Injured Holder out of Bangladesh tour; K Brathwaite to lead in Tests

Jason Holder was replaced by Guyana allrounder Raymon Reifer for the two Tests in Bangladesh

West Indies will be without their captain Jason Holder because of a shoulder injury for the entire tour of Bangladesh, starting November 22. They will be led by vice-captain Kraigg Brathwaite for the two-Test series in Chittagong and Dhaka.Sixteen-year-old Rishad Hossain picked in BCB XI squad

Bangladesh have picked Under-19 legspinner Rishad Hossain in the 13-man BCB XI squad that will take on West Indies for the two-day match in Chittagong. Rishad has been in good form for Bangladesh Under-19s this year.
From the current Bangladesh Test squad, the selectors have included Mohammad Mithun, Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Shafiul Islam. Among this season’s performers from the NCL, highest run-scorer Shadman Islam, top wicket-taker Nayeem Hasan, Mizanur Rahman, Robiul Haque and Soumya Sarkar were also picked.
Fazle Mahmud was also given an opportunity, after he had made two ducks in the ODIs against Zimbabwe.
The match is scheduled for November 18 and 19 at the MA Aziz Stadium in central Chittagong.
Squad: Rubel Hossain (capt), Soumya Sarkar, Zakir Hasan , Mizanur Rahman, Fazle Mahmud, Ebadot Hossain, Shadman Islam, Nazmul Islam Shanto, Nayeem Hasan, Shafiul Islam, Robiul Haque, Mohammad Mithun, Rishad Hossain

Holder was replaced in the 15-man squad by Guyana allrounder Raymon Reifer, the only change from the squad that toured India last month. Reifer made his Test debut against New Zealand in Hamilton last year for a total of 52 runs and two wickets in the match. He had played two patient innings at No. 8 in the Test West Indies lost: an unbeaten 23 in the first innings and a 109-ball 29 in the second. He has not played another Test since then.Holder has a partial thickness tear of the subscapularis tendon in his shoulder and will undergo physiotherapy and rehabilitation in Barbados, according to a CWI release. He will be reassessed in four weeks’ time, according to CWI chief executive Johnny Grave.”The medical panel were concerned that if Jason was to bowl in Bangladesh, the partial tear may become a full tear which may involve the need for surgery and/or a significant break from cricket,” Grave told . “It was, therefore, then recommended for Jason not to travel to Bangladesh and instead undergo physiotherapy and rehab in Barbados.”Holder said that he had been troubled with the injury since the World Cup Qualifiers in March. “I am definitely disappointed not being able to make the tour to Bangladesh,” he said. “But based on the advice from the medical team, we felt this was the best course of action to deal with the ongoing issues I have been having with my shoulder and prevent further damage.”I’ve been having issues with my shoulder since the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe in March. Since then I have been trying to manage it and the pain levels, but it has got to a point now where I’ve got to take time to correct it so that going forward I have no further issues. Obviously I am disappointed to miss the tour but I know the boys are capable of beating Bangladesh.”Ten members of the side will arrive in Chittagong on Wednesday, while the rest are scheduled to arrive in three groups on Thursday. West Indies’ first on-field action in Bangladesh is a two-day practice match in Chittagong. The two Test series will be followed by three ODIs and as many T20Is in December to be played in Dhaka and Sylhet.Test squad: Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), Sunil Ambris, Devendra Bishoo, Roston Chase, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Jahmar Hamilton, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, Shermon Lewis, Keemo Paul, Kieran Powell, Raymon Reifer, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican

Luis Enrique 'waiting' for Kylian Mbappe to publicly clarify his future after proving himself as PSG's 'indisputable leader' in Champions League comeback against Barcelona

PSG manager Luis Enrique admits he's still waiting for Kylian Mbappe to clarify his future following his two-goal display against Barcelona.

