Wolves: Report confirms interest in Ronan

Wolves midfielder Connor Ronan is attracting interest from multiple clubs according to a report from the Scottish Daily Express.

The lowdown: Loan sensation

With Ruben Neves looking more and more likely to leave the Black Country this summer, it looks like Ronan may not be too far behind.

Signed from Rochdale in 2014, he came through the youth ranks at Molineux before making a senior debut in 2016 against Nottingham Forest.

The 24-year-old has made 13 appearances for the Wanderers’ first-team altogether but has spent a majority of his professional career out on loan with spells at Walsall, Portsmouth, Dunajska Streda, Grasshoppers and Blackpool.

Having been sent to St Mirren for the duration of the 2021/22 campaign, Ronan is now attracting interest for a permanent move…

The latest: Permanent deal?

As per the Scottish Daily Express, St Mirren, Aberdeen and St Pauli are all keen on landing the Republic of Ireland youth international.

It’s claimed that the German Bundesliga.2 side have ‘registered an interest’ in Ronan ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report does however state that the man described as being ‘valuable’ by ex-teammate George Dobson is ‘keen’ to return to Wolves and break into Bruno Lage’s plans.

The verdict: Cash in

Under contract at Molineux until 2024 having signed a new deal in September 2020, Ronan would be well within his rights to fight for a place in the first team next season.

However, despite a stellar campaign on loan this term containing eight goals and five assists in 29 appearances across all competitions, at 24 and without a single Premier League minute under his belt, a move permanent move would perhaps be the best bet for all parties.

Even with the possible departure of Neves widely speculated, Lage would surely look to replace the Portuguese star in the market as opposed to from within and the 14-cap Under 21 international should seriously consider the reported suitors.

In other news, Wolves are reportedly eyeing up a move for an exciting player. Find out who it is here.

Man United: Rangnick dealt transfer blow

Manchester United haven’t been making progress during the January transfer window, with many players linked to the club but nothing materialising as of yet, and now it has been revealed there could be a big reason behind it that will be another blow to Ralf Rangnick’s short tenure in charge at Old Trafford.

What’s the word?

According to The Mirror, there may be an interesting reason why Man United have not been adding players to their side this January so far that has evidently left Rangnick concerned over his influence at the club.

The report suggests that the interim manager is frustrated with the fact the club seems reluctant to back him in the transfer window by making funds available to make official bids for players during the winter transfer window, with the manager reportedly desperate to sign Amadou Haidara from RB Leipzig who he has allegedly secured a £33m verbal agreement with.

The Mirror suggests that sources in Germany say he feels he is working with one hand tied behind his back, with Rangnick speaking directly to the media about his lack of influence in the transfer window, during his pre-match press conference last week:

“We had some talks about transfers last week, with John Murtough, Ed and Richard. We spoke about it, but I am not involved in that directly, he said.

Woodward heading for one last disaster

Ed Woodward will step down as chief executive at the club, with Richard Arnold replacing him in a matter of weeks, however, Arnold is not expected to take on transfer decisions, with John Murtough taking over the responsibility of transfers, leaving Rangnick in a consultancy position in the summer, with an unclear role.

Woodward’s lack of support for the German coach in the transfer window could be the final nightmare the chief executive delivers to Manchester United, tainting his legacy further by hindering the new manager’s opportunity to sign players to improve the team.

As a result, it could cost the club a Champions League qualifying position this season, offering another setback in the club’s ability to start winning trophies again.

With the Old Trafford faithful rather restless already, it would bring down the curtain on a rather toxic reign for Woodward in the northwest.

The Red Devils find themselves struggling to tighten up the competition for top four with West Ham, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, failing to win a game in the Premier League so far this year, with fans now desperate to see signings at the club this month to help improve results and ultimately finish with Champions League football next season.

