Everton fans on Celik transfer update

Many Everton fans have been left to plead for the Goodison Park faithful to sign Zeki Celik after a transfer update emerged.

As per L’Equipe (via The Toffee Blues), the Merseyside club as well as Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a move to sign the Lille right-back once the summer transfer window opens, with the player keen himself on a move to the Premier League.

Celik played a key part in his team snatching the 2020/21 Ligue 1 title off of the hands of PSG, scoring three goals and making a further three assists in 29 games in total (Transfermarkt).

At just 24 years of age, the Turkey international would be an ideal replacement in the longer term for 32-year-old Seamus Coleman, and so it is no surprise to see so many Toffees calling for his signature.

Weather in windy Wellington could play big role

Wellington’s weather, wet and windy, will have both the New Zealand and England camps pondering their options before play starts in the second National Bank Series Test at the Basin Reserve

Lynn McConnell20-Mar-2002Wellington’s weather, wet and windy, will have both the New Zealand and England camps pondering their options before play starts in the second National Bank Series Test at the Basin Reserve.Just when the Test will start is another matter of conjecture. Both teams were forced inside to complete their preparations before the scheduled start time of 10.30am tomorrow but rain is forecast for tomorrow, and even heavier rain in the long range forecast for Friday. The Basin pitch, which is a shadow of its former self, a tired, and prospectively slow and turning deck, is the only natural wicket in the series. It has provided several outright results in the local domestic competition, the State Championship.New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming said the knowledge of how the pitch plays would be the closest thing to home advantage in the series and while a wind would blow it was just as difficult for New Zealand to cope with as it was for opposing teams, the only benefit for New Zealand being its bowlers knew what to expect.”We’ve played on this wicket whereas at Jade Stadium we hadn’t played on that one.”But we know how this one, pretty much, will perform on the way the results have gone this summer and most players have played here this summer. It’s pretty much as home as it gets. This is our home of cricket,” he said.Just what the into-the-wind options would be were not definitely revealed by Fleming but he did say: “It depends which way the wind blows. It has suited Dan [Vettori] here, the amount of drift he can get in the last few Test matches but Nathan [Astle] also can do a job, but Chris Drum with the new ball will probably have that role.”Meanwhile, the match represents, much more than the first Test, a return to the bad old days of injury concerns with Chris Cairns out, Vettori under pressure with his back and now Fleming himself suffering after dislocating a finger at fielding training yesterday. The absence of Cairns has not made preparing for the match harder, and Fleming said if anything it had steeled the side up.”I’ve got a group of players that I believe can win the Test match and I believe, and openly said it in the first Test, that might not be the way to go, apparently, I still believe nothing’s changed and we’ll be playing the same type of cricket looking to win the Test match and the series.”Chris Cairns is a world-class player and we will miss him but often that puts responsibility on other people’s shoulders and they step up and that’s what I’m asking them to do.”Not having the first choice attack is a big disappointment because when they’re on song it is a very good Test attack.”We’ve been in this situation before and the players that have come into the side have performed for me in Test cricket in the past, last season against Pakistan, and I have confidence they will do it again.”They’re not probably as dynamic as some of the players we’ve lost but they bring strengths and qualities as well and that’s what I’ll tap into and that’s what they’ll tap into,” he said.New Zealand had absorbed the lessons from the first Test defeat.”There has been a look at the way we played the game. The side had fumbled through the first three and a half days and were disappointed in one of their areas of pride, their fielding. So they have been working on sharpening that area.”If we had taken our chances, [Nasser] Hussain in the first innings and [Graham] Thorpe in the second then the Test could quite easily have been a different scenario.”I’ve always found Jade Stadium a hard place to catch.”I’ve dropped two catches there that 90% of the time I would expect myself to catch and Nate [Astle] said the same.”It was one of those games that was tense also and you knew every ball had a significant outcome and I guess sometimes that frame of mind can get a little bit nervous and a little bit tighter in the hands.”Twelve months ago we had the same scenario and we’ve introduced some players who have Test experience and we can call on them now with them having the knowledge of what they need to do.”There are some qualities these players bring into the side that may be very important on this type of wicket,” he said.Fleming also commented on the heart surgery Lou Vincent had before the first Test.”That was a bit of a shock, Louie has had a bit of a racing heart for a while and he’s pretty active as it is. The ins and outs of the surgery were that it went well and his heart beat is back to normal.”It did seem rather dramatic when I heard Lou was going to be delayed coming to Christchurch because he was having heart surgery.”I knew the games were close but not like that. He seems fine, it went well,” he said.