  • Mbappe's future yet to be confirmed
  • Forward tipped to join Real Madrid
  • Luis Enrique still waiting on a decision
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

PSG manager Luis Enrique has admitted he's still waiting to hear Kylian Mbappe's plans for the future after seeing the forward score twice to seal a comeback Champions League win over Barcelona and a place in the last four. Mbappe is expected to join Real Madrid at the end of the season but he's yet to make an official announcement on his future. It has been speculated that the transfer will be made public once it's no longer possible for the two teams to meet in this season's Champions League. PSG will play Borussia Dortmund next for a place in the final, while Real Madrid face Manchester City on Wednesday in the second leg of their quarter-final tie with the scoreline level at 3-3.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Luis Enrique may be waiting on a decision from Mbappe but he already seems to be preparing for life without his talisman. The PSG coach has been happy to bench his star attacker this season and has said his team must "get used" to playing without Mbappe. Luis Enrique has also suggested Mbappe could end up staying at PSG this season, although it still appears likely he will depart for Real Madrid after his contract expires in the summer.

  • WHAT LUIS ENRIQUE SAID

He told reporters: "Let’s wait for Mr Kylian to speak about his future. When Mbappe and PSG will speak in public, we will see. It’s like a process. Until Mbappe goes and speaks in public, I’m just here waiting and staying silent."

Luis Enrique also went on to praise Mbappe for his performance: "Mbappe was today the indisputable leader of the team in this aspect of the game which does not allow us to rest. The pressing carried out by the whole team, by Kylian, by Ousmane Dembele or by Bradley Barcola meant that we pressed as a five. When Mbappe leads by example, the team is much stronger. Hats off! It was what we all wanted. It’s proof that he can lead by example, and when Kylian does that, we are much better.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR MBAPPE

Mbappe will continue with PSG for the rest of the season and will hope to lead the club to a first ever Champions League triumph. PSG are also close to yet another Ligue 1 title as the team currently sit 10 points clear at the top of the table.

O’Neil could ease Gomes blow by unleashing "exploding" Wolves gem

Wolverhampton Wanderers face arguably one of their most daunting tasks yet this season – playing Arsenal at the Emirates.

They shouldn’t be put off by this gargantuan tie however, as they have already defeated Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur this term, while securing a point against Newcastle United and the Gunners will need to be wary.

Gary O’Neil has built a solid team during his first few months at the Old Gold and if he aims to push his side towards a top-half finish in the Premier League, securing a positive result against the north London side could go a long way.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

The 40-year-old will need to make a few changes to his starting XI from the match against Fulham at the start of the week and one key player will be missing…

Joao Gomes’ season in numbers

Joao Gomes will miss the Arsenal tie due to suspension having picked up a booking against the Cottagers in his last match and this is a big blow for the club.

The Brazilian has been a constant fixture in the starting XI this term, missing just two matches, yet he has picked up five bookings and this is something O’Neil may be telling him to watch out for in the future.

Gomes has succeeded with 62% of his dribble attempts while recovering 5.3 balls per game and his presence in the midfield will be missed by the Molineux outfit.

The question is, who will replace him in the heart of the midfield?

Boubacar Traore could replace Joao Gomes

Boubacar Traore joined the Midlands side during the summer of 2022 on an initial season-long loan, but he played just 12 times due to suffering a groin injury in January.

The midfielder was previously dubbed as a youngster who was “exploding” by his former manager at Metz, Frederic Antonetti, and due to triggering a few clauses at the end of his loan spell, Wolves secured his signature on a permanent basis during the summer.

The 22-year-old has started just twice in the Premier League during 2023/24 however, and he will need to be at his best to nullify an Arsenal side who only recently scored six goals against French side Lens.

Traore has succeeded with 100% of his dribbles during his brief time on the pitch thus far, along with averaging 1.5 tackles per game and recovering 3.1 balls per game, and a more consistent run in the team should see these statistics improve.

Alongside Gomes, Mario Lemina is suspended too and this will mean O’Neil will have to make wholesale changes to his midfield ahead of the clash against the Gunners.

O'Neil could sign "outstanding" £2m gem to replace £40k-p/w Wolves star

This Old Gold appear to have their eyes firmly fixed on an exciting young talent…

ByAdam Scully Dec 1, 2023

Missing two vital players won't help his cause, but by unleashing the £55k-per-week gem, O'Neil could give the youngster a valuable start against one of the best teams in the league.

It remains to be seen whether Traore will be up for the challenge, yet his prior performances last term before getting injured were positive and if he can replicate those this afternoon, he might just prove a lot of people wrong.