Hussey at the double to power Nottinghamshire

David Hussey hit an unbeaten 22 as Nottinghamshire build a huge lead against Yorkshire

Jon Culley at Headingley04-Aug-2010
ScorecardDavid Hussey once again made the most of facing Yorkshire as Nottinghamshire built a massive advantage•Getty ImagesDavid Hussey clearly loves Yorkshire bowling attacks, particularly on Yorkshire soil. On his last three visits, twice at Headingley and at Scarborough last summer, he has marked the occasion with a hundred and he has added another here. Only this time he embellished the gesture of appreciation by going on to reach 222 not out, the highest individual score for his adoptive county against Yorkshire. Soon there will be border controls detailed to keep him out.His partnership of 184 with Samit Patel for the fourth wicket was also a record for this fixture and the consequence of it all is that Nottinghamshire have a lead of 319, from which they will push for an emphatic victory that only poor weather is likely to deny them, unless Yorkshire can improve considerably on a poor first-innings batting display against a strong attack. Top place in the table will change hands in any event (barring a Yorkshire win), given that Nottinghamshire have eight bonus points to Yorkshire’s two.Hussey’s record Yorkshire in six seasons as an overseas player in England stands at 803 runs at an average of 133.83.Early morning rain had left the outfield soggy and though it had tapered off to drizzle and largely stopped by the scheduled start time, it took the morning session for it to dry out enough for play, even with the benefit of Headingley’s much-improved drainage system.Nottinghamshire’s bowlers had performed a solid job on day one, reacting to the challenge posed by a wicket on which they would also have batted first by maintaining discipline and good lines almost throughout, with Ryan Sidebottom particularly impressive.Sidebottom’s future is in some doubt. His current contract expires this year and, while he says he would like to finish his career with Nottinghamshire, he has yet to commit himself to the offer they have made to him and there has been speculation about a move elsewhere. Sussex are said to be interested, but a return to Yorkshire is unlikely. On the evidence of the second day, however, he might be a useful acquisition. If anything was going to undermine their challenge for the title, it was the lack of experience in their attack and without anyone of Sidebottom’s know-how in the seam department to take the pressure off Adil Rashid they let the game run away from them in the two sessions possible. For all his potential, Ajmal Shahzad had played in only 27 first-class matches going into this one. Steve Patterson, meanwhile, is in only his 25th, Oliver Hannon-Dalby his 14th. Moreover, Shahzad is coming back from injury and as well as struggling for control he seemed to lack some of his zip. They missed Tim Bresnan, who is a canny and consistent performer at this level. It did not help that they made two key blunders in the field, one of them at considerable cost. The dropped catch by Shahzad at fine leg as Patel hooked Hannon-Dalby cost only 20 runs but, as the scorecard shows, missing a run-out chance to see off Hussey on 93 was an expensive error. He should have gone, too. Turning to run a second on a shot to midwicket, he was rightly sent back by Patel and would not have been in his ground as David Wainwright collected Anthony McGrath’s throw in but fumbled the ball as he went to break the stumps.Otherwise, the Australian was imperious. That Wainwright, the left-arm spinner, was so sparsely used on a pitch that had been prepared for spin owed something, certainly, to Hussey hitting him for 18 in one over, including a six and two fours.Anything remotely short was despatched with ruthless efficiency by the Australian, who is pigeon-holed as a one-day specialist according to his international record but has amassed more than 11,000 runs in first-class cricket at an average of more than 54.More than half those runs have been scored for Nottinghamshire, to whom he has been a splendid servant in six seasons as overseas player. Yorkshire are only too aware of how useful he has been to them, having suffered to the tune of more than 750 runs themselves. In this match, having resumed on 35 from 44 balls, he completed his half-century off only nine deliveries more, with his eighth four. His century – the first by him this summer – came off 106 balls with 14 fours and a six, his 150 off 149 deliveries with seven further boundaries. It was steady and unrelenting, just what his side needed as they sought to capitalise on what had been an unexpected chance to bat Yorkshire out of contention.Patel will have cursed his lack of concentration, lack of judgment, perhaps, in failing to complete hundreds in consecutive games. On 96, having played himself in patiently before giving rein to his attacking instincts, he went to carve Rashid through the covers but was betrayed by the bounce and Jacques Rudolph held a very sharp, one-handed catch off the edge at slip. His angry swishes of the bat as he walked off told their own story.Chris Read might feel he should have made a few more also, although Nottinghamshire were clearly set on scoring at a high rate so as to advance the contest ahead of poor weather forecast for Friday. On 42, he played a loose stroke to a wide ball from Shahzad and was caught comfortably by Rashid at backward point.Ali Brown missed out rather more obviously, bowled by Patterson for one, but Paul Franks took full advantage as Yorkshire’s bowling grew ever more weary and deflated, cracking a 62-ball half-century including nine fours and a towering six off Rashid.

