anfield at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

New South Wales miss WNCL final for first time history, Queensland cling onto second spot

South Australia were denied a place in the final when they lost in the last over against ACT

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Mar-2021For the first time in the competition’s 25-year history, New South Wales will not appear in the final of the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL).Their last league match against Queensland in Sydney was abandoned without a ball bowled removing any chance they had of finishing in the top two.Queensland then clung onto second place in the table, to play Victoria in the final on March 27, when ACT pulled off a last-over chase against South Australia to deny them the victory which would have booked their spot in the decider.New South Wales had appeared in every final (or finals series) since the tournament began in 1996-97, winning 20 of the 24 titles with one of their final losses coming last season against Western Australia meaning this is the first time they have gone back-to-back seasons without claiming the title. They made a poor start to the competition with losses in their first two games against Victoria then had a tie against Tasmania before three wins in a row kept them in the hunt. However, a heavy defeat against Queensland in Sydney two days ago ultimately proved costly.”The group’s proud of a lot of things we’ve achieved this year, it’s been such a tough year with Covid,” stand-in captain Sammy-Jo Johnson said. “We’ve done so many training sessions, the group’s had people come and go, there’s so many good things we’ve taken from this year.”To look towards next year it’s such a big positive that we’ll see some similar faces around the squad and hopefully push to get back in the final.”There have been a record number of centuries scored in this season’s tournament with Victoria’s Elyse Villani leading the way with three. Notably, 12 of the 16 centuries have come from players not currently in the Australia set-up.”Some new players have put their hands up with centuries and that’s something we speak about, about dominating the game you play and hundreds in one-day cricket are game-changing,” Australia captain Meg Lanning said last week. “It’s been great to see a number of new players doing that.”I think it’s just the overall professionalism of the game, people are training more, we’ve got access to better coaches and better facilities. Just being able to put all our effort into trying to get better as cricketers, I think that’s the reason there’s been really good performances being put out on the board.”Victoria have lost six players to Australia duty along with the injured Annabel Sutherland while Queensland will be without Beth Mooney and Jess Jonassen.