Farke’s 8/10 Leeds star who won 8 duels was "tremendous" in Boro triumph

It's never dull at Leeds United is it?

The Whites maintained their promotion charge with a thrilling 3-2 win over Middlesbrough at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon, with Daniel Farke's men just edging it in what was a pulsating encounter right from the off in West Yorkshire.

A frantic opening saw the hosts come from behind to claim a 2-1 lead inside seven first-half minutes, before heading in at the break with another slender 3-2 lead following Emmanuel Latte Lath's strike on the stroke of half-time.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

While Leeds' hopes of hanging onto victory were bolstered by a second-half dismissal for Anfernee Dijksteel, it was still far from plain-sailing despite that man advantage, with the home crowd no doubt drawing a collective sigh of relief on the full-time whistle.

The star performers for Leeds vs Middlesbrough

As has so often been the way this season, it was yet another glittering showing from the men on the flanks, with Daniel James netting his sixth goal of the season in those mad opening few minutes, before Crysencio Summerville swiftly took his tally to seven goals and six assists in the Championship just minutes later.

The latter man was a constant menace down the left-hand side having also recorded five key passes to go alongside his goal as an indication of his creative prowess, having also completed three of his six dribble attempts and created one 'big chance'.

rutter-summerville-leeds-opinion

As LeedsLive's Beren Cross noted, the young Dutchman was simply 'untouchable' as 'every time he gets the ball he seems to hurt the opponents', with second-tier defences now no doubt dreading the sight of the fleet-footed winger.

A word must also be said for his compatriot Joel Piroe who bagged his eighth league goal of the season from the penalty spot, yet a stronger shoutout must also be given to young Archie Gray, who was once again "tremendous at right-back" – as Cross suggested on Twitter.

Archie Gray's performance in numbers vs 'Boro

As a player coveting Premier League attention – with a £50m price tag having been banded about – Leeds supporters have come to expect a lot from the 17-year-old of late, yet it is still worth remembering just what a feat it is to be shining at senior level at such a young age.

Continuing in his new role at full-back, despite typically operating in the midfield ranks in the youth set-up, the Englishman was at his brilliant best against Michael Carrick's side, notably winning eight of his 12 ground duels as a sign of his unerring defensive strength.

It is on the ball where the composed youngster truly shines, however, having remarkably walked away with a stellar pass accuracy rate of 96% from his 90-minute outing, only misplacing two of his 46 passes on the day.

Not that the in-demand sensation merely played it safe when he did take possession, having successfully completed all three of his attempted dribbles and provided one key pass from his defensive berth, while also earning three fouls for his side.

Archie Gray for Leeds United.

It was then no surprise to see Yorkshire Post's Leon Wobschall hand the teenager an 8/10 match rating as a reward for that fine showing, with Gray once again stealing the spotlight despite not even getting on the scoresheet this afternoon.

Not that anyone at Elland Road needed reminding, but the England U20 international simply showed yet again just what a class act he is. Long may it continue.

Crystal Palace keen on "fabulous" star, his current club want to keep him

Crystal Palace are reportedly keen to strike a deal for a new player in January as Roy Hodgson aims to elevate the Eagles' standing in the Premier League table.

Crystal Palace's inconsistent results…

Undoubtedly, Crystal Palace have endured some inconsistent results in recent times and have won just one of their last five matches across all competitions. Sitting 13th in the Premier League standings, veteran boss Hodgson will acknowledge that there are positives to take alongside improvements to implement once club football resumes after the international break.

Despite losing 3-2 at home to Everton last weekend, the 76-year-old didn't seem to be too despondent in his post-match analysis of the affair, harbouring mild frustrations rather than anger toward his side's performance. Cited by Liverpool World, Hodgson stated: "At half-time, we were fairly confident that we could go out and continue in the way that we'd been playing, which had got us the equaliser and given us some ascendancy in large parts of the game, only to concede yet again after a couple of minutes."

He then added: "And then I thought it was a really good effort, and we actually played well to get the 2-2 goal, which would have been a good result on the day, after being behind twice in the way we were. So to concede a third goal, of course, is very frustrating and saddening, really, because it leaves me feeling that we could and should have done better today, and at least held on to the point that we definitely had and deserved when we equalised."

