Celtic: Kyle Edwards update emerges

Celtic have stepped up their plans to sign former West Brom winger Kyle Edwards this summer, according to Football Insider.

Edwards, who is now a free agent after his Baggies deal expired on July 1, was linked with a move to Celtic last December.

The 23-year-old was wanted on loan by the Hoops back then, but the club’s only winter window addition was Everton’s Jonjoe Kenny.

Celtic were working on a cut-price deal for Edwards earlier this week, and there has now been a further development.

The Latest: Source shares update

According to Football Insider, who have been informed by a Celtic source, the Hoops are now negotiating personal terms with Edwards. The Parkhead club are set to offer the winger a contract, with Ange Postecoglou having given the thumbs-up to a swoop for the free agent.

Should Edwards move to Glasgow, Celtic would have to pay West Brom around £300,000 in compensation- a third of his Transfermarkt valuation.

The Verdict: Worth a gamble

Celtic are aware of rival interest from a number of English clubs, so a cut-price move appears to be worth a gamble.

The Hoops could do with wide additions following Mohamed Elyounoussi’s return to Southampton, leaving them with just James Forrest, Mikey Johnston and Maryan Shved as wingers, with Edwards capable of playing on either side.

He showed flashes of brilliance for West Brom last season and is described as a very strong dribbler by WhoScored, so his direct approach could come in handy during Postecoglou’s first season in charge.

How Chelsea should line up for the 2023-24 season: Moises Caicedo would be a transformative presence for the Blues

Chelsea are finally closing in on the midfielder despite Liverpool's best efforts – and it's just as well, because he will be intrinsic to their style

A new era in Chelsea's storied history gets underway in earnest as the 2023-24 season begins. The squad and indeed the coaching staff are unrecognisable from the group that ended 2022-23 at Stamford Bridge, with the club evidently desperate to consign a nightmare campaign to the history books.

Chelsea's unprecedented summer clear-out and a smattering of new arrivals means new head coach Mauricio Pochettino inherits a rejuvenated – if incomplete – Blues squad, with muted anticipation for a more successful season ahead. Indeed, the only way is surely up.

But how will Argentine tactician set up his side in what will be a watershed period in the Blues' modern history? GOAL runs through what should be his go-to line-up below…

  • Getty

    GK: Kepa Arrizabalaga

Pochettino has a sudden selection headache following the £25 million ($32m) arrival of Robert Sanchez from Brighton, but – for the time being, at least – it makes sense to stick with Kepa Arrizabalaga.

There's no guarantee he will be the long-term first choice, especially amid links with Bayern Munich, but Kepa offers a modicum of continuity amid the unprecedented upheaval. Aside from a few lapses, Kepa was much improved last season, with a 73% save percentage in the league and a post-shot xG minus goals allowed of +5, which meant he ranked third among Premier League goalkeepers in the most reliable metric for measuring shot-stopping ability.

Sanchez, on the other hand, lost his place at Brighton and slipped to third in the pecking order.

Pochettino has already suggested Kepa is his No.1 for the moment: "They know they are going to fight for the No.1. At the moment, Kepa is a little bit ahead. With time, we will see if Robert is there and can challenge Kepa."

    RB: Reece James

A no-brainer on the right side of defence. Reece James is Chelsea's new club captain and, barring any further fitness issues on the horizon, he is a guaranteed starter.

Pochettino does prefer a 4-2-3-1 shape and there is an argument that James is not at his best in a flat back-four given his potency as an attacking wing-back. New signing Malo Gusto will also provide him with stiff competition and quality cover.

However, James is arguably the Blues' best player, and the added responsibility of the captaincy means he should be the first name on the team sheet.

  • Getty

    CB: Thiago Silva

The swansong begins. In what will likely be his final season at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will once again rely heavily upon the defensive nous and immeasurable experience of Thiago Silva.

Unsurprisingly, the 38-year-old phenomenon remained one of the club's most consistent performers throughout a turbulent 2022-23 campaign, and as a serial winner he will be determined to right the wrongs of last season on the pitch before bidding an emotional farewell to the Blues.

Indeed, he will also be crucial in being an on-field mentor for his young centre-back partner…

    CB: Levi Colwill

Chelsea clung on to their latest outstanding academy graduate for dear life and finally managed to tie him down to a new long-term contract. Now it's time to back him.

