Half-centuries from Shaiman Anwar and Muhammad Usman laid the platform for UAE to beat Namibia by 19 runs and qualify for the World Cup Qualifier in Windhoek by the narrowest of margins. UAE ended their WCL Division Two campaign with six points, the same as Canada – who narrowly lost their last match to Nepal – and Namibia, but with a better net run rate than either.Sent in to bat, UAE initially struggled to force the pace and were 97 for 4 in the 31st over when Usman joined Shaiman. They proceeded to transform the mood of the innings, putting on 120 in 103 balls before being dismissed in the slog overs. Usman made 59 off 57 balls, with three fours and two sixes, while Shaiman struck five fours and three sixes in his 77 off 59. JJ Smit was Namibia’s most successful bowler with figures of 3 for 57.Set 248 to win, Namibia slipped to 48 for 3 before Lohan Louwrens (43) and Craig Williams steadied them with a 50-run stand for the fourth wicket. Williams then put on 47 for the sixth wicket with Gerhard Erasmus before falling for 54 off 79 balls. It left Namibia six down and quite a way off the pace, with 94 still to get in 73 balls. They lost Smit soon after, too, but the in-form Erasmus and captain Sarel Burger (21) kept them in the hunt. When the offspinner Rohan Mustafa dismissed Erasmus for a 63-ball 58, Namibia needed 28 from 14.They had only two wickets left, however, and Amir Hayat and Mustafa – who finished with three wickets apiece – ended their innings in a hurry, Namibia eventually bowled out for 228.
After Sri Lanka lost a wicket before they had even scored a run, Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Silva wiped 187 runs off Bangladesh’s 513
The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando01-Feb-2018Stumps Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva run between the wickets•Associated Press
Mahmudullah’s 83 not out heaved Bangladesh to 513, before the two big hopes of Sri Lanka’s top order – Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis – wiped 187 runs off the deficit together, and remained unbeaten at the close of play.Though the spinners had a little more purchase, this was, in short, another batting day in Chittagong. Rangana Herath did impose himself on the match for the first time and Mehidy Hasan took the only Sri Lanka wicket with the new ball, when the opposition were still scoreless. But only the occasional ball turned sharply, and the quicks had little assistance. By mounting such a monumental score, however, Bangladesh have given themselves a cushion – Sri Lanka must bat well again on Friday to come to a position of parity.De Silva, rarely rattled, was calm and assertive from the outset, driving impeccably, and never shy to flit around the crease in the course of manufacturing of a dab or a lap sweep against the spinners. There is growing sentiment that he is one of Sri Lanka’s most versatile Test batsmen, and this innings was further evidence. No portion of the field was unfruitful for Dananjaya, and bowler could trouble him for long. If a few dot balls mounted, he would slink down the pitch to loft the spinner over the offside, or back away to punch him square of the pitch. Where many batsmen fear losing their wickets just before a break, Dananjaya saw opportunity; thrice he ran at Taijul Islam in the over before tea, and thrice he hoisted him over the infield for boundaries. In between the big blows, singles and twos, eased comfortably through the field – no fuss, just confident Test batting. The only half-chance off de Silva’s bat came when he was on 65, and Mustafizur Rahman drew an edge with a ball that straightened. The chance flew low between first and second slip, neither fielder getting close to the ball. A few overs later, Taijul Islam hit him on the pad after he had skipped down the track, and Bangladesh burned one of their reviews, now quite desperate to dislodge him. As he had been struck more than three metres from the stumps, the ball tracking did not even come into play. Six overs later, after a minor deceleration during the nineties, Dananjaya struck a sublime backfoot punch off Taijul to complete a 122-ball century. It was his second triple-figure score in as many innings: the excellent match-saving hundred at Delhi being his most recent effort.Mendis’ innings, was not nearly as convincing. He had been beaten repeatedly by Sunzamul Islam in the early overs, and was often uncomfortable against each of Bangladesh’s three left-arm spinners, right until the final over of the day. He could have been caught in the slips twice. He was dropped