Aston Villa: Yves Bissouma a target

Aston Villa are in for Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Yves Bissouma, Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth reports.

The lowdown

Villa have already agreed one January deal, with Philippe Coutinho set to arrive on loan from FC Barcelona.

And now it seems Bissouma, who’s made a century of Premier League appearances for Brighton since his arrival from LOSC Lille in 2018, is on their radar.

The Mali international, valued at £22.5million by Transfermarkt, is currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The latest

‘Aston Villa [are] interested’ in Bissouma, Sheth tweeted, with the midfielder now into the final 18 months of his contract.

However, he did note that Graham Potter ‘expects’ all his players to remain at Brighton this month.

The verdict

Bissouma would be a magnificent signing for Steven Gerrard and Villa. He’s a ball-winning machine, ranking in the 94th percentile among positional peers for tackles per 90 and the 91st for interceptions (via FBRef).

BBC Sport’s Gary Lineker has described him as ‘exceptional’, while former team-mate Eder has described him as a ‘powerful’ presence with ‘huge potential’.

‘Elite clubs’ have been monitoring him – the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid have all been ‘credited with interest’ – and so this would be a real coup.

It’s worth stressing, though, that The Seagulls seem to have no plans to sell.

Deccan revival spurs race for semi-finals

Cricinfo previews the return match between Deccan Chargers and Chennai Super Kings in Nagpur

The Preview by Sidharth Monga 09-Apr-2010 Match facts Deccan v Chennai, Nagpur
Saturday, April 10
Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)If Deccan beat Chennai, four teams will be level on ten points•Indian Premier League Big Picture The rules of the game have changed a bit since Deccan Chargers beat Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday night. Had Deccan rolled over and died in the big chase then, this match wouldn’t be between Deccan and Chennai Super Kings. This rather would have been one part of the tussle between Chennai, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals. Now, though, not only have Deccan thrown their hat in, Bangalore too are not so sure of their progress. Instead of a three-way tussle for the last spot, it has become a five-way epic for the last two slots. This heightened scenario of permutations and combinations will of course stand all but squashed if Chennai beat Deccan in Nagpur, where the latter choked so spectacularly against Rajasthan. If Deccan build some sort of momentum, though, and beat Chennai, more intrigue will follow: Chennai, Bangalore, Deccan and Kolkata will we levelled at 10 points each in that scenario, with the second match of Saturday to break up the tie between Kolkata and Bangalore. It’s all a bit delicate for all the five teams involved, and time for making mistakes is gone. This much is given: both sides will be feeling good after upset victories against Bangalore and Mumbai Indians in their last respective matches.Form guide (most recent first)Chennai Super Kings WWWLL
Deccan Chargers WLLLL Team talkT Suman solved a big headache for Deccan, becoming the first Indian domestic player to make a sizeable contribution for them this season. It might still be a step too far for them to do away with an overseas allrounder, Mitchell Marsh in this case, and bring in Chaminda Vaas to bolster a struggling bowling attack. In tough times, though, tough teams make tough calls.Doug Bollinger’s arrival has given Chennai the x-factor they needed, but Thilan Thushara’s impressive performance ahead of Muttiah Muralitharan will give them a bit of a selectorial headache, especially with Albie Morkel and Justin Kemp returning to fitness. Morkel should take his place ahead of Mike Hussey, which will make it an interesting toss-up between Thushara and Murali. Sudeep Tyagi should retain his place ahead of L Balaji, Manpreet Gony and Joginder Sharma. PreviouslyDeccan 3, Chennai 2
In their first match, in the first week of the tournament, Deccan racked up 190 and defended it with ease in Chennai, to break their head-to-head tie over the last two seasons. In the spotlight Adam Gilchrist has been striking at the rate of 176.81 per 100 balls, but the trouble for Deccan is he has lasted on an average only 13.8 balls per innings. Teams are mindful that one of these days he will play 50 balls, and run away with the match. Chennai will hope Saturday is not one of those days.Something similar could be said of Matthew Hayden, who is yet to follow up his Mongoose-driven demolition of Delhi Daredevils with another match-winning innings. Just as with Gilchrist, his long-time ODI opening partner, Hayden’s next big innings can’t be too far away. We are in for some match if their big days coincide on the Saturday. Prime numbers At 12 wickets, Murali is three short of purple-cap-holder Pragyan Ojha. Gilchrist’s 176.81 is the best strike-rate among those who have scored 200 or more in this IPL.At 89 wickets, Morkel is only one strike behind the most successful bowler in all Twenty20s, Yasir Arafat. The chatter “A 90% improved performance, still 10% left to do.”
“I think the fresh legs in our team after the three changes helped us. It was late when I went to bed, still feeling very elated. The next morning, I couldn’t believe we had won.”