Nevertheless, Crystal Palace will be left to rue deficiencies in their performance against Everton as they now turn their attention to a trip to Kenilworth Road on November 25th, where they will face another stiff test in the form of Rob Edwards' Luton Town.

Josh Brownhill wanted by Crystal Palace

According to TEAMtalk, Crystal Palace are keen on Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill, who is also being courted by the likes of West Ham United, Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 27-year-old has become a key player at Turf Moor and his contract is reported to expire in Lancashire in the summer of 2024; however, Vincent Kompany is believed to have taken up a one-year extension option on his deal and has made it clear to the Clarets' hierarchy that he wants to see him sign a long-term agreement at Burnley to avoid losing his services.

Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill.

Labelled "fabulous" by former Aston Villa man Lee Hendrie, Brownhill has made 12 appearances this term for Burnley, registering two goals and one assist (Brownhill statistics – Transfermarkt). Taking notice of his positive form, Crystal Palace should at least test the waters to try and land the Warrington-born man sooner rather than later as Hodgson looks to bolster his engine room.

Mitchell Marsh admits omission brings vice-captain uncertainty

The allrounder made 21 and 11 after returning to the Sheffield Shield and appears unlikely to play the second Test against India

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Dec-2018

Mitchell Marsh walks off after being given lbw•Getty Images

Mitchell Marsh missed an opportunity to make a forceful statement to Australia’s selectors after being left out of the first Test against India and doesn’t know the impact his omission will have on his role as joint vice-captain.Marsh was named as vice-captain of the Test side alongside Josh Hazlewood earlier this year, but neither have played in the same team yet after Hazlewood missed the Tests in the UAE and now Marsh’s axing for Adelaide. It is an unusual situation for a team to have a designated vice-captain on the sidelines other than through injury.”I don’t know where I stand in that sense,” he said. “Lucky we’ve got two vice-captains.”Marsh was dropped when Australia favoured Peter Handscomb as a specialist batsman in the middle order and the allrounder was sent back to the Sheffield Shield with instructions to score runs.ALSO READ: A genuine fight, but more pain for AustraliaHe returned 21 and 11 for Western Australia against Victoria at the MCG – and claimed 1 for 102 – in a performance that did not hammer the door down for an immediate recall.”I was obviously very disappointed to miss out in the first Test but I understood the reasons why,” Marsh told reporters in Melbourne. “Ultimately, you’ve got two ways to go about it – you can either sulk and go into your shell or you can put a smile on your face and enjoy the hard work, enjoy the challenge of getting back into that Test side.”Despite struggles in the UAE against Pakistan, where he made 30 runs in four innings which continued a lean Test run dating back to South Africa, Marsh returned to domestic action with 151 against Queensland last month but then followed that with scores of 1, 44, 6 and 30 in the next two matches before the Test squad assembled.”I still felt like I was in really good form and feeling very confident heading into last week. But ultimately I still had two chances before the Test match to put a big score on the board and I didn’t do that. The message was clear – I needed more runs.”It appears unlikely Marsh will get his chance in his home state of Perth despite continued discussion about the workload Australia’s three quicks face without the presence of an allrounder.Mitchell Starc, who sent down 40.5 overs, was disappointing in Adelaide but has been backed by captain Paine while Hazlewood clocked up 43 overs and Pat Cummins 37.”I was certainly pumped about [playing in Perth] and I still am,” Marsh said. “I’m in the squad so I’d say I’m a chance … ultimately it’ll come down to conditions and how the bowlers pull up.”

Rangpur's local talent excites head coach Moody

Focus not on superstars Gayle and de Villiers in team’s quest to replicate success of the previous season