He initially had to fight for his place in the team, but Levi Colwill eventually made his Premier League breakthrough on loan at Brighton in 2022-23 and he has proven that he is ready for the top level.

Given they have no European football to contend with and following the serious knee injury to Wesley Fofana, Pochettino should throw Colwill in at the deep end at left centre-back and build for the future. He has all the attributes to become a club legend.

Chelsea striker Sam Kerr, Aston Villa's Rachel Daly and Man City star Bunny Shaw among six nominees for prestigious Women's PFA Players' Player of the Year award

Chelsea's Sam Kerr looks to retain her title, but team-mate Guro Reiten and four other top players stand in her path

The PFA Awards have been a highlight of the footballing calendar for 50 years, and the organisation have now revealed the shortlist for the 2023 Women's Players' Player of the Year, with six brilliant players fighting it out for the gong.

Chelsea's Sam Kerr returns in an attempt to retain her title, while the Blues' Norwegian star Guro Reiten also finds herself as a nominee. The west London club have had a player win the award four out of the last five years.

Former Manchester United star Ona Batlle, who just reached the World Cup final with Spain, is also nominated along with Manchester City and Jamaican sensation Bunny Shaw, while Aston Villa's Rachel Daly and Arsenal's Frida Maanum close out the nominees.

Chelsea's Australian striker returns on the ballot sheet in an attempt to retain her title as the PFA Women's Players' Player of the Year. Kerr scored 29 goals across 38 appearances in all competitions for the Blues during the 2022/23 campaign, earning Chelsea's Player of the Year award en route to becoming a WSL champion for the fourth-straight season.

Rachel Daly | Club: Aston Villa | Nationality: England

Leading scorer of the 2022/23 WSL campaign, Daly notched 22 goals in league play and 30 in total across all competitions. Daly was named WSL Player of the Season following her terrific 2022/23 campaign, which also saw Aston Villa reach their first-ever FA Cup semi-final.

Guro Reiten | Club: Chelsea FC | Nationality: Norway

Reiten's brilliant 2022/23 campaign saw her win the FA Cup with Chelsea and top it off with a WSL title for the fourth-straight season. The Norway international had 13 goals and 19 assists across all competitions for the Blues and was particularly important when Kerr was absent through injury.

The 2022/23 season was an outstanding campaign for Shaw, who scored 31 goals across all competitions while adding nine assists along the way for Manchester City. The 26-year-old attacker extended her contract in May through to 2026 after her record-setting season.

England U21s player ratings vs Germany: Chelsea's Noni Madueke runs the show & Liverpool's Harvey Elliott scores a stunner as Young Lions send holders packing

England dominated Germany in their final Under-21 European Championship group game, winning 2-0 and dumping the holders out of the competition.

England's Young Lions made it three 2-0 wins from three group games as they defeated holders Germany on Wednesday night, knocking the holders out of the competition in the process.

Germany came into the game knowing they would have to win but found themselves 1-0 down within four minutes, as Cameron Archer latched onto Jacob Ramsey's superb through ball and finished coolly into the bottom corner.

A second was added just 20 minutes later, when Harvey Elliott powered his way into the box and finished off a superb solo run with aplomb.

England were not properly tested for the remainder of the 90 minutes, dominating possession and creating chances at will. They will march on to play Portugal in the quarter-finals.

Germany were blunt, and did not seem to be at the level of the Young Lions.

GOAL rates England's players from the international clash…

  • Getty

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    James Trafford (6/10):

Made one superb save in the first half to keep out a goal-bound header. His distribution left something to be desired but, when called upon, he made his saves with a minimum of fuss and earned his clean sheet.

    Ben Johnson (6/10):

Never challenged at right-back and was able to get forward too, prior to his substitution.

    Charlie Cresswell (6/10):

Germany were blunt in attack, and both Cresswell and Branthwaite had a simple evening.

    Jarrad Branthwaite (7/10):

Never really stretched, much like Cresswell, but did his job in a straightforward manner, making one excellent block.

    Luke Thomas (6/10):

Comfortable at left-back and was able to deliver some excellent crosses.

  • Getty

    Midfield

    Oliver Skipp (6/10):

Does the dirty work in midfield exceptionally well, and mopped up plenty of German attacks, even if he didn't impact the game all that much in the final third.