Michael Bates replaces injured Mark Gillespie

Michael Bates, the Auckland seamer, has been named as a replacement for Mark Gillespie in New Zealand’s Twenty20 squad for the tour of South Africa

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Dec-2012Michael Bates, the Auckland seamer, has been named as a replacement for Mark Gillespie in New Zealand’s Twenty20 squad for the tour of South Africa. Gillespie had originally been named as a replacement for Adam Milne, but he has been ruled out because of a side strain.Gillespie had to leave the field on the third day of the Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Central Districts and tests revealed that he had strained an abdominal muscle.”With the injuries to Adam Milne and Mark Gillespie, we have taken the opportunity to add another bowler to the squad in Michael Bates,” national selection manager Kim Littlejohn said. “Michael is a promising bowler who performed well for Auckland last season and his recent experience during the Champions League in South Africa will be useful.”Bates has played three Twenty20 internationals for New Zealand, the last of which was against South Africa in February. He will join the squad in South Africa on Friday. New Zealand will play three Twenty20 internationals in Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth on December 21, 23 and 26.

Asif's five boosts National Bank

A round-up of all the games on the first day of round two of the 2009-10 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Cricinfo staff16-Oct-2009Group AMohammad Asif made his presence felt at the Gaddafi Stadium, taking 5 for 35 to help bowl Water and Power Development Authority out for 133. Asif dismissed Rafatullah Mohmand and Aamer Sajjad in successive deliveries and then kept the lower order under check. Supporting him with 3 for 34 was Mohammad Talha, who picked up the top-scorer Mohammad Yousuf (35). Kamran Akmal held five dismissals behind the stumps. National Bank of Pakistan faced a hurdle when they slipped to 60 for 3, but Umar Amin (43) and Fawad Alam (50 not out of 48 balls) steadied the ship.Khan Research Laboratories ended the first day’s play at the National Stadium in a good position. Led by their bowlers, they bowled out Habib Bank for 222 and then, after an early wicket, finished the day on 56 for 1. It was a pretty poor batting performance from Habib Bank, for whom only the captain Hasan Raza reached 50. Each of the five bowlers used after Mohammad Wasim opted to field made an impression.Pakistan Customs kept a tight leash over Karachi Whites at the Southend Club Cricket Stadium, without ever being ruthless. The day panned out in three phases: first the opening bowler Tahir Mughal quickly had Karachi at 28 for 2 after they chose to field, after which Mohtashim Ali (51), the captain Afsar Nawaz (60)and Faraz Patel propped up the innings, but Customs had the final day by taking three wickets for five runs shortly before stumps. At the at the Lahore City Cricket Assocation Stadium, Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited struggled to make 264 against Lahore Shalimar after being put in. They began poorly, slipping to 8 for 2 against Mohammad Naved, and needed half-centuries from Haris Sohail and Zulqarnain Haider to prop them up. A last-wicket stand of 70 between Zulqarnain and Saeed Ajmal (33) contributed sizably to the final score. Naved, with 3 for 68, and Saad Nasim, with 3 for 53, starred with the ball.Just two wickets went down on day one at the Gaddafi Stadium, where Pakistan International Airlines were carried by Kamran Sajid (92 not out) and Fahad Iqbal (79). The pair added 163 after PIA slipped to 41 for 2 and Sui Southern Gas Corporation, who used eight bowlers, have their work cut out on day two.Group BNaved Ashraf’s unbeaten 166 was the crux of Rawalpindi’s 431 for 7 against Hyderabad at the Diamond Club Ground. Nine bowlers were used on the day but none managed to dislodge Ashraf, a former Pakistan player, as he smashed 20 fours and a pair of sixes in a 163-ball effort. Babar Naeem (46), Fawad Hussain (41) and Yasim Murtaza (41) offered support, and the day ended with Ashraf and Khalid Latif (50 not out off 46 balls) having taken their ninth-wicket partnership to 105.Centuries from Khalid Latif and Ali Asad helped Karachi Blues to 276 for 4 against Abbottabad on day one at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. Their 172-run alliance for the second wicket was crucial after the hosts opted to field, with Latif hitting his second hundred in a row.Multan hit back before stumps at the Iqbal Stadium after they made 237, with their new-ball pair of Abdur Rauf and Rizwan Haider leaving Faisalabad hurting at 23 for 3. It was just the boost they needed after an indifferent batting performance. There were no half-centuries in the innings as Ahmed Hayat sliced Multan from 86 for 1 to 125 for 5 with his medium-pace. The last five wickets managed to add 112 and a top order collapse from Faisalabad left Multan with something to be positive about.Kashif Siddiq led from the front with an unbeaten 121 as Lahore Ravi reached 193 for 4 against Sialkot in Muridke. It was slow going – runs came at 2.32 an over – and Siddiq’s inning could yet prove to be decisive given he revived the innings from 31 for 3 and 60 for 4. Ashraf Ali, who batted 167 balls for 40, also weighed in.Peshawar were well placed in Islamabad despite losing two wickets in quick succession before stumps. They had done the good work by keeping Quetta to 207 after opting to field, with new-ball operators Nauman Habib (4 for 67) and Imran Khan (3 for 47) the most successful. Quetta were never allowed to get going and from the depths of 79 for 6 needed some stubborn resistance from the last four to get them past 200.

