£33k-p/w Rangers Man Slammed After Old Firm Loss

BBC pundit Chris Sutton has slammed "disgrace" Rangers attacker Alfredo Morelos amid his poor showing in the club's recent defeat.

What's the latest on Alfredo Morelos and Rangers?

Michael Beale and co were unable to deliver the goods on the weekend as they crashed out of the Scottish Cup after losing 1-0 at Hampden Park.

Coming up against Old Firm rivals Celtic, a single goal from Jota was enough to decide the game with Ange Postecoglou and co now progressing into the final.

With Rangers unable to hit the back of the net on the day, it's no shock that their attacking players have come in for some criticism.

However, when talking about the game on BBC Radio Show 606, Sutton singled out Morelos for his consistently poor performances.

The pundit said: “Truth is, Alfredo Morelos has been a really good player for Rangers at times.

"This season, he has been a disgrace. He's been overweight. And he's offered very, very little.”

How bad was Alfredo Morelos against Celtic?

It's fair to say others were also in agreement that the £33k-p/w striker wasn't at his best in the Old Firm semi-final encounter.

For instance, in the Glasgow Times player ratings, writers Harry Mail and Lewis Anderson handed him a 3/10 and wrote: "The striker failed to show up again. With his contract up in the summer, is his time at Ibrox nearly over?"

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos

As pointed out above, Morelos will see his current deal expire when the season comes to an end so perhaps his mind is elsewhere. After all, he has just two goals in his last nine league outings.

For a guy who has netted 124 goals in 267 outings for Rangers, while also claiming 58 assists, it's certainly fair to suggest he hasn't really been firing on all cylinders confidently in recent times.

And when you look at the whole Gers squad, he is way down in 11th for average match performance rating in the Scottish Premiership and has even been outscored by right-back James Tavernier (via WhoScored).

All in all, it wasn't a good day for the 26-year-old who was eventually hooked in the 83rd minute of the game. And while it remains to be seen if he wants to stay at Ibrox, perhaps manager Beale won't even want to offer him a new contract if his performances don't start to pick up soon.

37 y/o Mooted For Spurs Manager Job

Journalist Alasdair Gold has stated that he likes the idea of Tottenham Hotspur taking a big gamble and hiring Vincent Kompany as manager.

What is the latest on Vincent Kompany and Spurs?

Having seen Antonio Conte depart and his assistant Cristian Stellini fail to really steady the ship, it's clear Spurs need to get it right with their next appointment.

Indeed, the Premier League outfit look to be a bit of a mess right now – the resignation of Fabio Paratici a testament to this – and if the wrong person comes in as their new head coach, things in north London could turn very toxic next term.

A number of high-profile names have been linked over the past few weeks. For instance, former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann has been on the club's radar.

But it remains to be seen who exactly Daniel Levy and co will try and bring to Spurs. While talking about it all on his YouTube channel, however, Gold touted one interesting name.

Indeed, he said: "I like the idea of Vincent Kompany, although very much I think he's probably one of the biggest gambles out there in that regard.

"Although, sounds like he's on the Chelsea shortlist as well."

Will Spurs hire Vincent Kompany?

It certainly is a glowing endorsement of what Kompany has achieved with Burnley this season – getting them promoted from the Championship in record time – to have Chelsea also interested in his services.

Although, with Todd Boehly calling the shots in West London, that interest from the Blues doesn't necessarily mean that much these days.

Regardless, it's easy to see why the 37-year-old is building a reputation as one of the most promising managers in England right now.

What's more, The Sun has gone on the record to say that Kompany is a "leading contender" for the Spurs job. So it seems as though he could be genuinely considered.

Vincent Kompany

At the same time, however, he is still fairly inexperienced – having taken charge of just 51 matches in England – and so it would be a big risk to appoint the Belgian.

Ideally, Spurs could wait to see how he gets on as a Premier League manager next season with Burnley. But of course, they can hardly wait around a year without hiring their own new head coach.

And so, if they do make a move for Kompany, it will be a bit of a leap of faith. Who knows, though, maybe he'd be worth it.

Chelsea Interested In Signing £60m Premier League Star

Chelsea has been named one of the clubs monitoring Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister.

What’s the latest on Alexis Mac Allister to Chelsea?

According to Fabrizio Romano, the World Cup winner is definitely leaving the South Coast this summer and Chelsea have been “interested, but it's not a priority.”

As per the briefing, rivals Liverpool are currently leading the race for the 24-year-old and have already had a direct meeting to present their project and plan to the player.

After Jude Bellingham’s proposed move to Real Madrid, the Reds are set to enhance their chase for Mac Allister.

However, considering the excessive spending of the new Blues ownership, they cannot be discounted, and the midfielder, who is valued at £60m, would be an excellent addition to a side crying out for a rebuild.

Who could Alexis Mac Allister replace at Chelsea?