WHU fans rage at Moyes snub

Some West Ham United fans were livid after Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher chose Pep Guardiola over David Moyes for Premier League Manager of the Year on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

Moyes has done a fantastic job with the Hammers this season. Last year the Irons were in danger of relegation, but this time around they have battled for a spot in the Champions League and, with three games left, they still have a chance of doing so.

While Manchester City are closing in on the Premier League title, they are expected to do so given the budget Guardiola has at his disposal – what Moyes has achieved is almost miraculous.

However, when discussing who should win the Premier League’s end of season awards, both Neville and Carragher went for Guardiola over Moyes. This did not go down well at all with plenty of West Ham supporters, some of whom took to social media platform Twitter to share their disappointment with the pundits’ decision.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Moyes snub below

“Moyes deserves manager of the season”

Credit: @addictedgamble9

“Moyes has to be manager of the season, we were 17th last year looking awful and with 3 signings no-one’s ever heard of he’s got us to challenging for champions league, legend.”

Credit: @SkirthLiam

Only two clubs out of 20 made a profit in the summer window, West Ham and Leicester City. Now look at the table. There’s absolutely no way Pep deserves to be picked as manager of the year over Moyes and Rodgers. @Carra23 and @GNev2 have both got this one wrong imo.

“Both stupid fools choosing Pep as manager of the year and really Cavani? Man U biased signing of the year is easily Coufal or Soucek, manager of the year Moyes easily!”

“just shows how little spotlight we get because we aren’t a big six team and don’t spend hundreds of millions every window”

“Pep’s taken a team backed by ridiculous amounts of money and done what he should be doing each year, Moyes has taken a team on the brink of relegation to battling for the CL – joke of a pick”

Barry Fry gives take on Mourinho exit

Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry insists Jose Mourinho was always going to be sacked by Tottenham Hotspur because of his style of football, telling Football FanCast that it was “only a matter of time”.

Spurs fired the Portuguese last week and replaced him temporarily with Ryan Mason, who will manage the team until the end of the season.

Spurs were seventh when Mourinho was sacked and had won one game in six, while also tumbling out of the Europa League as a result of a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.

Mason was subsequently in charge for the Carabao Cup final, though Spurs lost 1-0 to Manchester City at Wembley.

Mourinho oversaw a terrible run of form and he also sidelined a number of players, including Dele Alli, Harry Winks, and Gareth Bale.

Fry thinks that the former Manchester United boss has been too negative in both of his most recent jobs, in north London and at Old Trafford, and he was left unsurprised that chairman Daniel Levy took the decision to sack him.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, Fry said: “He picks fights with players, unnecessarily in my opinion. He plays too negative.

“He might be the best tactician the world’s ever known but Manchester United fans and Tottenham fans do not want to see their teams play the way he plays with them, especially with the attacking players both those teams have got.

“They want to see their team going forward, entertaining, scoring goals, that’s what they’ve been brought up on, that’s what they want, so it was only a matter of time before he left.”

Arindam Das, the next Prince of Kolkata?