by a diving Mehidy on four, off the bowling of Mustafizur, and later, Mehidy had a similarly difficult chance go down of his own bowling. Batting on 57, Mendis edged a straighter delivery, that just evaded he keeper’s gloves, but was too fine for slip to lay a hand on it. There was an lbw review against him also, but as the ball was passing over the stumps, the original decision prevailed. In between the tetchy moments, were flashes of Mendis skill – the rocket-powered flat sweeps, and the rapid pull shots whenever the bowlers dropped short. All six of Mendis’ intentional boundaries came on the legside, as did a majority of his singles. This being his comeback Test innings after being dropped for the tour of India, Mendis stuck largely to his stronger scoring areas. The two had come together after Dimuth Karunaratne fell in the third over, edging Mehidy to slip.Earlier on day two, Mahmudullah had been the spine in a good lower-order batting effort from Bangladesh. Though they had lost two quick wickets inside the first seven overs – including that of overnight centurion Mominul Haque – Mahmudullah had combined with Sunzamul Islam to ensure Bangladesh remained on track for a score of over 500. The two put on 58 for the eighth wicket, before Sunzamul was stumped down the legside, having failed to read a Lakshan Sandakan googly. Mahmudhullah trusted his tail-end partners. Only when No. 11 Mustafizur came to the crease did he kick his own innings into a higher tempo, and even then, did not turn down singles.Suranga Lakmal dismissed Mustafizur with a short ball to finish with the innings’ best figures of 3 for 58. The spinners’ returned far less flattering numbers. Dilruwan Perera and Herath both conceded well over a hundred runs, and Lakshan Sandakan had 2 for 92.
Reliable journalist Alasdair Gold has shared an update on Tottenham Hotspur and their pursuit of Nottingham Forest winger Brennan Johnson.
Are Tottenham signing anyone?
Spurs and new manager Ange Postecoglou have enjoyed a fine start to the new season overall, flying high in the league with two wins and a draw from their opening three games.
Unfortunately for the north Londoners, though, they crashed out of the Carabao Cup second round on penalties last night with Tete scoring the decisive spot kick and sending Fulham through.
Postecoglou's brand of new-look, attack minded football has been plain for all supporters to see and there have been some very promising signs – but Tottenham's much-changed side on Tuesday perhaps shown that more strength in depth is needed.
The Lilywhites have just two days to strengthen their ranks further and time is quickly running out, with Spurs now also opening discussions over signing Ansu Fati on loan from Barcelona.
Fabrizio Romano, a very reliable transfer source, has claimed in the past 24 hours that talks are also continuing for Johnson amid their chase for Fati.
The Forest winger has been tipped as a top Spurs target over the last few days and it is a move which could apparently go down to the wire.
Johnson played a starring role for Steve Cooper's side last season as they avoided a drop straight back to the Championship, finishing the 2022/2023 campaign with eight goals and three assists in the top flight alone.
Sharing an update, football.london's Spurs correspondent Gold has claimed that the Wales international forward is Postecoglou's personal number one attacking target for the remaining days of this window.
brennan-johnson-2
Johnson is viewed by Tottenham's head coach as the "perfect" fit for his system, with talks "now" taking place over a move for the 22-year-old.
However, the is a word of caution, as a deal for him will be "painstaking" and could even go right down to last minute of the summer window.
“Brennan Johnson is Ange Postecoglou’s number one attacking target for the remainder of this transfer window," said Gold on his YouTube channel (transcribed by TBR)
"He apparently feels he is the perfect fit for his system, very fast, tricky kind of player, a young player with a high ceiling. Talks have now taken place.
“It is going to be painstaking, everything I’m hearing is that this could go right to the wire, it could go to the very end.”
How good is Brennan Johnson?
Barring his eleven goal contributions for Forest last term, Johnson has been praised for his performances in recent years by Wales national team boss Rob Page.
brennan-johnson-3
“Brennan could potentially have had a move in January,” said Page in 2022.
“But he decided to stay because he’s at a club where he was going to play and enjoy his football.