Leeds dealt major injury blow

After being forced off the pitch through injury during their 2-2 draw against Brentford, Leeds United have been sweating over the fitness of midfield maestro Kalvin Phillips.

With the England international also missing Leeds’ recent 3-2 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, there has finally been some clarity about Phillips’ injury.

What’s the latest?

According to a recent report from The Athletic, Phillips has undergone surgery to repair the hamstring injury he suffered and is now expected to be out for at least two months, which is news that will surely have a lot of Leeds fans fuming.

With Marcelo Bielsa’s men having the tough task of taking on Manchester City at The Etihad Stadium later tonight in their latest Premier League match, it seems that they will have to take on the reigning league champions without Phillips.

Last season, Leeds lost seven of the nine league games that the England international wasn’t involved in and haven’t managed to win any of the league games that he’s not played in this term, highlighting just how important he is for the team and how much of a major blow it will be to have him out of action for two months.

This season, the 26-year-old has managed to rack up an average of 2.3 tackles per game and 1.2 interceptions per game in the league, which is a clue as to why the Yorkshire side don’t win many games when he’s not playing given how much of a useful defensive player he is from midfield.

This, therefore, doesn’t make Leeds’ chances of picking up too many points in the next two months look very high, especially with the Whites also having the likes of Liam Cooper, Patrick Bamford, Rodrigo, Robin Koch and Pascal Struijk out injured as well.

Their period without Phillips could get off to a bad start tonight when they take on Pep Guardiola’s side who have scored a total of 33 goals and conceded just nine so far this season in the league.

However, with Leeds managing to secure a win at The Etihad last season thanks to a brace of goals from Stuart Dallas, they should be heading into this game with the confidence and belief that they can cause another upset and come away with three points again.

Although, their injuries will undoubtedly make it much more difficult for Leeds.

Now, everyone at the Yorkshire club will have their fingers crossed that Phillips will be able to make a full recovery as soon as possible and end the season fit and firing with Leeds and away from a potential relegation scrap.

At the moment, though, it’s nothing short of a huge blow to see him ruled out for so long.