    Jacob Ramsey (7/10):

Superb through ball played Archer in for his opening goal and kept bursting through the lines. Germany could not handle him before his substitution.

    Cole Palmer (5/10):

Wasn't as involved as some of his team-mates but some neat touches, and consistently showed for the ball.

  • Getty

    Attack

    Noni Madueke (8/10):

Dominated down the right flank at times, torturing the German backline, until his substitution. A livewire who created chances almost every time he received the ball.

    Cameron Archer (7/10):

Scored after just three minutes with a cool finish when one-on-one. Always a willing runner, and while he snatched at a few chances, he was a menace up front before being substituted for Anthony Gordon.

    Harvey Elliott (7/10):

Scored a brilliant solo goal to make it 2-0, as he accelerated into the penalty box and finished into the bottom corner. Always wants the ball, and tracked back dutifully too.

    Subs & Manager

    Emile Smith Rowe (5/10):

Replaced the impressive Madueke. Could not match the brilliant Chelsea star but didn't get an awful lot of the ball.

    Max Aarons (6/10):

Came on for Ben Johnson. Did his work.

    James Garner (6/10):

Replaced Ramsey and kept possession ticking.

    Anthony Gordon (7/10)

On for Archer and almost immediately created a chance. An impressive cameo.

    Lee Carsley (8/10):

Got his tactics spot on. England made plenty of chances and played some genuinely lovely football. A great day at the office.

Celtic: Hoops now working on Nisbet move

Celtic are now interested in signing Hibernian striker Kevin Nisbet, according to The Daily Mail’s Stephen McGowan.

The Lowdown: Nisbet’s impressive campaign

Nisbet enjoyed a successful 2020/21 season at Easter Road. The 24-year-old scored 18 times and registered eight assists in all competitions, with two of his goals coming against the Hoops.

His displays were rewarded with a place in Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for the European Championships.

Nisbet, who Jack Ross described as ‘terrific’ last year, featured in just 21 minutes of action at Euro 2020 and currently holds a Transfermarkt valuation of £2.7m.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-7/” title=”Celtic updates” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

According to McGowan, Celtic have now set their sights on Nisbet after announcing a deal for defender Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday on Thursday.

Work has already begun to see how much a potential transfer would cost, with Hibs thought to be holding out for more than £4m.

The Verdict: Wyke or Nisbet?

Another striker who has been heavily linked with a Celtic Park switch in recent weeks is Charlie Wyke.

Wyke, who is now out of contract with former employers Sunderland, wanted Celtic to double his wages on a four-year deal with a multi-million pound signing-on fee.

A move for Wyke has gone quiet in recent days, and perhaps Nisbet would be a smarter option.

He’s four years youngster than Wyke and has experience of scoring goals in the Scottish Premiership.

Nisbet is on £1,000-a-week at Hibs, compared to Wyke’s recent £6,400-a-week salary with Sunderland.

Yes, Celtic would have to pay a fee for Nisbet and not Wyke, but it could prove to be a wise move, should they decide to do so.

Erling Haaland, William Saliba and GOAL's Under-23 Team of the Season for 2022-23

GOAL picks out the top young performers from across Europe's 'Big Five' leagues over the past 10 months

One of the best things about any season is watching young players take the game by storm – and the 2022-23 campaign has been no different in that regard. Obviously, we all knew that Erling Haaland was pretty damn special before signing for Manchester City, but even the man himself has been amazed by the sheer volume of goals he has scored since moving to the Premier League last summer.

Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka have also been considered superstars-in-the-making for some time now, but which other Under-23s took their games to another level this season?

GOAL picks out the best young players across Europe's 'Big Five' leagues over the past 10 months, and given there are bound to be some close and controversial calls, feel free to let us know your own line-ups in the comments below…

  • Getty Images

    GK: Marco Carnesecchi (Cremonese)

It's not been an easy season for Marco Carnesecchi. During a loan spell at Cremonese, the Atalanta-owned goalkeeper has been given little protection by the second-worst defence in Serie A, statistically-speaking.

However, Carnesecchi has managed to forge a reputation as one of the best young shot-stoppers in Italy, with 111 saves and, even more impressively, a save percentage of 69.4 percent – which is better than that of Liverpool ace Alisson (68.5%).

Consequently, the 22-year-old is now being linked with a summer move to Juventus, who are reportedly considering offloading Wojciech Szczesny.