“That speaks volumes about him. He didn’t go chasing the money. He’s almost the finished article now and Forest have got a wonderful player on their hands.
“I’ve been to watch him a few times and he’s playing with freedom. He’s really enjoying his football."
Still very young and with room to improve further, he could be an astute late signing for Spurs.

Ross Taylor, the New Zealand batsman, has signed to play as an overseas player for Nottinghamshire during the first half of the season
ESPNcricinfo staff08-Mar-2018Ross Taylor, the New Zealand batsman, has signed to play as an overseas player for Nottinghamshire during the first half of the season. Taylor injured himself during the course of his epic 181 not out in the fourth ODI against England, but is expected to be fit for a spell of eight Championship games and the Royal London Cup group stage at Trent Bridge.Taylor turned 34 on Thursday but had to put a birthday drink on hold after aggravating a quad problem in Dunedin, which makes him a doubt for the deciding ODI on Saturday, as well as forcing Notts to delay the announcement of his signing. One of New Zealand’s most prolific batsmen, he scored his 19th ODI ton – and second of the series – against England on Wednesday. As long as there is no reaction to his latest leg injury, Taylor will also be looking to add to his 6246 Test runs during the two-match series in late March.Taylor has been contracted until mid-June but could stay on for the Royal London Cup knockout stages, with Nottinghamshire looking to defend the trophy the won in 2017. He has previously played county cricket for Durham and Sussex.”I’m really excited about joining Nottinghamshire as they return to Division One of the Specsavers County Championship, and I hope I can play an important part in helping them become re-established at the higher level,” Taylor said. “It’s also great to be joining a team who are defending a white-ball trophy, with the club having won the Royal London One-Day Cup last summer, and hopefully the team can mount a strong challenge again.”I’ve enjoyed playing against England for New Zealand in the early part of this year, and I’m looking forward to testing myself in the early-season English conditions when I arrive at Trent Bridge for the start of the new season.”Taylor’s arrival will add significant red-ball experience to the middle order at Notts, after the retirements of Michael Lumb, Greg Smith and Chris Read, Brendan Taylor’s return to Zimbabwe and the request by Alex Hales to only play limited-overs cricket.Notts finished second in Division Two of the Championship last year, winning promotion after a season in the second tier, and also claimed a white-ball double by lifting the Royal London Cup and NatWest T20 Blast.Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket Mick Newell said: “Ross is a world-class performer who brings with him an excellent record at the highest level in both red- and white-ball cricket, as well as plenty of experience. He is just what we were looking for to strengthen the top order of our four-day batting line-up, where we have lost the likes of Michael Lumb and Brendan Taylor from last year, and his aggressive style suits the type of 50-over cricket we look to play.””With Ross suffering a recurrence of a previous quad injury in his century for New Zealand against England on Wednesday, we have been monitoring his fitness, which delayed the announcement of the signing by us. We will continue to check in with Ross and the New Zealand team’s medical staff, but he’s confident that he will be fully fit come the start of our season.”
Journalist Dean Jones has revealed how Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy "stumbled across" the appointment of popular Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.
How are Tottenham doing?
Life under their new head coach has been very, very sweet so far.
Tottenham's new-look brand of exciting, attack-minded football has both thrilled supporters and brought back an air of real positivity to north London.
Antonio Conte's last season in charge of Spurs was one to forget as the Italian – in one last hurrah – publicly blasted his squad, the club and even Levy in a fiery post-match press conference.
It took the Lilywhites nearly half-a-year to replace Conte, but they ultimately settled on hiring Postecoglou. The 58-year-old's impressive track record of winning trophies, but in far-inferior divisions, made this huge decision a rather intriguing one.
Postecoglou has enjoyed lots of success throughout his career; racking up five league titles in the Far East across spells at Brisbane Roar, South Melbourne FC and Japanese side Yokohoma F.Marinos.
The former Australia national team manager also guided his nation to a 2015 Asian Cup triumph on home soil, with his accolades subsequently turning a few heads in Scotland.