The £50k-per-week man arrived in the Premier League in 2019 from Argentinos Juniors as a relatively unknown quantity but is now one of the country's most sought-after and consistent players.

The 16-cap international – whose current contract expires in 2025 – was catapulted into worldwide stardom as he played a pivotal role in his nation’s World Cup success, having played in six of the seven games with two goal contributions.

His performances generated much acclaim and Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero labelled the player as "very intelligent."

Domestically, the form has been replicated and the Argentine star has averaged 2.1 tackles per game, a 68% dribble success, and an 88% pass completion to become a fantastic all-rounder.

Alexis-Mac-Allister-Brighton

He is an integral cog of a massively over-achieving Brighton side and has the third-highest rating (7.2) of the squad, as per Sofascore.

This prestigious resume means that Chelsea is sniffing around this tremendous talent, and he could be the ideal replacement for Mateo Kovacic, who is reportedly edging close to an exit from Stamford Bridge.

The Croatian has endured a hugely tricky season and appears a shadow of his former self. The 28-year-old has averaged a horrendous average rating of 6.77, with just the 18th-highest rating on the team.

Compared to Mac Allister, he ranks poorly, making just 1.4 tackles per game and registering a pass accuracy of 86%. It's in attack, however, where there are huge disparities. The Argentine has managed 2.6 shots and 1.2 key passes, whereas the Chelsea dud only manages 0.9 for both metrics.

The former Real Madrid man’s deal runs out in 2024 and the Blues may choose to cash in to avoid losing him on a free next summer and make room for Mac Allister.

The technician is an engaging and attractive prospect, who has appeared across the midfield and has already cemented his legacy by assisting Ángel Di María in the World Cup Final against France.

Although he isn't a priority, welcoming Mac Allister to the club would still be an unbelievable first step in a rebuild for the incoming Mauricio Pochettino.

Everton: Club plotting move for Tyrese Campbell

Everton are reportedly lining up a move for Championship forward Tyrese Campbell, regardless of whether they survive the threat of Premier League relegation, according to a report.

What's the latest on Everton and Campbell?

The Toffees are aiming to bring in some additional firepower, following a January window in which Anthony Gordon departed and no reinforcements arrived.

Sean Dyche's side are in serious danger of relegation, and they may not be able to plan most of their summer business until they know their fate.

However, they have targeted Stoke City forward Campbell as a player they would like to sign regardless of which division they are in.

The 23-year-old has scored nine and assisted six times in all competitions this season, and can play in a variety of attacking positions.

A report from Football Insider has claimed that Everton are "growing increasingly confident" that they can secure a deal for the Englishman, and that they value him for his attacking talent as well as his experience in the Championship.

Would Campbell be a good signing for Everton?

At 23, he is a player with a fair amount of experience under his belt, having made 139 appearances for Stoke, but also has room to develop.

If Everton stay up, signing an attacker with fewer than ten goals in a lower division would hardly seem an inspiring deal after years of underwhelming transfers, but he could definitely prove to be a useful squad option.

The son of former Goodison hero Kevin Campbell, the left-footed attacker's versatility could make him a useful asset in a squad which has struggled for goals this season.

Demarai Gray is Everton's top scorer this term with just six goals, whilst central strikers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Neal Maupay have both been underwhelming in attack when available, scoring just once each.

The Toffees are the lowest scorers in the league, with just 25 goals in 33 games, and any extra attacking input would be welcome into the side.

If they do go down, the squad will likely need a massive overhaul, and signing a player who has thrived at times in the Championship could set them up well for what could be a difficult campaign in the second tier.

Campbell would be able to play through the middle alongside the likes of Gray or Dwight McNeil, or replace either winger and form an attack with an out-and-out No 9.

If a deal for Campbell can be wrapped up early in the window, it would allow the club to focus on other targets, safe in the knowledge that they have at least one body through the door following last January's disappointments.

Tottenham: "Unbelievable" Boss Holds Advantage For Spurs Job

Tottenham Hotspur managerial candidate Vincent Kompany has a friend at Spurs who'll be 'pushing the merits of him'.

What's the latest on Kompany to Spurs?

The 37-year-old is thought to be a real target for chairman Daniel Levy as he continues the search for a new permanent manager. Antonio Conte left the club last month, with Cristian Stellini and assistant coach Ryan Mason taking charge until the end of this Premier League campaign.

The latter duo are tasked with sealing a top four finish and Champions League qualification, no easy feat, yet it could seriously determine which elite coaches will be attracted by the idea of joining Spurs.

There have already been reports that other candidates, like former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, see Europe as a deal-breaker.

Vincent Kompany

In the event Tottenham cannot tempt names like Nagelsmann, the other solution is hiring a young, exciting project manager to build them from the ground up – and Kompany arguably fits the bill.