In other news: Exciting 4-word January transfer claim emerges that will have Leeds fans buzzing – opinion

Man Utd linked to Amadou Haidara

Manchester United’s new manager Ralf Rangnick is tempted to move for RB Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara in the upcoming January transfer window.

What’s the story?

According to SPORTbible (who cite The Mirror), the 63-year-old tactician could sanction a deal for the box-to-box dynamo after previously signing him from Red Bull Salzburg for Leipzig back in January 2019.

Haidara’s current contract with the Bundesliga giants is believed to contain a £33m release clause, meaning a move to Old Trafford over the coming months could be relatively straightforward.

Man Utd can get rocking again

Securing the Mali international’s services during the winter window could get United rocking again, rescuing their stuttering season in the process.

The highly-rated 23-year-old has become a crucial cog in Leipzig’s setup over the last two years, scoring ten goals and providing six assists in 100 appearances for Jesse Marsch’s charges.

However, it’s the holding midfielder’s defensive work that really catches the eye.

As per FBref.com, Haidara has averaged 0.96 tackles won per 90 this term, 6.56 successful pressures and 2.26 blocks, outperforming Scott McTominay in each metric.

After bringing the midfield gem to the Red Bull Arena from sister club Salzburg, Rangnick made no effort to hide his pleasure at Haidara’s arrival, lauding the engine room operator’s quality.

“We’re delighted to have signed Amadou,” he told the club’s official website upon his unveiling (as relayed by Bundesliga.com).

“We’ve been following his progress in Salzburg, as he’s developed into an absolutely exceptional player there. There aren’t many players his age with so much potential. He has all the requirements to follow in Naby Keita’s footsteps.”

With Rangnick’s famous gegenpressing style requiring a set of players with a very specific set of physical and mental attributes, the temptation to bring in a player already familiar with what is required is obvious for the German coach.

United’s lack of a natural defensive midfielder has long been discussed amongst pundits, fans and journalists alike, and Haidara could be the ideal solution.

It remains to be seen whether United’s new boss will be backed with significant sums in order to improve his first-team squad over January, but if he is, then the versatile gem may well be top of his wishlist.

And, in other news…Rangnick can become instant hit at Man Utd by signing “complete” £45m-rated “machine”

Spurs in contact for Kulusevski

As per a report by SportMediaSet, via Sport Witness, an update has come to light on Tottenham Hotspur’s hunt for Sweden international Dejan Kulusevski.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye Kulusevski move…

The Juventus winger, who is being heavily linked with a move away from Turin, is reportedly at the centre of interest from Tottenham and manager Antonio Conte.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is believed that both Conte and managing director Fabio Paratici are admirers of Kulusevski with the Italian duo sharing the same ‘esteem’ for his talent whilst believing he is a ‘gem’ (TUTTOmercatoWEB).

The 21-year-old has barely started this season under Massimiliano Allegri, making the vast majority of his appearances off the bench (WhoScored), leading to reports he could make a Juventus exit.

The Latest: Spurs in contact…

As per SMS, via Sport Witness, Spurs have made contact with Kulusevski’s representative, Alessandro Lucci, as the Lilywhites seek a loan deal – with Juve not completely ruling it out but preferring a permanent transfer.

They rate the attacker at around €35 million (£29.9m) but as Tottenham and north London rivals Arsenal seek a January loan, they are open to that possibility.

As Spurs talk to the player’s agent and his club, it appears Paratici is aiming to land him on a temporary transfer.

The Verdict: Ideal…

If Tottenham can secure him on a temporary transfer, the move would be a low risk, low fee one and could hand Conte a versatile attacking option.

Ex-Sweden striker Marcus Allback hailed Kulusevski as ‘explosive’ and he isn’t the starlet’s only admirer – with Portuguese footballing veteran Bruno Alves and ex-Parma teammate Bruno Alves calling him ‘incredible’.

Tottenham recently announced an £80.2 million pre-tax loss, taking their overall club debt to £706m (The Guardian), leaving little wonder Paratici is scouring for the cheapest deals possible.

If the Lilywhites can agree a loan deal, Conte would be set for a boost at little cost to the club.