Mohammad Isam03-Jan-2019Tom Moody, the Rangpur Riders head coach, has a battery of superstars – a batting line-up that includes Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Alex Hales – at his disposal for BPL 2019, but the Australian is focused on team-building, rather than stressing on individuals. While Hales will be available for the entire tournament, AB de Villiers, whom Moody will be working with for the first time, is available for seven matches in his maiden BPL stint. As a senior cricketer, who has enough subcontinent experience to bank on, Moody hoped to involve him in helping young players develop their game, but insisted the focus won’t be on him alone.”It is going to be a collective effort that will help win the tournament,” Moody said. “We will be relying on all our domestic and international players to step up when their opportunity comes. An individual can influence and win a game from time to time, but it is more of a team effort that wins championships.”I haven’t worked with AB de Villiers one-on-one before. I have worked with Hales and Gayle before. It will be great to work with AB. He is going to add a different presence to this side. He is a world-class player in this format. He can be very dangerous, but the focus won’t be on him as an individual. I think it is important that we all step up in our playing XI to play our roles.”Moody isn’t new to his team starting slowly. In the previous season, Rangpur were in early trouble with three losses in four games, but found their muscle midway through courtesy their domestic players. Once into the knockouts, they saw their trump cards Johnson Charles and Gayle unleash mayhem. The coach doesn’t want to see a similar situation this time, but believes they are prepared for that eventuality.”We had our challenges last year,” he said. “We had a successful win but it wasn’t smooth sailing. Halfway through the tournament we found ourselves in the bottom half of the table. I think you need to remain calm in those situations and it may well happen again. We have to find a rhythm to our game.”Rangpur have secured the services of some of their key players from last year, despite not being retained. Ravi Bopara, Sohag Gazi and Nahidul Islam were all re-acquired at the draft, along with local players Shafiul Islam, Farhad Reza, Mehedi Maruf, Nadif Chowdhury and Abul Hasan, all of whom impressed last season.”We are lucky enough to secure some familiar faces from last year, but I am excited to have a look at our domestic players with whom I haven’t worked before. It is important that they recognise their role in our campaign is as important as anyone else’s in the team.”Rangpur take on Chittagong Vikings in the BPL’s opening fixture on Saturday.

Spurs happy to sanction exit of “imposing” player despite injuries

Tottenham Hotspur are happy to sanction the sale of a central player despite the injury to Rodrigo Bentancur, according to a fresh report.

Bentancur set for spell on the sidelines

During the Premier League 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa last weekend, Bentancur sustained a serious ankle ligament injury, and whilst his diagnosis was unknown at the time, there has since been some devastating news regarding his fitness and road to recovery.

The Lilywhites star will try to rectify his problem and as a result won’t be available for selection again until February at the very earliest, but regardless of cover needing to be provided, the club are still set to get rid of one of their other players in January.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has made just two starts and ten substitute appearances this season in the top-flight under Ange Postecoglou (WhoScored – Hojbjerg statistics), and with the defensive midfielder having fallen significantly out of favour, it’s been claimed that he wants to leave during the upcoming window.

The Telegraph had reported that because of Bentancur’s injury, Denmark’s international could see any offers rejected, but if the following update is to be believed, the 28-year-old is still someone who is on the chopping block at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs willing to sell Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg

According to TuttoMercatoWeb (via Sport Witness), Tottenham are happy to sell Hojbjerg in January. The Spurs ace “can still leave” the club despite the current injury crisis that they find themselves in, and he could be heading for Juventus, who “continue to work” to convince Daniel Levy to let him depart on loan.

However, the chairman won’t agree to this because he is looking to reach an agreement over a permanent deal, so as it stands, his admirer is “attentive to developments”.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielderPierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Tottenham need to keep "imposing" Hojbjerg

Whilst Hojbjerg is clearly low down in the pecking order in the eyes of Postecoglou, Spurs will know that they still have an extremely talented player on their hands, so the hierarchy should make the decision to keep him in the building beyond January.

Sponsored by Adidas, Copenhagen’s native currently ranks in the 92nd percentile for clearances, showing how strong he is at being able to protect his backline by getting rid of the danger before it reaches them (FBRef – Hojbjerg statistics), but he’s also capable of making a positive impact in the final third.

Levy’s talisman has racked up 26 contributions, 16 assists and ten goals, in 158 appearances during his time at the club (Transfermarkt – Hojbjerg statistics), making himself an “imposing” player and a handful to deal with in the centre of the park, as hailed by journalist Josh Bunting.

Furthermore, Hojbjerg is even a versatile operator having been deployed in seven different positions since the start of his career, including everywhere across the midfield and even at left-back and right-back, so the board would be making a huge mistake if they were to sanction his sale in January given the depth issue in the squad.