  • Getty

    RB: Jeremie Frimpong (Bayer Leverkusen)

Manchester United are reportedly leading the chase to sign Jeremie Frimpong this summer, and that's not in the least bit surprising. Erik ten Hag needs a right-back that offers more going forward than either Diogo Dalot or Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and the Bayer Leverkusen speedster certainly fits the bill.

Frimpong, who has sometimes played on the wing, has run riot this season, directly involved in 19 goals in all competitions, scoring nine himself. Don't be surprised if United end up paying a hefty fee for the 22-year-old Dutchman, who came through the youth system at Man City.

  • Getty Images

    CB: William Saliba (Arsenal)

It's highly likely that Manchester City would have eventually overhauled Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table no matter what. Pep Guardiola simply had a deeper and stronger squad at his disposal than Mikel Arteta.

And yet one cannot help but wonder what might have happened had the Gunners not lost William Saliba to injury. Arsenal kept just two clean sheets after the Frenchman suffered a season-ending back injury in March, and both of those arrived after the momentum had shifted completely in City's favour.

Hardly surprising, then, that the Gunners are now doing "everything we can" to convince the centre-half to sign a new contract after belatedly making a massive impact at the Emirates after spending the previous two-and-a-half seasons out on loan.

CB: Matthijs de Ligt (Bayern Munich)

There is no denying that Matthijs de Ligt disappointed at Juventus. The former Ajax captain played well at times but became worryingly error-prone. And yet there was always the nagging feeling that he was simply a bad fit for Juve. And so it proved.

Bayern Munich may not have made many good signings last summer, which led to the dismissal of sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, but De Ligt eventually became the key man in a title-winning defence.

The 23-year-old didn't just make a difference with his perfectly-timed tackles and interventions, either; he also chipped in with a couple of crucial goals during the run-in, against Stuttgart and Freiburg.

Palmer: Gilmour would keep things ticking over at Southampton

Chelsea and Scotland star Billy Gilmour is the sort of midfielder that would keep things ticking over at Southampton, says former player Carlton Palmer.

Gilmour could be available for loan this summer, with The Athletic recently reporting that newly-promoted Norwich City are looking to bring him in but are likely to face Premier League competition.

The 20-year-old stole the show when Scotland took on England at Euro 2020, winning Star of the Match in the 0-0 draw, before missing his country’s final game against Croatia after testing positive for Covid-19.

Asked if Gilmour, who completed the most passes for Scotland in that fixture versus England (via WhoScored), could be perfect for a team like Southampton, Palmer told FFC:

“For sure, for sure. I mean, the one thing you have to do in the Premier League, you have to be able to retain the football. It’s not like the Championship. You can’t get possession and give the ball away because against the better sides, you won’t get the ball back and they’ll do damage to you.

“So if you can get somebody who can keep the ball moving, keep it ticking over, keep possession, be progressive, then obviously it fits.”

As he showed with his display at Wembley, Gilmour is capable of doing just that. Southampton were also in the top eight last season for average possession so, all in all, the Scottish youngster looks like a good fit for the south coast club.

Pundit doesn’t think Crystal Palace should appoint Eddie Howe

Marcus Bent has described Eddie Howe as one of the top up-and-coming managers but doesn’t believe Crystal Palace is the right fit for him.

Howe has been strongly linked to several managerial vacancies since leaving Bournemouth following their relegation last July, but is still a free agent after his move to Celtic recently fell through despite months of ongoing talks at Parkhead.

One of those jobs is Palace, who are still on the search for a Roy Hodgson replacement after Nuno Espirito Santo’s swift return to the Premier League collapsed earlier this week.

But Bent is concerned that Howe, who was once tipped for one of the top Premier League jobs by Pep Guardiola, doesn’t fit the bill at Palace, who’re likely to be working on a tight budget this summer, with a considerable rebuild required at Selhurst Park following several first-team players being released, plenty of which are experienced faces.

The former Palace frontman told The Transfer Tavern:

“I see him as one of the top up-and-coming managers, although he’s been on the scene for six or seven years now.

“The Celtic job didn’t work. Crystal Palace maybe isn’t the right job –  the style of football, the budget and top players like Zaha leaving, although he might be able to start again and refresh the side.”