His Burnley side have stormed to automatic promotion this season and could still become one of the few Championship teams to reach over 100 points in a single campaign. There have even been some suggestions that Levy views Kompany as a top target after being blown away by his work at Turf Moor.

As per reliable journalist Alasdair Gold, responding in a football.london Q&A to the links with Kompany, Man City's legendary former captain has a colleague at Spurs, Simon Davies, who is head of methodology. The pair worked together at both City and Anderlecht, and Gold believes Davies will be 'pushing the merits' of him at Tottenham.

"Spurs have certainly considered Vincent Kompany and he's someone that Simon Davies, who works at the club's head of coaching methodology, knows well from their time together at City and Anderlecht, and he would be pushing the merits of him," explained the reporter.

"It would also be a gamble, with the 37-year-old having not managed in a major top flight division yet. He may well want to see what he can do with Burnley next season in the Premier League and watching clubs might want to wait to see how he does first. Of course you could miss out via that route.

"I would say the closest thing Spurs have to Arteta is probably Ryan Mason, if you're looking at a young former player who has only had assistant manager experience thus far (other than those seven matches in charge in 2021)."

Should Kompany go to Spurs?

While Kompany has experienced real joy as manager of Burnley this season, taking them back to the big time at their first attempt, he should also weigh his next move carefully.

Serial winners like Jose Mourinho and Conte have gone to Spurs in recent years only too, ultimately, go away trophy-less with a small dent in their reputations.

Kompany's stock is high right now, having been called 'unbelievable' by the media in Lancashire, and we believe he would be better placed remaining at Burnley to help continue their real momentum.

Man Utd Backed To Sign £93k-A-Week England International

Manchester United are more likely to sign Tammy Abraham than Dusan Vlahovic this summer, according to transfer expert Dean Jones.

Is Abraham shining for Roma this season?

The Englishman has been at Roma since 2021, having moved to Italy from Chelsea after not being promised regular playing time at Stamford Bridge. The £93,000-a-week attacker has impressed there overall, scoring 36 goals in 99 appearances, as well as registering 12 assists.

This season, Abraham hasn't been quite as effective, however, scoring just eight times in 33 Serie A outings, and it could be that Jose Mourinho is happy to see him leave at the end of the current campaign. United are one of the clubs who have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old, as they look to bring in an out-and-out striker who is an upgrade on both Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst this summer.

It is a key position for the Red Devils to improve in, in order to go up a level next season, and a new update has emerged regarding the situation.

Tammy Abraham for AS Roma

Could Abraham make switch to Man United?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones said that Abraham is more likely to move to Old Trafford than Juventus attacker Vlahovic, although he didn't confirm that there is clear interest from United:

"So I'm not wholly convinced that this is able to happen. To be honest, if I was to predict a Serie A striker to move to Old Trafford, I'd probably go with Tammy Abraham ahead of Dušan Vlahović at this point."

While Abraham is clearly a good striker – one who has been described as "outstanding" by journalist Henry Winter in the recent past – but United need to look at players who are a level up from him, when it comes to acquiring the services of an elite attacker this summer.

The three-goal England international isn't at the world-class standard of fellow United targets Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen, for example, both of whom are relentless providers of goals and could help the Reds become Premier League title challengers next season.

Abraham would be a good backup option, but for the money he would likely cost, they would be better off bringing in a cheaper alternative for that squad role, and going big on either Kane or Osimhen. The fact that the former Chelsea man has had a below-par season also suggests his bubble may have burst at the very top level, despite still only being 25.

Table-topping Lions start as underdogs in RCB's fortress

Match facts

Tuesday, May 24, 2016
Start time 2000 local (1430 GMT)

Big Picture

How do you beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bangalore? How do you do this when they’ve won four games on the trot? How do you do this when, in those four matches, Virat Kohli has scored 109, 75*, 113 and 54*? And how do you beat that scary, Kohli-powered Royal Challengers side, on their own turf, when your last attempt at doing so resulted in the worst defeat in all IPL matches, by a brutal 144 runs? Those questions will preoccupy Gujarat Lions as they prepare for Tuesday’s Qualifier 1. It is unusual for a table-topping team, who are one win from a place in a final, to seem like underdogs, but that is what Lions are.For a table-topping team, Lions have had a strange sort of season, with only Kings XI Punjab, the bottom team, ending the league stage with a worse net run rate than them. It reflects the fact that Lions have suffered a few heavy defeats – including that mauling at Royal Challengers’ hands – and won some exceedingly tight games, with three of their matches going down to the last ball. But the fact that Lions won all three of those last-ball finishes, as well as their one other match that went into the last over, would also suggest they have won the clutch moments, a welcome quality in any team.Lions will need to summon up all that clutch ability – though readers of will helpfully point out that it is a myth – on Tuesday, and come up with some sort of plan to contain – or somehow outscore – Royal Challengers’ batting line-up.This is T20, of course, and all you need is one good day – a blazing opening stand, perhaps, with Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch taking apart what is still, despite a couple of encouraging recent displays, an average Royal Challengers bowling attack; or a Suresh Raina special; or a new-ball burst that leaves the home team two down early, with Kohli one of the two batsmen dismissed, and AB de Villiers, maybe, the other. These things can happen. Lions will certainly hope they can.