He is the new wonder-kid on the blocks as far as Bengal cricket is concerned

Staff Reporter03-May-2001He is the new wonder-kid on the blocks as far as Bengal cricket is concerned. Arindam Das, according to many, is probably the best thing to have happened to Bengal cricket after Sourav Ganguly. The youngster has already proved his talent in the domestic season. Now he is all set to fly to the Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy at Adelaide in Australia for a stint of coaching. The Cricket Association of Bengal is sponsoring the entire trip.Das’ performance this season looks quite impressive. In 30 innings he played at various levels, Das has scored over 2,000 runs. He has an average of 100-plus in the Under-22 competition and 58.20 in the Cooch Behar Trophy. Nicknamed `Don’ by his colleagues the young Das is the first one to blush about it. “The name was given to me when I was three years old. It’s not meant to belittle anybody,” is his first comment. He has another one to offer after much prompting. “If Sourav Ganguly can make it to the top from Bengal, I am confidentthat I will also be able to do so. I am not one to crib about practice and other facilities.” Das started taking lessons in cricket when he was only six from former Bengal cricketer Pranab Nundy. He is also indebeted to Gopal Bose for giving him valuable batting lessons. As Bose said today, “Cricket is all about three Ts. Talent, Technique and Temperament. He has all the ingredients to don the national colours.”Das would have made his debut in the senior Bengal side this season itself. However his engagements with the Under-19 side in the series against England prevented him from earning his maiden Ranji Trophy cap. However, he has no regrets. “I will get it when the opportunity comes,” is his shy reply. He believes that the coaching stint at Australia will benefit him tremendously. “As an opener I will have the chance to play pace bowlers. Here one only gets the chance to play spinners on slow turners. So my confidence against fast bowlers will definitely increase.” He also feels that there is not much of a difference in the domestic and international cricket that he hasplayed. “As a batsman my job is to play each ball on its merit. It does not matter whether I am playing at Lord’s or at a local cricket ground in Kolkata.” The bottom line for him however is hard work. “I can only work hard, score as many runs as possible and then leave the rest to God. My aim at the moment, is just that,” he concluded.

Villa eye Rashica

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are to launch a fresh move for Werder Bremen winger Milot Rashica.

Villa eye fresh Rashica move

The Villans were linked with a move for the Kosovo international last summer (Sky Sports), as were RB Leipzig (Bild), but he eventually stayed with his current club.

Now, as per Football Insider, Villa are eyeing another move for the 24-year-old, who is one of a number of names on the club’s transfer shortlist this summer.

Potential

This season has not been the best for £10.8m-valued Rashica. As Werder Bremen remain in danger of relegation from the Bundesliga, the forward has managed just two goals and five assists in the German top flight (Transfermarkt).

However, he was one of Bremen’s few shining lights last term as they finished 16th in the Bundesliga, scoring 11 and providing eight assists, and teammate Theodor Gebre Selassie has previously said he is “one of the best players in the Bundesliga” (Bundesliga.com).

He has also previously been compared to Alexis Sanchez, who has scored 169 goals across an illustrious career. He clearly has plenty of ability, but has stagnated recently with Bremen, so a change of scenery could be exactly what he needs to match his true potential. Therefore, despite his lean 2020/21, Villa are right to maintain their interest in the Kosovan.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Howe update

Crystal Palace and Celtic appear to be battling it out for Eddie Howe’s services.

And a number of Palace supporters have been reacting to an update regarding the club’s pursuit of the former Bournemouth boss.

According to a Palace source, as reported by Football Insider, Eagles chairman Steve Parish is leading the search for a potential successor to Roy Hodgson and feels Howe has a lot to offer.

Talks have been held and Parish wants the 43-year-old to change the mindset of the dressing room and play a more expansive style of football.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche and the available Frank Lampard are also on a three-man Selhurst Park shortlist.

Howe has had second thoughts on a move to Celtic after verbally agreeing to take over in Glasgow and is leading the way in Palace’s search for a new boss alongside Dyche.

Rangers: Lazio interested in Hagi

According to recent reports, interest in Glasgow Rangers midfielder, Ianis Hagi, is intensifying ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report by Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) claims that Lazio are looking to strengthen their attacking options this summer, and that the Serie A side have turned their attention towards Hagi.

So far this season, the £21,000-per-week 22-year-old has impressed over his 28 Scottish Premiership appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side, scoring six goals and providing nine assists, as well as averaging a WhoScored match rating of 6.93 – ranking him as Gers’ 13th-best performer in the Scottish top flight.

And, according to Gazzetta, should Lazio wish to prize the attacking midfielder away from Ibrox this summer, Rangers would demand a fee of around €10 million (£8.6 million).

Transfer Tavern Take

While Hagi’s return of goals and assists has been impressive for Rangers so far this season, it will certainly be interesting to see how Gerrard’s side react should an offer of £8.6 million arrive for the Romania international, as this figure is substantially above both the player’s current Transfermarkt market value of £5.4 million, as well as the £3.15 million fee Gers paid for the midfielder last summer.

However, for now, this is all a theoretical discussion, as both Rangers’ and Hagi’s focus will undoubtedly be on seeing out their Premiership campaign with an unbeaten record.