Ange Postecoglou
Celtic hired Postecoglou to replace Neil Lennon in 2021 during what was a tough period for the Hoops. However, soon afterwards, the Glasgow giants began dominating the SPFL yet again.
The Parkhead side went on to win five major domestic trophies during Postecoglou's two-year spell, and after many years plying his trade as a head coach, 2023 was surely the time for an elite Premier League side to take notice.
Spurs chairman Levy, in early June, moved to hire the 58-year-old over fellow prestigious candidates like ex-Barcelona boss Luis Enrique at the time.
This call has been utterly justified so far, as Postecoglou has guided Tottenham to three wins out of their opening four league matches this season; remaining unbeaten. In that time, Spurs have scored 11 goals and stars like Yves Bissouma have thrived playing "Ange-ball".
Postecoglou's start to life is made all-the-more impressive given Tottenham are having to make do without former superstar Harry Kane, who sealed a blockbuster switch to Bayern Munich earlier this summer.
Speaking to Sky last month, Spurs' fan favourite tactician explained exactly why his philosophy is the way forward; speaking of a need to play entertaining football for the fans.
"That's the beauty of our game," Postecoglou said.
"The beauty of football is that there are so many ways you can have success, so many ways you can set up your team, so many ways you can counteract the opposition.
"I'm probably at one extreme and there are others at the other extreme and we can both have success in this game.
"I think especially with a football club like this, that has consistently looked for that in their teams, they've loved the entertainers, there's a connection there with that kind of football."
Why did Tottenham appoint Ange Postecoglou?
Now, reporter Jones has shed some light on Postecoglou's move to N17. Writing for GiveMeSport, the journalist drops an interesting line concerning Spurs chief Levy.
The Tottenham boardroom head is believed to have "stumbled across a gem" in Postecoglou's appointment, coming after he was "ushered towards" offering him the job by agents.
Whoever those representatives were, it's safe to say the club should be truly, truly thankful for their efforts in swaying Levy, as life hasn't been this good at Spurs for a long time.
Since Nottingham Forest’s promotion to the Premier League ahead of the 2022/23 season, they have gained a reputation for their activity in the transfer windows.
Owner Evangelos Marinakis has overseen a total of 43 signings, some of which have already moved on.
Despite the remarkable number of incomings, the Reds don’t intend to slow down their presence in the market, with another target already being lined up ahead of the winter transfer window.
Who have Forest signed since being promoted?
Of the Reds’ 43 signings, some have stood out more than others.
The likes of Morgan Gibbs-White and Taiwo Awoniyi have since become central to Steve Cooper’s plans since their big-money arrivals last season, while some of the newer faces such as Anthony Elanga and Matt Turner have made early impact at the club.
Jesse Lingard, who joined the club as a free agent last season, was unable to earn himself a contract extension and was subsequently released after an underwhelming spell at the City Ground.
After the departure of star player Brennan Johnson, who joined Tottenham Hotspur on deadline day for £47.5m, Forest are already planning how to spend the money, with Spanish newspaper Estadio Deportivo reporting that Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez is high on their list for the January window.
Who is Guido Rodriguez?
Rodriguez has been playing in Spain for almost four years now, after joining Betis from Mexican outfit Club America in January 2020.
The 29-year-old has been capped 29 times for his native Argentina and featured at the 2022 World Cup as they became world champions.
The Argentine has excelled in Manuel Pellegrini’s side playing in a pivot alongside Portuguese midfielder, William Carvalho, and is best described as a deep-lying playmaker who can also be deployed in a back line of defence.
Rodriguez has been linked with a number of clubs in recent summers, including Barcelona, who would instead go with the cheaper option in Oriol Romeu, while Forest’s previous interest was disregarded by the player.
When questioned on Rodriguez’s potential summer move, Pellegrini stressed his side could not afford to lose another creative outlet, following the departures of several forwards who had already moved on.
As the midfielder enters the final season of his current contract, the report suggests that Betis would prefer to cash in during the January window, which could hand Forest a timely boost on a player that is estimated to be worth £15m by FootballTransfers.