Form guide

In the spotlight

Given the Chinnaswamy’s small boundaries and flat pitch, an ability to move the ball through the air is priceless. Praveen Kumar has that ability, and the street-smarts to bowl to one of the most imposing T20 line-ups ever assembled. He comes into the Qualifier with a bit of form behind him: he’s gone for six an over or less in three of his last four matches. The one match when he did go for runs, however, was against Royal Challengers, in Bangalore – his figures read 4-1-45-2, and Gujarat Lions conceded 248.Yuzvendra Chahal has found a place in India’s ODI and T20 squads for their tour of Zimbabwe, but before he can celebrate, he will need to produce another spell of wicket-taking legspin with his home venue stacking the odds against him. With two left-handers in their top six in Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja, Gujarat Lions may plan to target Chahal and, if he plays, Iqbal Abdulla as well.

Team news

Dale Steyn has played only one match this season, and James Faulkner only seven, with his last appearance coming on May 3. It will be a difficult decision for Gujarat Lions to play either of them, since their four regular overseas players have all done well of late. But it is a sacrifice they may have to contemplate, if they want to strengthen their bowling against the best batting line-up in the tournament. It seems unlikely to happen, though. Likelier is the inclusion of Ishan Kishan, a left-hand batsman, in place of Eklavya Dwivedi, in order to go after the legspin of Yuzvendra Chahal and/or the left-arm spin of Iqbal Abdulla.Gujarat Lions: 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Brendon McCullum, 3 Suresh Raina (capt), 4 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 5 Dwayne Smith, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Eklavya Dwivedi/Ishan Kishan, 9 Praveen Kumar, 10 Dhawal Kulkarni, 11 Shadab Jakati/Shivil Kaushik/Pravin TambeRoyal Challengers tend to play an extra seamer rather than a second specialist spinner in their home games, which could mean Varun Aaron comes back in place of Iqbal Abdulla.Royal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Virat Kohli (capt), 3 AB de Villiers, 4 KL Rahul (wk), 5 Shane Watson, 6 Stuart Binny, 7 Sachin Baby, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 S Aravind, 10 Iqbal Abdulla/Varun Aaron, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal

Pitch and conditions

Teams know what to expect when they come to Bangalore – perfect batting conditions and short boundaries. In the eight matches played here so far this season, there has only been one first-innings score below 185. There have been intermittent showers in Bangalore over the last week or so, but no rain is forecast for Tuesday, with an expected high of 35 degrees Celsius.

Stats and trivia

  • Royal Challengers have hit 122 sixes this season, with Mumbai Indians a distant second on 92. Gujarat Lions have hit only 52 sixes – the fewest among all the teams – but have hit 208 fours, which is second to Royal Challengers’ 215
  • Lions (11.13) and Royal Challengers (10.71) have the worst economy rates in the last five overs among all teams this season
  • Royal Challengers’ batsmen have made up for this by scoring at 12.79 in the last five overs, while Lions have the worst last-five-overs run rate as well (8.67). They do, however, have the best Powerplay scoring rate, of 8.75
  • Dhawal Kulkarni and Dwayne Smith are both three short of 100 T20 wickets

Ashish Nehra out of IPL with hamstring injury

Ashish Nehra has been ruled out of the rest of the IPL with a hamstring injury. A press release from the franchise said he sustained it while playing against Kings XI Punjab last Sunday

ESPNcricinfo staff19-May-20163:24

Sunrisers Hyderabad lose Nehra’s services

Ashish Nehra has been ruled out of the rest of the IPL with a hamstring injury. The 37-year old fast bowler had been one of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s key players, with nine wickets from eight matches at an average of 22.11 and an economy rate of 7.65.Sunrisers have to win at least one of their two remaining matches – against Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders – to make the playoffs. Losing Nehra, who has swung the new ball and picked up early wickets, will affect their first-choice XI.A press release from the franchise said Nehra “sustained a significant hamstring tendon injury during the match against Kings XI Punjab on May 15.”Ashish Nehra is now in consultation with a specialist orthopedic surgeon for the most appropriate course of treatment to ensure a successful return to competitive cricket. Unfortunately he will play no further part in the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League for Sunrisers Hyderabad.”It is the second time he has broken down this season. Nehra had missed four matches with a groin strain that he picked up in early April. In terms of replacements, Sunrisers may opt for another left-arm quick Barinder Sran, who has picked up nine wickets from nine matches.