Gareth Southgate's team beat reigning European champions Italy in their qualification opener. They will be confident of getting three points against Ukraine although the visitors have not been easy to beat in the past.

Ukraine last played a game in September 2022 as they had missed out on a trip to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup. They have caused England trouble when the two teams met several years ago and will be hoping to take points off the Three Lions on Sunday.

    Team analysis

    England team news

    England predicted XI

Pickford; James, Stones, Maguire, Chilwell; Henderson, Phillips, Rice; Saka, Kane, Foden.

    Recent form

England registered a confidence-boosting comeback victory against defending champions Italy in their previous outing. It was a much-needed win for Southgate after the team's World Cup 2022 heartbreak.

    Key players

Kane wrote his name into the history books by becoming his country's all-time leading goalscorer, surpassing Rooney's tally of 53 goals. He has been excellent for his club Tottenham as well, with 21 goals this season. Ukraine's defence will need to stop Kane if they are to get something out of this fixture.

    Injuries & suspensions

Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount and Nick Pope had pulled out from the England camp due to injuries and will play no part against Ukraine.

Luke Shaw was shown a red card in the game against Italy and will miss the game on Sunday. Jude Bellingham will also need to be assessed on matchday.

    Tactical approach

With plenty of attacking talent at his disposal and confidence from their win over Italy, England will once again be expected to be dominant against Ukraine and bag a comfortable win.

    Position Players
    Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale
Defenders: Ben Chilwell, Eric Dier, Marc Guehi, Reece James, Harry Maguire, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker
Midfielders: Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, Jordan Henderson, James Maddison, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice
Forwards: Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney

    June 20, 2012 England 1-0 Ukraine Euro
October 10, 2009 Ukraine 1-0 England World Cup qualifier

    Ukraine team news

    Ukraine predicted XI

Lunin; Konoplya, Matvienko, Popov, Mykolenko; Malinovskyi, Stepanenko, Zinchenko; Tsygankov, Dovbyk, Mudryk

    Recent form

Ukraine failed to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar. However, they lost only twice in their last 16 outings since 2021. They finished second in their UEFA Nations League group and will be confident of getting a result at the Wembley Stadium.

    Key players

Chelsea's £89m man Mykhailo Mudryk will have the opportunity to be in the limelight in his first game for the country since his Premier League move. He has failed to get going with the Blues but this would be a chance to show what he's capable of.

    Injuries & suspensions

For Ukraine, Bournemouth centre-back Ilya Zabarnyi will be unavailable for selection alongside midfielder Oleksandr Zubkov as they are both out injured.

Former West Ham man Andriy Yarmolenko is also out with an injury.

    Tactical approach

Ukraine will aim to be solid at the back against a potentially dominant English side. They will want to use pace up front to cause issues in the final third via counter-attacks. In their own half, the defence needs to mark the in-form Harry Kane out of the game.

    Position Players
Goalkeepers: Andriy Lunin, Anatoly Trubin, Dmytro Riznyk
Defenders: Oleksandr Karavaev, Mykola Matvienko, Yukhym Konoplia, Vitaly Mykolenko, Ilya Zabarny, Eduard Sobol, Oleksandr Svatok, Eduard Sarapiy

    England vs Ukraine match preview

    Venue, date & kick-off time

The Euro 2024 qualifier between England and Ukraine will be played at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday, March 26. The game is scheduled to kick off at 5pm BST (1pm EDT).

    Match predictions & expected outcome

England will be high on confidence heading into the game after their win over Italy. However, Ukraine has managed to hold the Three Lions to a draw twice in the last five meetings between the two teams. England's confidence and superior squad should take them across the finish line in this one.

Key battles to watch out for

We could get to see two Chelsea stars battle it out on one side of the pitch if James and Mudryk are featured. Mudryk has a point to prove at the global level at this point in his career and James is a difficult full-back to get past for any tricky winger.

    Potential game changers

With 54 goals for England, Harry Kane is in terrific form for club and country. He only needs to see a small gap in defence to grab a goal and change the game. Ukraine's centre-backs will be on high alert against the Tottenham striker throughout the game.

  • Getty Images

Our final thoughts on the match

    • England have failed to win against Italy twice in their last five fixtures.
    • Kane will be high in confidence after breaking the all-time scoring record for England
    • Ukraine has had some success against England in the past and will look to start 2023 with a big result.