Where could Rodriguez fit in at Forest?
Should Forest be able to tempt the 29-year-old "defensive monster" – as once lauded by analyst Marcus Bring – into a winter move, it would bring a priceless amount of experience into the squad, having racked up nearly 300 senior appearances since his professional debut back in 2014/15.
Rodriguez could be utilised alongside either Orel Mangala or Ryan Yates or among a back three, whilst his relationship with Forest’s new signing and his Argentina teammate, Gonzalo Montiel, can prove extremely useful for Steve Cooper’s side.
The next 12 months will certainly involve movement regarding Rodriguez’ current situation, whether that sees him sign a new deal with the club that brought him into European football or a new experience elsewhere, though Cooper and Forest would be wise to launch a move in the upcoming window to bolster the Reds' engine room substantially.
Glasgow Rangers secured a relatively comfortable win against Ross County over the weekend which sets Michael Beale's Ibrox side up nicely for their vital Champions League playoff tie second leg on Wednesday evening.
The task against PSV Eindhoven will be tough, yet the Gers secured a famous 1-0 victory away from home against the same opposition a year ago and the boss will be hoping lightning does indeed strike twice.
With the transfer window closing on Friday, Beale may also be eyeing a late deal or two, and he alluded to it while speaking to Sky Sports.
What has Michael Beale said about incomings at Rangers?
In quotes relayed by The Scottish Sun), the manager said:
"I think there's been a little bit in terms of one or two names out there there's been a little bit of truth in that. But nothing for us to confirm right now.
"Come the end of the window you may see one or two out and one in but it is all open at the moment in that sense."
With Ianis Hagi already joining Alaves on a loan deal, could Beale move on another player, this time Ben Davies?
Does Ben Davies have a future at Rangers?
At the beginning of the month, The 4th Official gave a transfer update on the defender's future, saying that “Ben Davies told he is free to move away” and it looked as though the Light Blues were getting ready to sell their £4m signing after just a year at the club.
Read the latest Rangers transfer news HERE…
The 2022/23 campaign wasn't the greatest for the former Liverpool defender as he failed to rank in the top ten across the squad for overall Sofascore rating and tackles per game, while ranking seventh for interceptions per game, indicating that he wasn’t as influential as first anticipated upon his arrival.
The Gers have shown interest in a few defenders of late, with Zak Vyner and Jake Cooper the names mentioned. Cooper has recently signed a new deal with Millwall however and a move for Vyner doesn’t look like it will materialise.
As such, the 42-year-old may well be out to target the English Championship for someone else; Harry Souttar.
Are Rangers signing Harry Souttar?
The Leicester City centre-back was first linked a few weeks ago by journalist Geoff Peters, who said:
“Rangers are interested in taking Harry Souttar on loan from Leicester City. Souttar was an unused sub against Coventry at the weekend and not in the 20-man #lcfc squad tonight at Burton. Other clubs also monitoring the situation. His older brother John joined Rangers last year.”
Harry Souttar
Souttar has played 73 matches across the top two divisions in England since arriving at Stoke City in 2016, yet it was the 2022/23 season where he began to show his true worth.
Firstly, he starred at the 2022 World Cup for Australia, showcasing his defensive qualities by winning a whopping 4.8 total duels per game – at a success rate of 68% – while also making 5.5 clearances and 1.5 interceptions per game, good enough to rank him first and second in the squad for the latter two metrics.
Additionally, he was also solid for the Foxes during the second half of the season, despite their relegation, winning a staggering 3.2 aerial duels per game – a success rate of 86% – while he also ranked in the top ten for clearances and interceptions. Considering he started just 11 matches for the club, this is rather impressive.
The £40k-per-week centre-back was even hailed as a “beast” by journalist Sacha Pisani following Australia’s win over Tunisia at the World Cup, and he would be an excellent addition should Beale decide to move for him in the coming days.
They may well have to ship out Davies first, but it would surely be a worthwhile decision by the Gers.
